I was able to go on a study abroad in Granada, Spain through my Spanish class. The experience was really immersive as I stayed with a host family, and was able to experience a new culture. I felt that I grew a lot as a person to be more aware, confident, and independent from this Granada experience. I also got to go SCUBA diving for an environmental science class, where I assisted in underwater field research. Never did I imagine being able to stand on the ocean floor in high school! Green Team has been one of my favorite things. I joined as a Freshman and served as Green Team club President for 2 years. In this club, I have managed our student-run aquaponic, and hydroponic systems to sell fresh produce to local restaurants. In addition, our Green Team has been able to do volunteer work with elementary school students and the local nature center. I just wish we had better teaching in the math and science department. I think students really struggle in these classes.
My overall experience with the Huntington Beach Union High School District was fairly well. My school I attented part of this union (Fountain Valley High School) was the best high school a person could ask for. It was filled with lots of support, opportunities, and diversity. The best part about my experiences was being able to connect with teachers and peers. Many teachers and peers at Fountain Valley have impacted me in so many positive ways and I am so thankful for the relationships I have formed here. Another good experience is all the support and guidance that is given to you when it's time to apply for college. It was good being able to attend many different meetings and workshops surrounding the topic of college. A change I would like to see in the district would be better food options. Many of the food wasn't nutritious and lacked a lot of good qualities. Overall, I have had mostly good experiences and some bad, but being part of the HBUHSD has truly shaped me into who I am.
Being at Edison the past 4 years has been the highlight of my life, and I am so grateful for having the opportunity that I have had to be at such a great public school. I enjoy the sense of comrodery between teachers, and the friendly atmosphere which they share with the students, as well as the belonging I felt at the school. Being Captain of the soccer team the past two years, and a proud member of Edison's Model United Nations program has allowed me to explore different aspects of the school, and has allowed me to see all of the various opportunities which it provides to us the students on and off of campus.
