It was the hottest day of the year so far as highs ended up around 90 across the area. That’s enough to set record highs for the date at Dulles Airport and in Baltimore. This hot spell is on the early side of average. Washington’s first 90 typically comes along around May 16. Temperatures should remain near record levels tonight, and it’s also going to be toasty Tuesday.

Through Tonight: Skies are rather clear, with the puffy clouds of the day tending to dissipate at night. Lows are mostly in the low and mid-60s. If they hold through the day Tuesday, some record-warm lows for the date are possible.

Tomorrow (Tuesday): A mix of clouds and sun, with probably more clouds than we saw today. Highs are mainly in the upper 80s to around 90. Dulles has the best chance of another record high, with 86 being the mark to reach. In D.C. and Baltimore, the record for the date is 92.

There could be scattered showers and storms in the late afternoon through evening. At the moment, they don’t seem likely to be terribly intense.

Hot! Records were threatened or set at all area weather observation locations today. It’s also the first day at or above 90 for the area this year, the earliest since 2017. The last record high in the city was on Jan. 26, when a reading of 80 set a monthly record for maximum temperature.

Here are the preliminary numbers — we’ll edit as needed when the daily reports come out.

  • Washington: 89 nears 91 from 2017
  • Dulles: 91 beats 89 from 2017
  • Baltimore: 92 beats 91 from 1974
