Second album in and a continuation of the first album but Well Below The Valley may have a little more consistency in the selections, and the musicians certainly sound more comfortable with the recording, or recording process, it must been somewhat difficult in getting the vibrant mood of the eclectic acoustic instruments across with this type of music, but the flow and energy is most definitely there, and plentiful too, although the first album, Planxty, is perhaps superior in its freshness and intensity, especially being a debut effort. "Ban of Paidin" is a good run of an Irish piece, sung beautifully in Gaelic, and alongside the traditional arrangements Planxty get in an original composition, Andy Irvine's "Sabra Girl" is heartfelt to the point of bitterness, hence the double meaning of the title, which I think is even mentioned somewhere on the album sleeve, as he tells us that time has cured him, but it actually sounds as if he still has to be healed from his affair with an Israeli girl. "Pat Reilly" is typical Planxty fair. It's the story of an Irish rogue being tricked into joining the Black Horse after a few drams, but Reilly curses his father for his situation toward the end of the song... Also here we get a couple of tracks titled "I Roved Out" and both are very different. Christy Moore's ode is sombre and delicate while Irvine's is a mover. The pair of them are standouts for me on this album but then again this can change from day to day as all the cuts are well crafted and executed perfectly. The Jim Fitzpatrick (he also did a series of album covers for felow Irish act Thin Lizzy during the seventies) cover is an inspired piece in itself and therefore very fitting, excellent stuff from the legends of traditional music fused with rock and dark odes.

Though I prefer the debut and "Cold Blow", this album is basically of the same quality. Exciting traditional Irish folk which manages to avoid being cheesy, which is a testament to the abilities of the musicians and the selection of material.

The best music can take you far away from your own reality. There's many ways this can be done and many places you can travel. With 'The Well Below the Valley' Planxty successfully take you to a time gone by, to places you have never seen can envisage but and to the heart of Celtic culture.

the instrumental pieces on this album are beautiful,''the well below the valley'' is definitely a contender for planxty's best song as indeed is "cunla".

This is a fantastic album for anyone interesting in Irish folk music, or even Irish culture in general. Over all I think I like "The Woman I Loved So Well" a litter more than this one, but the version on here of "As I Roved Out" sung by Andy Irvine is one of my all-time favorite songs
