We enjoyed our stay at the Jupiter this past weekend. The hotel is about a mile from the train station and totally walkable, even in the rain. The room was small, but had everything we needed and the bed was very comfy. We enjoyed our stay and wouldn't hesitate to return for our next visit!

Dear cherylvu, I am glad that you enjoyed the hotel and our beds! I am also very glad to hear that the Portland "sunshine" didn't get you down! We appreciate your patronage and are very glad to hear that you will be coming back as that is the greatest measure of how successful we are as a hotel! In addition to being very close to the train station we are also close to the Bolt Bus station and the Max/Streetcar line from the airport, in case the next time you visit you want to travel in another manner. Sincerely, Zach Miller Assistant General Manager

I started staying at the Jupiter back in 2008 while I was in Portland for business and I've been back many times since.

The rooms, I stayed in a Lobu Queen room, are comfortable and visually engaging, although not entirely quiet. But, people don't seem to typically stay here for R&R. With the Doug Fir a stone's throw away, good food and good live entertainment are a part of the experience you won't want to miss. Check out: http://www.dougfirlounge.com/cal for a list of upcoming events during your stay.

The hotel also offers a bevvy of unique trip packages to turn your stay into something truly memorable. From the "Keep Portland Weird" package, which includes a gift certificate to the World (in)famous Voodoo Doughnut (mmmm bacon maple bars!) to the LexiDog packages for those travelling with their furry best buds, the Jupiter Hotel has something for every one.

As a side note the parking garage can be a little tricky, especially for larger cars. Consider parking on the street.

We had a great time at the Jupiter. The rooms were very comfortable, and well furnished. We called room service and they showed up five minutes later with a pail of beers for a very reasonable price. The atmosphere around the Doug Fir lounge was exciting, and the fire place gave a neat place to meet and socialize. We didn't have any issue with noise, even though there was a band playing and lots of people attending.

The staff went the extra mile when my friend left an envelope with money in the room (by accident!). We were well on our way home when we got a call from the hotel. The manager courriered the envelope to my friend's work, very promptly! Talk about honesty and service!

Very fun place to stay! Will definitely be staying there again!

Dear rwilger, I'm very glad that you enjoyed the property as much as you did. We try very hard to establish the atmosphere here and we certainly try to make available, things to make your stay even better (bucket of chilled beer delivered to your room). I'm glad you got the envelope we sent you, we always make sure and return lost items asap! I hope we see you sooner than later here in Portland! Sincerely, Zach Miller Assistant General Manager

We stayed at the hotel for a wedding. When we got there our reservation for a two bed room was lost & all they had was a one bed room for 4 of us. That was a bummer for sure. Mistakes are made, but the question is, what do they do to fix it. They did everything possible. There was no room to give us then, but they offered to comp our room, get us one at another hotel close by, or after the wedding reception was over at 11pm, clean the room set aside for the wedding reception, & give it to us.
We were pleasently surprised and greatly appreciated their efforts!

On the positive note, the location is away from the homeless milling about downtown and there are buses and trams that could easily take you to commercial pockets (Stark, Hawthorne, Division, Nob etc) where you will find artsy shops and really good neighborhood cafes and restaurants with homey local feel to them. However, the double room is tiny, there are not enough places to hang clothes and towels, the room cleaning is rather haphazard, the front desk staff are not very friendly, the airconditioning is the biggest source of noise (and the "off" switch does not work), and there are no windows you can open to freshen the air in the room. Still, I think it is ok value for the money, so if there is a lodging crunch in Portland I could maybe see myself considering a return. Would not be a place I would easily recommend to friends, though.

Ok so I am already obsessed with Portland in general and after staying at the Jupiter I am now a bit obsessed with this hotel too. The most incredibly fun, clean, comfortable and interesting hotel I have ever stayed at. What could easily be a boring motor inn hotel is instead a hotel experience located in a unique neighbourhood in Portland. I stayed in a 2 queen room looking over the courtyard area and loved it. From the chalk board doors to the creative in room art to the clean and comfortable bedding and decor I have nothing negative to say about my stay here. My only comments would be that they need to have in room full size ironing board and an iron. The Doug Fir is a great chill spot for drinks at night or dinner. Can't wait to go back to the PDX and I would never consider staying any where else!

The Jupiter hotel, appears to be a motel that has been transformed into a hotel, the communal area outside was covered in what looked like large white sails and had nice seating. The rooms are not the largest, there were two queen sized beds in our room, but not much room at the bottom of the beds to get past and the lighting could have been better. On the plus side it was on E. Burnside so driving in either direction (on Burnside) brought you quickly to shops/bars/restaurants and the Saturday Market. Our room faced onto E. Burnside and was a little noisy, ask for a room on the back of the hotel where the streets are less busy.
There was free WiFi and free coffee in the morning, the staff were friendly and polite.

Dear ScottishPaul, Thank you for staying with us, we truly appreciate your business. Renovating a historic motor inn so that room size is up to par with newly built box hotels is hard, but as you found we managed to do it right in the heart of the east side which is full of local restaurants, bars and points of interest. We look forward to having you stay with us again and as a hint, mention the "chill side" for the quietest Jupiter rooms. Sincerely, Zach Miller

We were on a recent trip to Portland and stayed at the hotel for 2 nights. In the title I write that it's not for seniors - i know this b/c I am not a senior - I am in my 30s but can imagine if you are looking for luxury and peace and quiet - this isn't the place. You should also know this isn't on the side of the river as Powell's and the original VooDoo Donuts and Pearl District (if you are unfamiliar with Portland) - but it's super easy walk/drive to get there.

However - it totally worked for us as we weren't in the room much. You need to know that there is a VERY Good Bar/Music Venue attached to the hotel - The Doug Fir. That said - good music = loud music until at least 12 AM or later.

They DO however provide every room with earplugs - which was very considerate. Room is decent size for a small trip and so is the shower.

PROS - your door is painted in chalkboard paint and they give you chalk to doodle (you can also email it to them to post on their blog).

- restaurant for breakfast was good - decent pirced and we went there 2 days in a row (first day I had the granola - B+ and 2nd day I had the eggs benedict with smoked salmon - A-). Staff is super cool.
- gated parking if you make it back in before the crowd arrives for the band
- walking distance from a few good restaurants and breweries.

Cons - when you are tired the room seems smaller than you want it to be
- music is cranking late night
- not totally in the heart of the city - this is not totally a con.

Overall average experience.

I've made the Jupiter my regular lodging for monthly 2-3 day business trips over the past 14-16 months. The rooms are neat, clean and functional--nothing fancy, but the atmosphere and mid-century modern design more than makes up for the lack of frills. The location is great, with easy access downtown, and walking distance to excellent bars and restaurants (Le Pigeon, Beaker & Flask, Biwa, Noble Rot, etc). With so many killer dining options nearby I find the adjacent Doug Fir a non-player for dinner (and the one room service meal I ordered from the Fir was really poor), but great for drinks and breakfast. The "chill" rooms are generally quiet enough, even on nights with shows at Doug Fir, and only once in my many visits did I need to use the earplugs. I've stayed there often enough that I have a couple of favorite rooms and they're usually available upon request. The staff is fantastic--friendly, helpful, problem-solving. The energy of the place compensates for occasional noise or tight parking, even for this 52 yr-old business traveler. At literally half the price of the most basic downtown hotels, the Jupiter is an easy choice for me. The hurdle to 5 stars is that some of the rooms need detail work--the occasional loose faucet, cracked bathroom tiles, wobbly desk lamp, that sort of thing. Nothing major, but annoying sometimes.

Just got home last night after 3 nights at The Jupiter Hotel. If you are looking for an...um.. kinda strange place and you don't mind noise, this might be your bag. The staff were super, super nice.

When we checked in we were reminded that we had booked a room with two beds. Since they didn't have any more rooms with two beds, they decided to give us two rooms for the price of one. Strange, but we thought this would work out because our friend lives in Portland and we thought he could have a staycation while we were there visiting. He stayed the first night and then the front desk called me late on the second night and said they had inadvertently booked another couple in there. Luckily our friend wanted to stay home that night so it was no big deal. Just weird. They kindly adjusted the bill.

Another problem is that the shower in Room 243 ran frigid/ice cold and then scald-your-skin hot every minute or so for the entire shower. I had to hop in and out of the water. It was funny at first and then annoying and dangerous by the third day. They said they couldn't fix it until we left because of the high occupancy.

Noise was a bit of a problem because there is a music venue on-site at the Doug Fir. We paid for a "quiet room" and although we couldn't hear the concert, we were put right over the parking garage. The automated garage doors opened and closed...and opened and closed. They give us ear plugs in the room. Came in handy but not my favorite way to sleep. There was an especially noisy wedding reception going on outside our room one night but they went silent right at 11pm.

There are some very charming touches to the room - bedside condoms, flat-screen tvs, amazing organic shampoos and soaps, good magazines and a chalkboard door that you can draw and write on. And the beds are super comfortable.

The Jupiter is unique and fun, but there were some issues. Skip breakfast in their restaurant and walk up to the Screen Door instead. Lots of other great restaurants in the area.

Dear TravelVal, I am very sorry to hear that you did not fully enjoy your stay with us. It sounds like there was some confusion with your room/booking which I would love to speak with you directly about, but at the least I am glad that you felt like the front desk rectified that situation for you. Our garage does open and close and due to safety reasons does have a small beep to it; I am sorry this disturbed you as we keep it as low as safely possible and don't generally have any issues with sleep interruption. Next time you are in Portland, please contact myself directly and I would be more than happy to make sure that you are in a room located away form any garage noise. Thank you for taking the time to share your experience and I hope to hear from you in the future. Sincerely, Zach Miller Assistant General Manager

Amy, We actually do have bike rentals here at the hotel. They are $6/HR or $35 for the day (which is anything over 6 hours). These can be rented from the front desk anytime prior to sunset. They come with helmets, locks and a map if you so choose. Let us know if you have any other questions
