You'd be forgiven for thinking you've watched Netflix's The I-Land before.
The latest sci-fi thriller to hit the streaming platform leans heavily on The Matrix, Lost, The Hunger Games and numerous other big titles which have captured the public's imagination.
The narrative is simple: ten people, all without their memories, find themselves on a tropical island – but they're about as far away from a summer jolly as you can get. The central characters are convicted criminals, all on death row, and the I-Land is a simulation designed to see if they can be redeemed and released back into society.
But will it return for a second season?

The I-Land on Netflix season 2 air date: When will it premiere?
The show has been labelled as a limited series, which means there's a strong chance that it won't be returning for a second season.
But if the ratings are astronomical, we wouldn't be surprised if Netflix decides to bring it back for round two anyway.

The I-Land on Netflix season 2 cast: Who's in it?
If The I-Land does return, there will be a predominantly new cast given the vast number of deaths in season one. Remember: if your avatar dies, you're dead in the real world.
Brody (Alex Pettyfer), Hayden (Michelle Veintimilla), Mason (Gilles Geary), Donovan (Anthony Lee Medina) and Moses (Kyle Schmid) were all killed, so we shouldn't see them again – unless there's a big plot twist.
The only main characters who managed to survive were Chase (Natalie Martinez), who was released after her conviction was overturned, Cooper (Ronald Peet), who remains incarcerated and admitted to killing Chase's mother, and KC (Kate Bosworth), who is also still incarcerated.
There's a strong chance that the show could explore a new narrative and forget about the old guard altogether.
The I-Land on Netflix season 2 plot: What will happen?
It's tricky to predict which direction the show will take if it does return for a second season on account of the uncertainty surrounding its future.
The action could follow a brand new group of convicted criminals inside the virtual world, forced to face a raft of new challenges, with a new foe attempting to break them and foil the experiment. But that would feel repetitive.
Given that the water levels have risen to such an extent and the world is now a hollowed out shell of what it previously was due to climate change, could the virtual reality I-Land make way for a physical, real-life island? Could the story follow Chase on the outside, once again faced by a multitude of new obstacles and enemies?

If season two does get the thumbs up, you can expect the trailer to land in the month leading up to the premiere.
