First of all, are you planning on taking the HOHO bus loops?

Also, what do you know about each so far?

And what are you seeking?

One's a neighborhood, maybe 3 or 4 square miles, which is one of the oldest centers of African American urban culture in North America.

The other is an entire borough (which was once a separate city unto itself), about 80 square miles, with about 3 million people and about 25 different neighborhoods.

I think it's probably better if visitors answer this one.

Harlem is a neighborhood that's part of Manhattan while Brooklyn is one of the 5 boroughs of the city of NY. (boroughs are Manhattan, Queens, the Bronx, Staten Island and Brooklyn) Brooklyn is across the East River (erego the need for the bridge ;)

Is Harlem a neighborhood that is one of the oldest centers of African American urban culture in North America - or is this Brooklyn?

Yes. Harlem is a neighborhood, Brooklyn is a borough (aka a county.)

What is a borough:

You can read about them here:

Yes, Harlem is a historically African American neighborhood in Manhattan, just north of Central Park.

Brooklyn is basically its own city. It has really wealthy neighborhoods of old houses, family neighborhoods, two Chinatowns, two Arab neighborhoods, at least two Italian neighborhoods, a Russian neighborhood, "bohemian" neighborhoods full of young hipsters, several black neighborhoods ranging from rich (where The Cosby Show was set) to awful ghetto, beaches, an amusement park, an Army base, a huge old cemetery, several large museums, a park almost the size of Central Park and more ... there's a LOT in Brooklyn.

Definitely devote a day to Brooklyn. Either ditch the HOHO completely or get off and explore on your own once you've done the loop.

Knock yourself out with this from the FAQs sticky

Hey Kanga ..... now that we've confirmed the disturbing truth ..... that you've avatar is of you ..... 'au natural' ..... http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g60763-i5-k1929583-o10-Itinery_Thoughts-New_York_City_New_York.html

Itinery_Thoughts-New_York_City_New_York.html

I guess the next obvious question is then ...... why do you also appear to be naked in the kitchen? Is this some type of twisted 'Foodie' ritualistic sacrificial rite involving viagra, nakeness and food? Well you put a shirt on mister or soon you'll find yourself as Bettina's computer screen wallpaper.

But ..... in the meantime ..... for the purposes of this conversation ..... I'll just draw an imaginary towel around you mate.

Okay ..... Jhwaderer mentions ..... "Yes, Harlem is a historically African American neighborhood in Manhattan, just north of Central Park." Well if you're only heading to Harlem to 'witness' African Americans ..... I hope you know that we've got African Americans in Brooklyn too.

Can I get a witness?!?!?!

Actually, I was wondering if you were comparing these 2 places b/c both have gospel services. Is that what this is about? There are in fact excellent gospel choirs/churches in both Harlem and Brooklyn. If that's what you looking for, I'd say Brooklyn churches tend to have fewer tourists. There's a load of info already on the forum about gospel music if you do a text search.

You know, Kangaroo, you really could try looking at a map; it will give you an idea of where things are and how big they are.

The Borough of Brooklyn, by the way, is more than three times the size of all of the Borough of Manhattan, and has almost a million more residents.
