QS by Subject 2023: Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne gains ground
In the 13th edition of the QS World University Rankings by Subject, Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne continues to progress, reaffirming its position as one of the world's leading institutions in the field of Humanities and Social Sciences. It is ranked among the world's top 20 institutions in Arts and Humanities and comes first in France across eight subjects.
To establish its 2023 rankings by subject, QS has compared nearly 1,600 higher education institutions from all over the world in five broad areas and 54 individual subject areas, based on five key criteria. This year, Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne is ranked across three broad areas and 19 subjects.
Among the global top 20 in four subjects
Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne continues to perform well on a global scale across its two key areas. It is ranked 59th in Social Sciences and Management and keeps rising for the fifth year in a row in Arts and Humanities to reach the 17th spot (+9). Thanks to its progress in Geography and Mathematics, the university is also ranked for the first time in the broad area of Natural Sciences.
Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne is featured in the world's top 50 in eight subject areas and particularly stands out in Classics and Ancient History (15th), Archaeology (16th), Law (18th) and History (20th), bringing to four the number of subjects in which it is among the 20 best higher education institutions in the world. In total, the university maintains its position in seven disciplines and improves its ranking in nine others, thereby breaking into the top 50 in Anthropology and the top 100 in Accounting and Finance.
Top French institution in Arts and Humanities
At the national level, Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne remains in third place in Social Sciences and Management and returns to the top in Arts and Humanities.
Regarding subject areas, Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne strengthens its leading position in France by ranking first across eight disciplines, including six where it retains last year’s top spot (Archaeology, Architecture, Law, Geography, History and Philosophy). The university is back in first place in Development Studies and climbs to the top in Communication and Media Studies, after being ranked for the first time in this field in 2022.
