Back in Black is a new biopic about the life and career of Amy Winehouse. The former music superstar died in 2011. Before she died she released one of the best-selling albums in UK history and became a worldwide star. The movie hits theaters this month and we have all the info you need to know about it.

When Does New Amy Winehouse Movie Come Out?

Back to Black hits theaters on May 17, 2024. It originally screened on April 11 in Australia and April 12 in the United Kingdom. Winehouse was born in London, England, and died in Camden TYown, England, explaining its priority in the UK.

This is a theatrical release, so it won’t be available on streaming services for quite some time, although expect it to hit one of the streaming giants sometime this summer. For fans who want to see more about Amy Winehouse while waiting for Back to Black or after seeing it, a critically acclaimed documentary was released in 2015 called Amy. It is available to stream on Max.

Who Is In Amy Winehouse’s Back To Black?

Marisa Abela plays Amy Winehouse in Back to Black. Abela has limited acting credits to her name. She previously starred in the HBO series Industry as Yasmin Kara-Hanani. She was also Teen Talk Barbie in Barbie and had roles in the movies Rogue Agent and She is Love.

There are some bigger names around her in the cast. Jack O’Connell plays Blake Fielder-Civil, Amy’s ex-husband. O’Connell starred in the TV series Skins and the Netflix miniseries Godless. Eddie Marsan plays Amy’s father, Mitch Winehouse. Marson has numerous screen credits, including Mission: Impossible III, Sherlock Homes, and Deadpool 2.

Sam Taylor-Johnson directs the movie. Her previous credits include directing Nowhere Boy, Fifty Shades of Grey, and A Million Little Pieces.

What Is Back To Black About?

Back to Black mostly focuses on Amy Winehouse’s rise to stardom in the music industry. A large portion of the movie focuses on her marriage to Blake Fielder-Civil. He had a large influence on some of Winehouse’s biggest hit songs, but some say he also was a large reason she ended up dying.

The movie also deals with how Amy wanted to control how she was portrayed as a musical artist, and how the studio pressure caused her eventual downfall. Sadly, the movie also shows how Amy accepted rehab for her drug problems and won several Grammy Awards, only to have her still struggle with alcohol dependency and her failed marriage to Blake.
