The Road House modern adaptation of the 1980s cult classic was a huge success on Prime Video. So, it comes as no surprise that Amazon MGM Studios is planning to continue the story.

Per Variety, Amazon has officially confirmed a Road House sequel is in the works. Lead actor Jake Gyllenhaal is tapped to return as Dalton, the former UFC fighter-turned-bouncer. However, the studio hasn't revealed any other details of the plot of the upcoming installment.

'I Love the Role': Jake Gyllenhaal Addresses Possible Sequel to Road House Remake
Jake Gyllenhaal speaks about the potential of returning as Dalton for a sequel to the new Road House movie.

“As we saw this spring the world went crazy for a little movie called Road House,” Amazon MGM Studio chief Jennifer Salke said on stage at the Pier 36 venue in New York City. “Nearly 8 million viewers globally have watched Road House. We like to watch these results like a baby.”

The new take on Patrick Swayze's cult classic action film was a massive success. Road House has record viewership on the platform, attracting over 50 million viewers within its first two weeks, the biggest the platform has ever had. The Amazon MGM production filmed with IMAX cameras was released on March 21. According to Amazon, the total viewership worldwide amounts to nearly 80 million. It's worth noting the streaming service didn't clarify what counts as a view or how much the consumers had to watch in order to count as part of the audience.

Jake Gyllenhaal's Road House takes inspiration from real-life events, creating a much more nuanced protagonist than the original 1989 film.

The First Road House Wasn't Without Controversy

The action film, which had Jake Gyllenhaal as the lead actor, came from director Doug Lima. It also starred Daniela Melchior, Billy Magnussen, Jessica Williams, Joaquim de Almeida, Conor McGregor, and Lukas Gage, among others. It's unclear if the cast will return or whether the director will be back to direct the sequel, especially given all the bad blood prior to the film's premiere.

Liman was expecting the film to premiere in theaters. However, Amazon MGM Studios decided it should be released exclusively on its platform, Prime Video. Subsequently, the director said he would boycott the film's premiere at South by Southwest Festival. However, lead actor Jake Gyllenhaal clarified the controversy, noting that Amazon told them it was meant for streaming. "Amazon was always clear that it was streaming. I just want as many people to see it as possible," the actor said.

On top of that, R. Lance Hill, who co-wrote the original 1989 film alongside Hilary Henkin, filed a lawsuit against MGM and Amazon Studios for copyright infringement on the remake.

Following the events in the film's ending, McGregor confirmed he would not return as Knox in the sequel. Sharing the news of the sequel on his Instagram Stories, the UFC champion wrote, "Congrats guys, wish you all the best of luck with it," adding two emojis, one of a red heart and one of the prayer hands. He also wrote that in the comments section of Prime Video's announcement on Instagram.

There's no official release date for Road House 2, but the first one is available for streaming on Prime Video.
