He was predeceased by : his father John James Ahern, Sr.. He is survived by : his wife Jan (Cheesman); his children, John James, III (Ashley), Mark (Marykate), Anna, Luke, Sara Jane and Mary Grace; his grandchildren, Vivienne, Audrey and Finnian; his mother Marilyn Rita Ahern (Stupek); his siblings, Emily (John), Sara (Leon), Paul (Carmen), Karyn (Neil) and Renee (Matthew); his parents-in-law, Kay and Harold Cheesman; and his siblings-in-law, Barry Cheesman (Julie) and Kelly Leipold (Lance). He is also survived by thirteen nieces and nephews, one great-niece, six Godchildren, two Aunts, three Uncles and 18 cousins.

Visitation was held on Monday, May 13th 2024 from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM at the St. Thomas More Catholic Church (8035 S Quebec St, Englewood, CO 80112). A rosary was held on Monday, May 13th 2024 at 7:30 PM at the same location. A Mass of Christian burial was held on Tuesday, May 14th 2024 at 11:00 AM at the same location. A reception was held on Tuesday, May 14th 2024 at 12:30 PM at the McCallin Hall (8035 S Quebec St, Englewood, CO 80112). A committal service was held on Tuesday, May 14th 2024 at 2:30 PM at the Olinger-Chapel Hill Cemetery (6601 S Colorado Blvd, Centennial, CO 80121).
