About
Designed by Sir Charles Barry, architect of the Houses of Parliament, this is considered to be one of the finest Victorian homes still in existence, which houses fine furniture and works of art. Today, the Castle is the home of the 8th Earl and Countess of Carnarvon and is known around the world as the real home of 'Downton Abbey'.

- jogomTexas376 contributionsAwesome and AmazingHighclere Castle exceeded my expectations in every way. It’s a gorgeous estate with beautiful gardens and the interior of the house looks like you walked directly into Downton Abbey. The beautiful picnic box tea was a treat too. The Egyptian connection between the owners of the home/Carnavon family and King Tut was interesting to learn about as well. Tip: pick one of the early entry times - way less people and easier to park.Visited April 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 23 April 2023
- veigapaulaLisbon, Portugal241 contributionsA must for all interested in the house and the Canarvon historyThe real thing is different from the fantasy ideas given by the TV and movie screens. Everything is superbly well taken care of, and the house is magnificent. A note about the volunteers, which are excellent in their dedication, and knowledge about the house and family. Did enjoy the visit very much. Only saw the house as walking in the gardens is out of the question for me, coming from a sunny country and knowing it was going to rain anytime. It did, when we got into the car on our way from the grounds. Being an Egyptologist, the visit to the underground section was a plus.Visited April 2023Written 26 April 2023
- aleeebeeeFleet, United Kingdom162 contributionsGreat visitSo thrilled to finally visit the castle. Beautiful building, amazing interior and stunning grounds. The staff were superb and organised a wheelchair at short notice due to a foot injury. We had a cream tea in the garden café which was lovely.Visited May 2023Written 2 May 2023
- Citizen P1 contributionSomewhat DisappointingThe bus tour and guide were very good - interesting stories and sights, particularly the old farm. Highclere Castle was incredibly majestic from the outside; the inside tour was less than impressive. Having toured Hearst Castle and the Biltmore Mansion probably set a standard that Highclere simply could not match.Visited May 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 14 May 2023
- JudyAustralia6 contributionsLoved the personal welcome and many stories at Highclere!Loved our visit to Highclere Castle. Particularly enjoyed being greeted personally by the Countess of Carnarvon and hearing her family story and the background research of her book. A smart savvy business, now connected to the filming of Downton Abbey…let’s face it, that’s why I chose to go there! I loved every minute!Visited May 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 25 May 2023
- janRunaway Bay, Australia14 contributionsLoved this visit so muchWhat a lovely peaceful glorious place to visit. Highclere itself is well known for the television show Downton Abbey but the true history of the property is well worth learning. The tour through the home was just lovely. So many amazing pieces of furniture, tapestries and artworks. The journey through took you on an authentic trip through its history and the characters it had hosted over the years. To top it off, the garden was spectacular. Well maintained and warming the gently rolling slopes of the garden are just breathtaking. Loved every minute of this visit.Visited May 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 30 May 2023
- Bnizzle76Indianapolis, Indiana285 contributionsHeavenly HighclereWe took the train from Paddington to Newberry 50mins, and then a taxi to Highclere Castle 15mins (we were told it was a Bank Holiday- fare 31£). I was concerned about getting a taxi back, but the lady in the ticket booth called a taxi for us- fare 37£. Thankfully, each taxi accepted a credit card. Once we recovered from $85 in taxi fares, (admission only cost $66), we did thoroughly enjoy the castle. The morning was not crowded and we walked right in even though our tickets were for the afternoon session. We also enjoyed the King Tut Exhibit. It’s disappointing that you can’t take any photos inside, but the grounds are lovely. The docents are extremely knowledgeable and give background information in each room. It was a beautiful 63* sunny day, and we ate lunch (sandwiches, brats, desserts) on the grounds. We are big Downton Abbey fans so other than the taxi fare, it was a fantastic experience for us!Visited May 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 31 May 2023
- Stephen DBoston, Massachusetts111 contributionsSuperbly doneStunning architecture & a superbly done house tour. I was anticipating (dreading) a Downtown Abbey theme park, but the house was respectful of its traditions. Docents were charming and well-informed, both about the house and the filiming of the series. The Egyptian exhibit was fascinating. And it is just a glorious building-- it takes your breath away as you drive up.Visited May 2023Written 18 June 2023
- Janice GTelluride, Colorado30 contributionsA great dayI truly loved the experience. The only criticism which is small is the guide in the beginning told us the tea has a lot of cakes! I was excited about it after his comment. I thought they did an ok job with how many people they feed ( I’ve owned a restaurant and have knowledge). But the food was a 6 out of 10. Instead of interesting pastries they had a lot of sweets in cups which were ok. Staff was well informed and I highly recommend the whole experience.Visited June 2023Written 20 June 2023
- Maggie GSarasota, Florida3 contributionsAbsolutely stunning! This is my favorite castle/park of our vacation. The property is magnificent. We walked the gardens and the wildflower fields after taking tea. The tea was perfectly fine. The food was good and plentiful although it was nothing fancy. I guess if one were expecting to dine as in Downton, it would be disappointing. The tour guide was very knowledgeable and very much let us learn the history of the home and family plus tidbits of the filming. It was a most enjoyable day.Visited June 2023Written 3 July 2023

You will love your day visiting highclere if you are a fan of the show. My favorite was the main parlor sitting room. I felt like Lady Mary might come down those stairs at any moment!

The castle is very nice and what you would expect from any stately home that is open to the public with lots of family portraits, old furniture and beautiful decor. The highlight of our visit had to be the Egyptian exhibition, it was very well presented and very interesting. The gardens and grounds are nice to explore too, lots of old trees and plenty of places to sit. Good car parking and you can take a picnic or eat in one of several cafes at the castle.

We have been wanting to see the Egyptian exhibition for some months; and we managed to pre-book tickets online for the exhibition, castle and grounds at a reasonable price of £20 each. The route is clearly signposted from the A34 so no need for 'sat-nav'. It was amazing seeing the house (especially if you are a Downton Abbey fan); if you arrive on opening at 10.30 go straight to the Egyptian exhibition as this takes a good hour to go round, meanwhile the house is very busy, and the house can take 1-11/2 hrs. Have a walk through the grounds and follies. There are also pre bookable afternoon tickets as well. If you are not able to pre book online there are a number of 'gate' tickets, subject to availability. Tearooms and food are good, but not a wide variety on the menus. really enjoyed our day.

Even without the connection to "Downton Abbey", this place is well worth a visit, But pre-book and well ahead of when you want to go. There are many rooms open to be visited and all have a real 'untouched' feel with no modern changes to spoil an excellent feeling of bygone ages. The gardens and surrounding countryside are worth the walk around. Staff are very helpful and knowledgeable and you can take your time to absorb all that you see.

Highclere Castle is set on 50 acres of beautiful English country landscape. Amazing to walk through the grounds to the Follies, stroll through the pretty manicured gardens, skip in the wild meadows and saunter inside castle itself. The only disappointment is that you're not allowed to take photos within the castle itself. Extensive shop but notably lacking Downton Abbey paraphernalia and focuses instead on Highclere Castle products. Tearooms are lovely.

Highclere Castle is a lovely day out - but one you'll have to book well in advance due to the prominence it receives as being the backdrop to the Downton Abbey TV series.
For those of us who are not goggle-boxers, Highclere still has much to admire, from the beautifully laid out gardens (complete with several lovely follies), the Egyptian exhibition and the stunning house itself - still home to the family and feeling very much "lived-in".
The real joy though is the constant good humour and knowledge of the team who look after the public. Unfailingly pleasant and smiling, they made our day.

I have been wanting to visit Highclere Castle for a number of years to see the Egyption collection, the best there is in Europe outside of the British Museum. Because of the popularity of "Downton Abbey" having been filmed there, it has taken me four years to get a ticket to visit. It was worth the wait. No photos can be taken inside the castle, but it is truly marvelous. Highclere Castle is the seat of the Earl of Carnarvon and currently home to the 8th. The 5th Earl was with Carter when they discovered the tomb of Tutankamun. The exhibition of his Egypt artefacts in the cellar is one of the main attractions. The added bonus of looking around this beautiful architectural heaven (Robey also designed the Houses of Parliament) and walking around Capability Brown's wonderful Victorian landscape with huge cedars and exquisite follies was an added bonus. The gardens are stunning. I hear group tickets are sold out until the end of 2016, so book individual tickets direct from their website ASAP. If you find yourself without, it is also worth taking the gamble of tickets on the day from around 2.30pm. The 5th Earl of Carnarvon is buried on nearby Beacon Hill. This is not part of the estate so you can drive here if all else fails, it has wonderful views of the castle and grounds.
The weather forecast was good, so I planned the whole day here. Note to disabled - no electronic wheelchairs allowed inside but there are some manual ones inside to pre-book.

I am such a Downton Abbey fan and to be able to walk among the grounds and the rooms was the most amazing thing ever. It is so beautiful there and the train ride from London was fun and our cabbie was fascinating. One of the best vacation days ever. Oh and we had high tea too. Now when I watch the TV series I say, "I stood there or I was right there!"

Great day out to Highclere Castle aka 'Downton Abbey'. lovely grounds, beautiful rooms, some which were used in Downton Abbey. Great to have a plenty of clean loos, & afternoon tea in real china cups & saucers. This is a lived in castle & certainly has that feel about it. Well worth a visit, takes you back in time. The Egyption exhibition was very good as well. A good job done by the Earl of Canarvon. thankyou

Peut-on entrer sur le site extérieur du Château Highclere sans entrer dans le château et sans payer. En résumé, est-ce possible de voir le château de l’extérieur sans frais?

Do you have to dress up for-the magic of the movies in September, I’ve been asked to go with a friend but I don’t want to dress up in 1920/30 clothes?

I am purchasing tickets for July 2022- I would like to add the “ picnic box” . However, many reviews stated it had to be eaten in the car park? If we add on the “ picnic box”, are we not allowed to enjoy it at a table?

Hello. I'm looking to book tickets for my Mum and step-dad to visit the castle and walk the grounds, with afternoon tea. I was just wondering if people would recommend spring time or summer being best to see the grounds at their best?
