Last season, Orange Lutheran edged Edison 23-21 on a field goal in the final minute but the Chargers dramatically changed the narrative this tine against the reigning CIF-SS Division 2 champion Lancers. Not surprisingly, Edison’s locker room roared with cheers afterward.

“Us beating them like that, that’s why we’re fired up,” Hogue said. “Like (assistant) Coach (Dave) White, we should have won that game (last season).”

Hogue, a senior running back and safety, scored on a 2-yard run with 5:07 left in the fourth quarter to give the Chargers a 27-13 lead. He set up the score with a diving interception at the Orange Lutheran 39-yard line moments earlier.

He added a 7-yard touchdown run with 1:31 left after an interception and 60-yard return by defensive back Dylan Walters.

Hogue finished with a career-high 138 yards on 16 carries. The Chargers also recorded three interceptions and four sacks, including two by defensive end Jackson Irwin, and didn’t commit a turnover.

“The turnovers were the difference,” Edison coach Jeff Grady said. “I couldn’t be more proud of our guys. They fought their butts off.”

Awad sparked Edison’s 21-point fourth-quarter with a 58-yard TD strike to a streaking Mason York with 7:19 left. The go-ahead score came one play after a 22-yard run by Hogue.

Awad completed 17 of 24 passes for 202 yards..

“Our team is very balanced right now,” Hogue said. “We got a really good run team because of our offensive line. Our o-line, credit everything to them. … And our defense played really well.”

Edison’s defense also received sacks from defensive end Jake Giles and linebacker Logan Gregory and held the Lancers to 64 yards rushing.

“Our defensive line definitely stepped up, same with our secondary,” Irwin said. “The last couple quarters, we definitely put the dagger in them. Definitely shut down the run game.”

Edison (3-0) took its first lead at 13-6 early in the third quarter on a 33-yard TD strike from Awad to Ashton Hurley. The Chargers scored one play after an interception by linebacker Dom Lopez.

Orange Lutheran (2-1) responded with a 73-yard scoring drive capped by a 16-yard TD reception by Longevity Khanrad from TJ Lateef with 3:06 left in the third. The Centennial Corona transfer broke a tackle before racing into the end zone.

Edison’s defense didn’t allow another score.

Orange Lutheran opened a 6-0 lead on a 3-yard TD run by Noah Rodriguez on the first play of the second quarter.

Irvin blocked the extra-point attempt but the Lancers seized the momentum with the 51-yard scoring drive capped by Rodriguez. They scored after Edison recorded a 7-yard punt after deciding not to go for a fourth-and-1 from the Lancers 49.

But the Chargers recovered to tie the score 6-6 going into halftime on a pair of field goals by Nicholas Preston.

Awad was sharp in directing a drive that led to a 31-yard field goal by Preston with 6:33 left in the first half.

Preston, the reigning Sunset League kicker of the year, tied the score at 6 with a 27-yard field goal with 1:02 left in the half.

Hogue sparked the drive with several strong runs and had 84 yards in the first half.

Edison’s defense held in the final minute to preserve the 6-6 deadlock. Irvin had a strong first half with a sack, and forced fumble. The defensive end recorded another sack on the final play of the game.

Lateef, a first-year starting sophomore, completed his first eight passes and finished with 245 yards passing and a team-high 30 yards rushing.

Next week, Orange Lutheran plays host to Damien at Orange Coast College while Edison takes on Palos Verdes at Westminster High School.
