"This is important. They are in trouble. It's up to us! To us! Understand? Keep him amused but quiet!"
—Violet telling Dash that only they can save their parents

Violet Parr is one of the two tritagonists (alongside Dash Parr) of The Incredibles franchise. She is a Super who is the only daughter (and eldest child) of Bob and Helen, as well as the older sister of Dash and Jack-Jack. At first, she is shy, gloomy, and nervous. But after receiving a pep talk from her mom at Nomanisan Island, she becomes much more confident.

Personality[]

Throughout the first half of The Incredibles, Violet is symbolically hiding behind her long hair, as a way to hide from the world. She also uses her invisibility as another way to hide from her peers. However, near the end of the movie, Violet gains enough confidence to ask her crush, Tony Rydinger out on a date during Dash's track and field meet.

Violet is shown to possess a curious and experimental nature, willing to explore her abilities once she is able to use her superpowers when needed, without being prohibited by her parents. She also has a sharp and observational sense of humor and is very kind and caring, and despite a strong sibling rivalry, she is strongly protective of little brother Dash. She also cares deeply for Jack-Jack, constantly looking out for him and being amazed by his powers.

In the sequel, Violet retains her new upbeat and confident attitude. She also displays a much broader range of emotions, typical of a girl her age: throwing tantrums, acting awkward and at times sinking into a very sad mood. However, she ultimately develops a sense of maturity and responsibility. She was also the one who bravely suggested she and her brothers needed to take action after their parents and Lucius were in danger.

Physical Appearance[]

Violet is a 14-year-old teenage girl with a slender build, small waistline and long legs. She stands at 160cm (5'3") and weighs 41kg (90lbs). She has a circular head, fair skin, pink lips, rosy cheeks, long, straight, black hair with purple highlights (which covers the right side of her face in the first half of the first film), and bluish-purple eyes. Following the events of the first film, she wears purple and pink headbands to keep her hair back. Her supersuit consists of a red unitard with black bottoms and an "I" insignia on the chest, along with an orange belt, black gloves, thigh-high black heeled boots, and a black eye mask. She also wears an orange headband with her red supersuit.

Biography[]

Before the Incredibles[]

Violet Parr was the first child of Robert and Helen Parr. Her invisibility power was discovered in infancy, with her force field power being discovered an unknown amount of time later.

The Incredibles[]

When Violet is first introduced, she is depicted as gloomy, uncertain and socially withdrawn, preferring to hide behind her long hair. She has a crush on one of her classmates, Tony Rydinger, but is too shy to approach him and turns herself invisible whenever he looks her way so as to avoid attention.

During a family dinner, Helen, a.k.a. Elastigirl, asks Violet how school was, noting that she has barely touched her food, but then Dash teases her about her crush on Tony, which insults Violet. This erupts into a fight, in which Dash runs around the table, hitting Violet, and she retaliates by generating her force field that Dash crashes into. The fight is broken up when a family friend, Lucius Best, a.k.a. Frozone, rings the doorbell. After Bob, a.k.a. Mr. Incredible, returns from his night with Lucius, Violet, and Dash hear their parents arguing loudly and eavesdrop. When Bob senses that Dash is in the same room he and Helen are in, he calls for them to come out, and Violet also appears, having turned invisible to listen to their argument without being noticed. Bob then assures the children that he and Helen work as a team, no matter what. Helen apologizes to the children for waking them up before ushering them back to bed. In one of the montages following Bob's return from Nomanisan Island, Violet is seen listening to music and reading a magazine when he comes up to her and gives her a kiss.

Helen places Violet in charge while she looks for her husband, but Violet notices supersuits in her mother's bag and asks her about them. Dash quickly grabs supersuits for himself and Violet. While examining her suit, Violet discovers that it can turn invisible along with her, rendering her totally unseen, without disrupting her force fields. However, Dash runs off after his mother, prompting Violet to go after him, and they end up stowing away on a plane their mother has borrowed from a friend.

When Elastigirl discovers her children aboard the jet, they argue over whose fault it is, and she is shocked that they have left Jack-Jack alone in their house, to which Violet replies that she got someone to take care of the baby. Just then, missiles, sent by Syndrome, close in on the plane, and Elastigirl orders Violet to put a force field around them for protection. However, Violet is reluctant to try to generate such a large force field and is not confident enough to do so. Elastigirl is forced to use her powers to turn herself into a ball around her children, shielding them just as the missiles destroy the aircraft. She grabs them when she sees them falling with her, then turns her body into a parachute to gently land in the water.

Elastigirl morphs into a boat with Dash as a rear propeller while Violet is the sole passenger, as they follow the missiles' contrails. Arriving at Nomanisan Island, they make their camp out in a cave. Elastigirl instructs her children to use their powers should anything goes wrong, but when Violet tries to protest, Helen warns her children that the bad guys they will kill them if they have the chance. She places Violet in charge again in her absence, promising to return by morning. Before Elastigirl leaves, Violet calls for her and apologizes to her for what happened on the plane (and failing to live up to expectations), to which Elastigirl apologizes back to Violet, stating that she herself wasn't being fair to suddenly ask so much of Violet. Elastigirl reassures Violet by saying that the latter has more power than she herself realizes, but also warns her that in their situation, doubt is a luxury they can no longer afford.

Violet's confidence bolstered, she practices her power on the fire in the camp, but Dash, out of boredom, decides to look around. Violet tries to talk him out of it, as he thinks they are on a vacation, warning them that their parents' lives as well as their marriage could be in danger. Nevertheless, Dash explores deep into the cave, but he comes running back as flames are coming in his direction as the cave they are in is actually a rocket exhaust pipe. Dash grabs Violet, and they narrowly escape the flames, just in time to see a rocket taking off into the night sky. They spend the rest of the night in a jungle, huddling together to keep warm.

The next morning, Dash hears a monitor robot (disguised as a wild bird) asking for identification. He wakes up Violet, who stares curiously at the robotic bird that suddenly triggers a deafening alarm. They run away, with the bird flying after them, and soon they are cornered by three Velocipods patrolled by Syndrome's security guards. She reminds Dash of what their mother has said, telling him to run, which he does, and two of the guards chase after him. Turning invisible to hide from the remaining guard and remaining invisible, she attacks him with a large stick. Displaying a high level of ingenuity, the guard uses dirt to find Violet once she has submerged herself in a shallow pond. Just then, Dash returns and stops the soldier from killing Violet, who in return saves him from that soldier by enclosing both herself and Dash in a force field; both discover that she can float inside her force field if generated in mid-air. Dash then proceeds to move the force sphere by running along its inside surface, propelling it at considerable speeds and mowing down everything in their path. After destroying a couple more Velocipods, they run over their parents. After a brief and joyful reunion, the family works as a Super team for the first time as another wave of henchmen finds and attacks them.

During this fight, Violet once again displays her increasing confidence, raising a large shield that protects her family from a hail of automatic weapons fire. Though the guards are quickly overpowered, Syndrome jumps into the scene and immobilizes the family in his zero-point energy. Once the family is imprisoned in his base's containment unit, Violet, while restrained by suspension beams, succeeds in wrapping a force field around herself and severs her magnetic bonds and he rolls towards a nearby control panel. As her father vows to get the family out of the situation no matter what it takes, Violet commends him for making some excellent progress and presses a button on the control panel that frees the family from the suspension beams. The family then makes their way to a hanger in hopes of getting a fast vehicle to head to Metroville. Dash suggests they use a rocket, and Violet suggests that they just need to use the coordinates from the previous launch so they won't have to try to fly it manually. The password is provided by Mirage.

After returning to Metroville, the family is faced with Omnidroid v.10, which attacks the children, but Violet wraps her force field around herself and Dash, protecting them from its claws. The Omnidroid then slams its huge bulk onto Violet's force field, dissipating it and knocking Violet unconscious. Just as the kids are about to be crushed, their father steps in and holds up the robot for Helen to reach for the kids and take them to safety. Bob then finds a remote Syndrome has left behind. Violet and Dash notice that the remote controls the robot. Her involvement in the battle comes after Elastigirl trip-wires the robot when an invisible Violet gets her hand on the remote while dodging the robot's claws. Dash and Violet fight over the remote, which their mother takes control of, and the family waits as the Omnidroid approaches. Violet refuses Elastigirl's order to hide and remains by her side until the Omnidroid is destroyed when Bob launches its detached claw that penetrates through its bulk and rips out its brainpan.

The Parrs return home, where they are caught again by Syndrome, who has baby Jack-Jack in his arms, intending to kidnap him and raise him to be his sidekick. After Jack-Jack is rescued by Elastigirl and Syndrome is killed when his cape gets snagged in the turbine of his manta jet, Violet surrounds her family with a rice field to protect them from the wreckage of Syndrome's jet, though it destroys their house.

Three months later, Violet is courageous enough to talk to her friends, and also Tony, who is now the shy one rather than her, and they plan to go to the movies on Friday. Violet tells Tony that she will buy the popcorn. In this scene, Violet was seen wearing a pink shirt and khaki pants instead of her typical dark blue clothing. In addition, her recent change in personality was made present by a desire to wear her hair out of her face - pulled back by a headband. Violet and her parents cheer for Dash who is participating in track and field and applaud him for finishing in second place. Following Dash's athletic accomplishment, a new supervillain, The Underminer, emerges from underneath the earth. Violet and the rest of the family don their masks and suits, showing their rededication to fighting crime.

Original Concept[]

In a deleted scene (the original opening), she was still an infant and was implied to have a problem with spitting up. Her life was later threatened by Syndrome, at that time an old villain who intended to get revenge on Mr. Incredible. As he froze Bob and Helen, he heard the sound of Violet cooing and crying and him, still holding the Parrs (called Smiths) hostage and frozen. He tried to look for her in her small crib, but it was revealed she had turned invisible and instantly spat upon Syndrome. It was also originally implied that even her own existence violated the law, as Syndrome, upon discovering that Mr. Incredible was not only married to Elastigirl but also had her, he said: "Isn't it against the law for Supers to breed?"

Incredibles 2[]

The sequel picks up right where The Incredibles left off. While battling The Underminer, Violet is told to stay away from the battle with her brothers. Frustrated, she throws her mask on the ground and accidentally reveals her secret identity to Tony Rydinger. This leads to him getting his memory wiped by Rick Dicker, which also erases any recollection that Tony had of Violet. Afterwards, Violet protects civilians from falling rubble by using force field projections. With Violet's father's help, she enters the Underminer's drill and protects her family from an explosion caused by Bob and Helen blowing out the engine. However, they are arrested and released by Dicker. At dinner, Violet brings up what happened earlier and the family argue, with her believing that they should be allowed to fight crime. When Violet's parents leave to visit DevTech, she notices the boots of their supersuits, and becomes suspicious.

After Helen receives a job from Winston Deavor at Devtech to campaign the return of Supers, the Parrs are given a new, extravagant home owned by Winston. Violet eagerly waits to attend her date with Tony at the movies, but the latter doesn't show up, causing her to run to her room and rebuff Bob's attempts to console her. She then spends the night crying and eating ice cream. Violet confronts Tony for neglecting their date, but the latter is confused and asks if he knows her. Shocked and abashed, she runs away. Back home, Violet becomes a saddened and agitated wreck. She eventually finds out that Bob had contacted Dicker to find Tony and wipe his memory of her identity as a Super, incidentally wiping the date he had planned with her. Infuriated, Violet openly denounces her life as a Super and attempts to destroy her suit in the kitchen sink's garbage disposal, which proves futile.

Bob later takes Violet, Dash, and Jack-Jack to a restaurant called The Happy Platter, where Tony works, and is owned by his parents. She laments being driven across town, stating that she prefers drive-in food. When Violet sees Tony, she sprays the water she had just drank out her nose and embarrasses herself, and is even more embarrassed due to Bob's attempts to introduce her to Tony. She then angrily storms off the table, to the confusion of the others.

The next day, Violet finds out that Jack-Jack has powers and that Bob knew about it all along and never told anyone, she got angry at Bob for keeping it a secret from her and Dash and confronted him about it. Bob then angrily snaps at them due to lack of sleep and parenting without any help. He rants about how overwhelmed he is and how hard he tries to help the children. Violet then calls Lucius for help. Bob later drops Jack-Jack off at Edna's, when Bob gets home later that evening, he goes and apologizes to Violet for getting her erased from Tony's memory and confessed that he wanted be a good dad for her and her brothers, believing that he was no help and that Violet hated him. Violet then comforts him and forgives him telling him he's not "good" but "super" Bob then falls asleep and Violet hugs him again. After 17 hours of sleep Bob wakes up in a much better mood. When Violet asks him how he feels after resting for 17 hours he replies "super".

Violet joins Bob and Dash to check out Jack-Jack's powers and is amazed with them. When Bob gets a call that Helen is in trouble, he leaves Violet in charge of Dash and Jack-Jack, but is curious as to what Bob was talking about on the phone. Realising her parents could be in trouble, she decides to resume superhero work and tells Dash to put his supersuit on. While Bob is away, the wannabe Supers attack, under the influence of hypno-goggles that were given by Evelyn Deavor. Luckily, Frozone shows up and helps them fight off the hypnotized Supers. Unfortunately, they manage to get mind-controlling glasses onto Frozone's face and are able to gain control of him. Dash summons Bob's Incredibile and they escape. Violet stops the car, and makes a plan to head towards Winston's superyacht since she heard Bob mention it when on the phone with Evelyn. When all seemed hopeless, Jack-Jack shows off his reality-warping power, giving Violet and Dash hope. They use the car to get them to the Everjust where Mr. Incredible, Frozone and Elastigirl are being kept hostage and hypnotized by Evelyn.

They sneak aboard and try to find their parents. Violet leaves Jack-Jack with Dash, telling him to keep Jack-Jack amused yet quiet. She goes invisible to make her way through the yacht undetected, but is caught by Voyd after she trips over a pot plant. Violet fights off Voyd's efforts to put a pair of hypno-goggles on her, and goes back to Dash, only to find Jack-Jack is not with him. They track down and find Jack-Jack, and find their parents, but they are under Evelyn's control. Jack-Jack manages to dislodge Helen's goggles and frees both Mr. Incredible and Frozone from being mind-controlled. They free the other Supers from Evelyn's control, with Violet using Jack-Jack's laser vision to free Dash from Screech's grasp. The group realizes that the yacht is on a course to crash into the city. They work together and manage to stop the boat before it does any damage while Helen thwarts Evelyn's escape. Violet coordinates a plan to have Mr. Incredible turn the rudder since he destroyed the control panel while hypnotized. The boat is turned away from the city, with significant damage and casualties avoided. Violet's heroism is individually praised by Winston, and Violet strikes an applauding conversation with Voyd, who apologizes for attacking her on the ship. Shortly after, Supers are made legal again.

Violet then reintroduces herself to Tony, with him remembering her from the incident at The Happy Platter, and they agree to go on another movie date. Much to Violet's discontent, they are with her entire family when they go to the movie theater. Violet introduces Tony to her family; her parents and Dash embarrass her in front of Tony. Once they get there, they witness two speeding cars engaged in a shoot-out. Violet leaves Tony at the movies with a promise of coming back after having dealt with the threat.

Powers & Abilities[]

Powers[]

I2 Violet Tells Dash To Mind Jack-Jack

Violet turning her head visible

  • Invisibility: Violet can render herself wholly or partially invisible at will. She does this by turning herself ultraviolet (which is invisible to the human eye). The exact nature of this superpower is not explained, nor are its limits (such as if it extends beyond the visible light spectrum). Violet is not able to render clothing invisible, with the exception of her supersuit created by designer Edna Mode to coordinate with her powers.

Violet blocking an attack

  • Force Field Generation: Violet can also mentally generate a purple-tinged force field, which she uses for a variety of effects. Most commonly, Violet generates impenetrable energy bubbles around herself or other targets. Her shields are incredibly durable, surviving attacks from the Omnidroid v.10, and can be used to deflect heavy oncoming artillery.
    • Force Field Manipulation: Violet is capable of manipulating multiple force fields at the same time. She is able to shape her barriers to better suit the situation such as a dome, wall, sphere, etc. By generating additional force behind her force shields, Violet can turn them into offensive weapons, such as blades or battering rams. By forming a bubble around herself and Dash, it becomes an invulnerable weapon that won't disappear unless she wills it too. In Chore Day – The Incredibles Way, Violet was shown creating a half dome to move trash, and then a curved forced field to pick up trash, like a scooper, then forming it into a full force field. In the sequel, it was shown that she learned how to throw them, which were strong enough to save a civilian by cutting falling debris in half. This is made easier by the fact that her force fields have little to no mass.
    • Force Field Telekinesis: The interiors of her force fields can have an anti-gravitational effect, allowing Violet to levitate the objects or people they are surrounding. This was promptly demonstrated when she saved Dash from gunfire. It should also be noted that Violet was not only able to imprison He-Lectrix but also able to reflect his electrical powers back at him. Violet showed creative use of pulling objects apart with her force fields first demonstrated with a vent in Incredibles 2. She has also been seen using this to clean up trash by scooping it up in a curved force field and then closing it and moving the trash away. As seen in "Chore Day - The Incredibles Way", she can also make small force fields and move them through the air and across the floor and to move small objects out of place.
    • Levitation: If Violet is not touching the ground when she creates a full force bubble, she will levitate within it, possibly due to the Earth's gravity becoming diminished within that confined domain. Whilst levitating, she automatically moves with her force field bubbles. She can reorient her position within it, or even use her own body to propel it forward. This is what gives the force bubble its primary offensive ability, especially when it's combined with Dash's superhuman speed to create the IncrediBall. Objects that she puts in the bubble will also float and become suspended, like the trash in Chore Day – The Incredibles Way.
    • IncrediBall Generation: Created with the aid of Dash to mow down their foes and destroy everything, including enemy tanks. This was shown in the first movie.
  • Enhanced Durability: Similar to Dash, she is more durable than most non-Supers, though her durability is nowhere near that of her parents. This is highlighted by the fact she was knocked unconscious by the Omnidroid v.10, but was back on her feet a few minutes later. It should be noted that there was no visible physical injury to back this up too.

Abilities[]

  • High Intellect: Violet seems to be quite intelligent. For instance, she came up with the idea to fly a rocket, when no one knew how by using the coordinates from the last launch. She also knew how to escape from the electrical bonds that Syndrome kept her and her family imprisoned in, and was quickly able to deactivate their restraints. She also helped formulate a plan to redirect a wayward ship, with no usable controls and stopped it from crashing into a highly-populated area.
  • Athleticism: Although it was not exactly seen in the first movie, in Disney INFINITY, Violet was very acrobatic and nimble, despite her skinny frame. In the sequel, during a quick brawl with a mind-controlled Voyd, Violet was able to keep away from Voyd's portals despite being in close-range. Violet also displayed enough strength to overpower Voyd when grabbed by the throat. She is also a very agile runner, able to effortlessly catch up to the Underminer's drill as it rampaged through the city.

Weaknesses[]

  • Blunt force: While exceedingly sturdy, if very heavy blunt force is applied to Violet's force field, it can be crushed and she can be hurt badly and even fall unconscious. It can also be moved or squashed.
  • Corrosive substances: Liquids such as Reflux's molten acid can corrode the force field.
  • Energy draining: Both her powers can also sap her physical energy if she tries to maintain them under sustained heavy assault (as seen in A Magic Kingdom Adventure).
  • Physical apparel: Violet cannot turn her normal clothes or any item she holds invisible like she can with herself, so she is forced to wear a specially designed supersuit that will disappear completely as she does. This limits the usefulness of her invisibility to a great extent, unless in her supersuit.

Trivia[]

  • It is possible that Violet's powers are based on Marvel Comics' Invisible Woman, a member of the Fantastic Four who could create force fields and turn invisible.
  • Violet may be named after the term "shrinking violet": a person who does not wish to be noticed. She is very shy, and, even at home, stays in the background and does not speak too much. This would fit both her personality and powers. And interestingly, Shrinking Violet is the name of a DC Comics superheroine whose superpower was to literally shrink.
    • Another possibility is that Violet is named after Ultraviolet, a spectrum of light invisible to the human eye which she manipulates to render herself invisible.
  • Violet writes in cursive, as shown in a diary entry.
  • Violet's hair evolves over the course of the film to match her personality and personal growth; first partially obscuring her face in the first half of the first film to match her retreating nature, and then being held back completely by a colorful headband in the second half of the first film onwards, revealing her new self to the world.
  • Violet is arguably the most powerful figure in Disney INFINITY.
  • In a deleted scene (the original opening), Violet was to first appear as an infant who had problems with spitting up. It was originally implied that her existence violated the law, as Supers were forbidden to marry each other and have children.
  • One possible explanation for Violet's inability to make her clothes invisible is her young age (she is still a teenager). If true, this means she eventually could make her clothes (and things she holds) invisible.
  • Violet (and possibly her mom Helen) was originally going to appear in the canceled Princess Academy shorts (due to a piece of concept art showing her with other characters). Had this not occurred, it would have marked the first time Violet and Helen would have appeared in 2D format (not counting that The Incredibles was originally envisioned as a 2D film).
  • Violet is the only one in her family that has primarily blueberry-black hair while her family members have either reddish-brown or blonde hair.
  • Out of all the Incredibles, Violet is the only one who did not destroy a pair of Hypno-goggles.
  • Violet's eyes can sometimes be seen as purple due to certain lightings and the bluish-purple color in her eyes.
