56% Tomatometer 34 Reviews 60% Audience Score Fewer than 50 Ratings It's the late 1950s in flashy and turbulent Miami Beach, and the Miramar Playa Hotel is the place to be and be seen. As Fidel Castro takes control of Cuba just offshore, wealthy guests crowd the hotel's main room and the Kennedys, anti-Castro forces, the mob and the CIA hold court in the luxurious lobby. At the center of all the action is Ike Evans, a one-time cabana boy and now visionary owner of the Miramar Playa. But behind Ike's charm and easy-going manner are deeply buried secrets, mysteries even to his second wife, Vera, and his three kids. To finance his dream, Ike went into business years ago with mob boss Ben "The Butcher" Diamond, who doesn't appreciate Ike's desperate attempts to end their partnership. Amid political upheaval in Cuba and darker deals closer to home, Ike is intent on protecting his family, and his dream, even as his world in the Magic City threatens to crumble. Read More Read Less

      Critics Consensus

Ambitious and filled with vivid period details, Magic City is unfortunately plagued by a lagging pace and shortage of quality writing.

Matthew Gilbert Boston Globe "Magic City" is a smart soap, with a gorgeously evoked time period that recalls "Mad Men" and a morally twisted mob theme that recalls "The Sopranos." Oct 31, 2018 Full Review Andy Greenwald Grantland Magic City strives for the clever period panache of Mad Men, but it's really just so much secondhand smoke. Sep 16, 2013 Full Review Linda Stasi New York Post Fewer cliches, fewer breasts, fewer 'ahas' and they might have something great. Rated: 3/4 Mar 30, 2012 Full Review Tom Gliatto People Magazine It makes Mad Men look like a dormitory suite. The story is promising... Check it out. Nov 20, 2018 Full Review Rob Owen Pittsburgh Post-Gazette There is some magic in the look of Starz's Magic City but not as much in the characters and storytelling - at least not at the outset. Mar 30, 2012 Full Review Curt Wagner RedEye Magic City may have its flaws, but magical moments like these will have me sipping its heady blend every Friday. I could watch this on going! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member Such a shame a well-acted, excellently-produced show was canceled. Watching it again after watching the original run and man, Jeffrey Dean Morgan was riveting. A must watch for retro fans of the period. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member Interesting period piece crime drama starring Jeffrey Dean Morgan (Negan from The Walking Dead) as the owner of a luxury Miami hotel during the late 50's.
