A quick note about the music: you get a ton of stuff here - if you thought unreleased tracks or alternate versions of known tracks were a thing artists of the 1960s to the present would accumulate in their archives - think again! Lots of great stuff here: standards, outtakes, alternates...I suppose the only downside to the music from an aesthetic perspective is the presence of Jerry Lewis's...uh...vocals on a few too many tracks (like, more than zero). But, given what this collection represents, it's essential to have these tracks included on the set.
I could go on all day about the music, but just know that this is a collection of late '40s to 1960 - if you're looking for his hits from the '60s or anything more recent, it won't be here (although, in the book that is included with this set, mention is made of a subsequent volume featuring that post-1960 years).
Then there is the book that is included with this very handsome set. Notice I didn't say "booklet", which is what usually accompanies box set collections like this. But no - this is a full-sized, hardcover BOOK featuring an informative biography of Dean's life and career, a partial discography, pictures galore - I spent hours perusing it during my first listening session of this 8CD set.
While I found this on Amazon, it was actually only available as an import from an independent Amazon seller. But I got an excellent price on it, and the item was at my doorstep in record time. I need to go back and try to find the other volume I mentioned above so I can bring Dean completely back to life, if at least only digitally.
P.S. - I just brought up this item on Amazon - WOW! Did I get it for an excellent price, or what? (less than $50!)
This 2006 release made in the UK by (would you believe this!) Demon Music. Dean's spirit should be flipping over. Disc 1, Track 7 has: Vieni Su (Say You Love Me Too) and I swear the demons got into this one. Strange sounds from the right-side track (mono?) as though your hearing background talking and subdued blipping noise through the first 50 seconds. Maybe its just my equipment and head-phones (Sennheiser 650) or my particular disc, who knows.
The rarer tracks might include:
Every Street's A Boulevard
Just For Fun
My One, My Only, My All
Absence Makes The Heart Grow Fonder
Three Wishes
Have A Little Sympathy
Ma Come Bali (Bella Bimba)
This, according to my collection of 1500+ Dino tracks.
Anyway this collection of 40 tracks offers plenty of hits and there sure are worse collection out there. Enjoy!
The novelty records with Jerry Lewis highlight this awesome collection of Dean Martin's early recordings, If you ever get a chance, buy this set, you will not be disappointed, All the songs he sang in the movies with Jerry Lewis are here, plus most of the studio cuts of the same songs...
I havent stopped listening to it!!!
Dino at his finest!!!
