Make Like Hideo Kojima and Check Out This Dario Argento Classic

hideo kojima opera

I love Dario Argento’s Opera. I regularly vacillate between it and Deep Red as my favorite work of his (Suspiria is in a league of its own). It’s so absurd, so fantastical, so committed to its own zany Giallo logic while remaining grimmer and more grounded than most of Argento’s work in his later career. It’s sensuous and striking, and any chance I get, I look forward to introducing someone new to it. For the first time in 35 years, it looks like certified weirdo (in the best way) Hideo Kojima has decided to check it out.

Per Shudder: A stalker torments an opera star by forcing her to watch her friends being murdered.

Wes Craven’s Scream 4 made an allusion to Opera and I think that’s neat. But, back to Hideo Kojima. He recently purchased a 4k remaster of Argento’s classic. While he didn’t share his thoughts, it’s reasonable to assume to master behind the likes of Death Stranding and Metal Gear Solid liked it enough to purchase it. I love it and I don’t even own it (4k discs are expensive, okay?).

Days later, Hideo Kojima followed his tweet up with another picture of the cover art, this time wondering whether he’d seen the complete version of the film. The replies note the extended Italian cut featuring a toilet death, something I’d never seen before. So, I learned something new, and now I need to track this complete cut of Opera down.

I don’t know which cut Kojima saw, though as a public service, it’s remarkable to see him spotlight something like Opera. If you’re not following him, you really should be. From books to movies, whether classics or recently released ones, he’s always there, eager to share what he’s been enjoying. He’s like the game developer version of Stephen King, just a touch more chaotic. I can’t get enough.

What do you think? Do you follow Hideo Kojima on Twitter? You should be. Do you follow me on Twitter? It’s not as good. Check out Opera this week and be sure to let me know what you think @Chadiscollins.
