Student ePortfolio

Student ePortfolio

Introduction

With the key objectives of nurturing engaged and reflective learners, ePortfolio has been implemented to offer a platform for students to document, manage and reflect upon their own learning during their study at EdUHK since 2012. Students are required to create ePortfolios to document and reflect on their formal and non-formal learning experiences in General Education, Language Enhancement, Co-curricular and Service Learning Activities and Overseas Exchange Opportunities. Students who are enrolled in teacher education programmes would also use ePortfolios to document and reflect their teaching practices for their Field Experience. Building the ePortfolio provides students with opportunities to consolidate and internalize the knowledge and skills acquired in various learning activities across their University learning journey.

Students are encouraged to refer to the Generic Intended Learning Outcomes (GILOs) to organize, reflect on and consolidate their learning experiences and achievements when they build their ePortfolios. In order to facilitate students’ understanding and application of these learning outcomes, our Centre has been administrating the self-assessment questionnaires of GILOs to help students keep track of their learning progress for writing their reflections in ePortfolios. We also provide a set of rubrics, compile selected examples of learning evidence that are collected from students’ works, including ePortfolios, to demonstrate student GILOs accomplishment.

Rubrics for Generic Intended Learning Outcomes (GILOs)

Students admitted before 2016/17 will continue to build their own ePortfolio using Mahara (https://mahara.eduhk.hk), while starting from 2017/18, LTTC will offer briefing sessions for Year 1 students through CLE1210/1208, ENG1376, and GEFC to demonstrate the use of Sway (https://sway.com) & Google Sites (https://sites.google.com/new). Regardless of the platform adopted, students are required to reflect on their learning and GILOs development. The following two videos provide further guidance on these aspects.

University Enhancement of ePortfolio for Reflective Learning Phase II

The CRAC project “University Enhancement of ePortfolio for Reflective Learning Phase II” aims to sustain and further enhance the development of ePortfolio for reflective learning guided by the Generic Intended Learning Outcomes (GILOs) and the GILO Rubrics.

During the project period, the five Faculties/Offices (i.e. FEHD, FHM, FLASS, GEO, and SPFEO) put concerted efforts to work out a well-designed pathway for students’ attainment in GILOs through ePortfolio in different curriculum components.

Accordingly, a wide range of resources was produced in each Faculty/Office to address the needs of their students. These resources include, but are not limited to, online learning materials, user guides, enhanced course rubrics, and instructional videos, etc.

Faculty of Education and Human Development (FEHD)
FEHD developed ePortfolio resource toolkits that contain resources for students in each course, including ePortfolio introduction videos, instruction manuals, instruction videos, and ePortfolio examples.

Faculty of Humanities (FHM)
FHM developed and provided a wide range of resources to students for constructing their ePortfolios and developing their GILOs skills. These resources include course-specific step guides, ePortfolio templates and samples, instructional videos, and other online self-learning materials for enhancing students’ GILOs.

Faculty of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences (FLASS)
FLASS developed one set of online self-learning materials particularly for improving students’ Critical Thinking Skills (GILO2). The materials consist of key concepts about GILO2 with related literature and introduction videos, and an argument map exercise for students to practice their ability in GILO2.

FLASS also produced video guides for building ePortfolio using Sway and Google Sites. The videos provided step-by-step guidance on ePortfolio content creation, customization, and assignment submission.

General Education Office (GEO)
GEO developed and organized self-learning materials for General Education Foundation Course (GEFC) and General Education University ePortfolio (UePortfolio). These materials include instructional videos, ePortfolio sample scripts, and assessment guidelines.

School Partnership and Field Experience Office (SPFEO)
SPFEO developed ePortfolio materials including user guides and an ePortfolio Repository. The self-access user guides provide step-by-step instructions for students to learn how to set up, edit and submit their ePortfolios. SPFEO also collected outstanding FE ePortfolios from the FE ePortfolio award and used them as subject-based sample materials.

You can set your goals with reference to the individual report on GILOs and state concrete plans on how to improve areas where enhancement is needed. If you are approaching the end of your study in the University, you are advised to include future learning plans, so you can lead to life-long learning. You may also include learning plans for a specific course, such as GILOs you would like to develop, and evaluate if the targets have been met at the end of the course. If you are in Year 1, we recommend you to set learning goals for your 4/5 years of study in the University.

How to do reflective writing with the help of GILO Rubrics?

MY REFLECTION

Write a small paragraph about your reflection on your GILOs.

1. What – Identify strengths and weaknesses

  • Identify my strengths and weaknesses on GILOs (based on the self-assessment GILOs report (individual report) [1] / own experiences)
  • What are the results of my individual report? Describe them.
  • Does the report provide insights for me to understand my generic skills achievements?

2. Why – Explore reasons for my strengths and weaknesses

  • How did I develop the generic skills (in the previous year(s))?
  • What challenges did I encounter and how did I try to solve them?
  • Why am I weak at certain skills?
  • Are there any examples that can illustrate my strengths and weaknesses?
3. How – Find ways for improvement
  • What goals will I set?
  • How can I achieve the goals?

MY LEARNING PLANS

Write learning plans on how to improve your GILOs.

Element

Example

Practical

“read a few pages per day” rather than “read one book per day”

Measurable

“remember 5 new words per day” rather than “learning some new words”

Relevant

“I want to join sport team to improve my social skills” rather than “I want to join sport team to improve my writing skills”

Specific

“I want to be able to identify pros and cons of different arguments” rather than “I want to improve my critical thinking skills”

Sustainable

“I commit to voluntary work for the betterment of others and personal growth” rather than “I participate in voluntary work for getting the scholarship”

[1] Students are invited to conduct a survey on their self-perception of GILOs at the beginning of studies and an individual report showing the results would be provided to students individually.
