I thought I had seen a comment somewhere about this article, but I couldn't find it -- apologies if this is a repost. This is an article about trains blocking crossings in cities for hours on end, forcing kids to crawl over/under to get to school. The main focus of the article is Hammond, IN.

Looks like this state dinner is going well.
Thankfully, Korean media is obsessing over......crab cake.................instead of sakura flowers.
"Did the WH serve crab cake as a hidden snub to send a message??"
As a Marylander I am highly offended that someone was offended by a crab cake
I am from Virginia now but grew up in Maryland and I heartily concur.
I'm not culturally aware enough to understand
Apparently, one of Korean media found out about some strange definition of 'crab cake' on URBAN DICTIONARY of all places.... and came to some strange conclusion about how WH is sending a message by serving Crab Cake for dinner.
https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Crab%20Cake
And then, they also realized that the former President of SK(who was from opposing party) was served with crab cake on his visit to the US.......and conservative/liberal-leaning medias are fighting over how 'OH THIS TIME IT IS DIFFERENT'.
It's a whole bunch of strange fiasco.
Breaking - Trump has lost his appeal to stop Pence's 1/6 grand jury testimony.
(Trump could appeal to the SC.)

The Justice Department today filed a complaint challenging Tennessee Senate Bill 1 (SB 1), a recently enacted law that denies necessary medical care to youth based solely on who they are. The complaint alleges that SB 1’s ban on providing certain medically necessary care to transgender minors violates the Fourteenth Amendment’s Equal Protection Clause. The department is also asking the court to issue an immediate order to prevent the law from going into effect on July 1, 2023.

Someone can double check my work, but this is apparently the complete guest list for the dinner, and I do not see Pete and Chasten's names. It's a smaller guest list than last time, and I believe the only Cabinet members invited were Austin, Blinken, Haines, Raimondo, Tai, and Thomas-Greenfield. So that is disappointing, but maybe we will still see them at WHCD stuff later in the week.
I am a little sad though as it is fun to see what a beautiful dinner it is. Can't do them all, though.

One of our local TV news stars:

I think I would say "the only Cabinet members who are attending". Not "the only Cabinet members invited."
With Chasten's big book tour coming up (it's exciting and wonderful, but it also feels like one of those big internal projects within a family with young kids that a lot of thought has gone into, as it's a departure from the routine), and the WHCD weekend, they might have thought staying home with their toddler twins was the best course of action. Also perhaps safer in avoiding COVID before the tour. It will be interesting to see how much they do for the WHCD as well.
Guessing Pete will be pretty visible. Not sure how much of this is optional, esp for high-profile leaders before election season
It looks like most of the Cab members there are national security/diplomacy related. And Raimondo and Tai related to business/trade. So that makes sense.
BTW, certainly *not* a model -- and I'm not in ANY way suggesting a comparison -- but I don't think Speaker John Boehner *ever* went to a state dinner at the Obama White House, though I could be wrong -- here's a typical headline from those years: https://www.politico.com/blogs/click/2011/06/boehner-declines-fourth-straight-state-dinner-036445
Conservative judge Michael Luttig, who testified at the January 6 committee, and to whom Pence turned for guidance:
https://www.reuters.com/legal/ex-us-appeals-judge-says-supreme-court-needs-stronger-ethics-code-2023-04-26/
Luttig is an actual conservative, not a radical right winger. Refreshing.
Montana state Rep. Zooey Zephyr has been banned from the House floor for the rest of the session. She'll be allowed to vote remotely but will be unable to participate in debates.

I suspect they really wanted to expel her but after watching what happened with the TN Three, they lacked the nerve.
Anyone worried about the democrats not having a bench, the GOP has your back! They are raising the profile of democratic state reps from Michigan to Tennessee to Montana.
There will be a plethora of young, battle tested and nationally known young legislators for 2028 and beyond.
There already is a deep bench… which is one reason quite a few people have been, well, not entirely happy w Biden. But.yes—in time some of these reps might be national. Although the way things are going, statehouses are where the battle w MAGA is being played out
I was joking about the bench, but not about the GOP making it deeper.
Adam Wren isn't the only one seeing this:
https://twitter.com/CharlotteAlter/status/1651300144749346837?t=1nV7vIVusRVo5RrIwwgShg&s=19
It was a good message Charlotte.
Joe added campaign content from Pete’s platform and speeches in the general and he hasn’t walked away from it. He was listening.
I haven't been following the state dinner news. Has the guest list been released?
Reporters have it, but I haven't seen anyone post a comprehensive list.
The guest list for the state dinner is out, because I keep seeing tweets about various celebrity guests, but I wish someone would post the whole thing.
People this stupid shouldn't be allowed to hold public office, at any level -

"yeah fuck the global south but we good"
Ironically, midwest is one of the places that will be less impact compared to some of the other places….(relatively speaking)
There will be effects even here in the Midwest. We are having far more high heat days which are very hard on livestock, especially dairy cattle. Something he should know since he represents Wisconsin. 🤦🏼♀️
Oh, absolutely.
But, it still has direct access to one if largest body of fresh water….and the impact of drought will be relatively less impactful (Although i doubt midwest can survive or escape from the the human v. Human aspect of climate change )
The damage that will be done by invasive pests and diseases will also be a threat to everyone, especially in the ag states. The conservatives don’t seem to understand that either.
And you are not going to be happy with the decorations for the state dinner. I just saw a photo. 🤦🏼♀️
I'm fairly sure he's doing the bullying thing of being "stupid on purpose" or willfully ignorant, but it's hard to say.

Extended version of the chaotic ending to that interview. 😄
Haha.
I do like the light up glass panels though. Gives the operations center a nice tech vibe.

That's it! Which is nice, because you can hear the audience's reaction in this one. 😊
193k views on YouTube as of now. Generally positive comments but some don't get that Pete was very much in on the joke. He really does have a perfect deadpan.💙💛👏
Boyo has a little acting experience and it shows.
He’s got a very dry sense of humour, it goes over peoples heads because they don’t expect it from a politician. They perceive him as not playing along
Pete can actually be quite funny, it's just that some people can't or won't see it because it doesn't fit the image of him they have in their heads.
Chasten said it best. “Pete is funny. He’s not as funny as me, but he’s funny.”
Seriously, he has great sense of humor.
It was sad that he had to hold back during the primary as it became more heated.
True. But also, some people don’t fully get the idea of theater or acting in the real world (as in, not on stage). There are still some folks on Twitter who think that the Wetzel’s Pretzels manager in that job-hunting skit on Jimmy Kimmel, when Pete was the guest host, really works there [ie, at Wetzel's]. In that case, it’s clear to them that Pete is acting, but they don’t realize she is. SMH. (Per IMDB, btw, the Wetzel’s manager was played by Karina Bonnefil.) Maybe it’s just the level of absurdity for some characters that makes it easier to tell?
Karina was a hoot in that sketch and I told her so on Twitter.

This woman is the lead plaintiff in the Texas abortion ban lawsuit. She wanted to be pregnant, and wanted this child.
Shame on John Cornyn and Ted Cruz, who are on this committee, for failing to show up at the hearing. They're both fucking cowards.
This is a similar story, this time in Oklahoma.

Just in from CNN - Disney is suing DeSantis, accusing him of "retaliation".
I have to agree with Elie Mystal's take here:
https://twitter.com/ElieNYC/status/1651265571051241475
But Disney also has all the burdens of government. If Florida was willing to take that on, it would have been relatively simple to dissolve the existing structure.
I mean, I'm no lawyer but that's blatently what he is doing
Today's the first day of witness testimony in the E. Jean Carroll civil lawsuit against TFG, and of course he can't restrain himself from attempted witness tampering.

Still live when I checked in a moment ago. Transportation feels like an alternate more peaceful universe sometimes. When I completely randomly checked in, a representative was inviting Billy Nolen to visit and describing delicious Mexican food as an enticement, with Nolen smilingly responding.
Here’s another movie I hope to watch that is also premiering at a film festival (Tribeca) starring Billy Porter and Luke Evans:

Sounds great. I’ve been really wanting more queer films that don’t just focus on teens and/or coming out stories. Older, healthy gay characters are much needed.
Agreed! Same here.

Some fun entertainment news:
I know we have some fans of Pedro Pascal and Ethan Hawke here, so I just wanted to share that the trailer for their short film by Pedro Almodóvar just dropped. This will premiere at the Cannes Film Festival next month.

The running time isn't listed on IMDb, but apparently it's under 60 minutes, so hopefully that means it will be available to stream once it's released on May 26.

Aw, darn. So it will be in theaters. I wonder if it'll be paired with another film.
I have a feeling this will be available online as well.
Keeping my fingers crossed, fam. 👀

This is the Bronfman Fellows website -

Tim Miller has an interesting article comparing the campaigns of DeSantis and Elizabeth Warren. He starts with this caveat:
https://plus.thebulwark.com/p/ron-desantis-has-an-elizabeth-warren-problem
I have to admit I enjoy seeing Pete in the normie list.
Nicolle asked David Plouffe either yesterday or Monday about DeSantis' failed campaign, and he pointed out that both of the campaigns they worked on in 2008 (Obama and McCain) were declared over and done more than once, so he feels it's too early to write off DeSantis.
I think I've mentioned it before, but President George H.W. Bush was considered a slam dunk in 1992 because of Desert Storm (92 percent approval ratings).
so the heavy hitters in the Dem Party did not run. Instead, Dems were left with the "seven dwarfs" (commonly referred to that way in the media) who were seen as obvious losers -- and pretty much all the same, too. One of them turned out to be Bill Clinton.Yikes, I mixed up 1988 and 1992 when it came to the actual "seven dwarfs" moniker. Thanks to the correct info from @ Psychological-Play. I think I have seen 92 percent approval for Bush (perhaps it was an outlier), but here's a source showing 88 percent in Bush's heyday. That's still incredibly high -- but it didn't last. https://www.cbsnews.com/news/george-h-w-bush-the-publics-view-of-him-during-his-presidency/
Plus it's not the worst thing in the world to have a Rhodes Scholar as the Dem nominee.
Just noticed that "The Seven Dwarfs" were candidates in the 1988 primary. The 1992 primary had five candidates - Clinton, Tom Harkin, Jerry Brown, Paul Tsongas, and Bob Kerry -
https://www.britannica.com/event/United-States-presidential-election-of-1988
Oh, I was sure I had that right! Thanks for checking, I should have done so. Will fix above.
I think we have Ross Perot to thank for Bill Clinton's win
The head of Bush's post-presidency staff, Jean Becker, said that he hated only two people, and Ross Perot was one of them (the other one, I'm pretty sure, was Saddam Hussein).
If you look at exit polling, Perot not being in the race would have only flipped at most one state
538 did a video on this https://fivethirtyeight.com/videos/the-ross-perot-myth/
I'd agree if he had any actual appeal. And maybe he will get the nomination by default due to lack of other options and donor/party effort. But the only reason he's considered is a mirage. He failed to capitalize on that so it's hard to say he's really in any better position than any other undeclared candidate.
Jonathan Chait wrote the same thing last week:
https://nymag.com/intelligencer/2023/04/ron-desantis-trump-republican-nomination-losing-smart.html
Was not expecting a Gramsci reference.
Both far far too online, too obsessed with owning the other side, and too focused on fighting that they think fighting is the entire point.
And both coronated by the media through a thin, one-dimensional analysis well before campaign season.
