As any regular viewer would know, K-dramas aren’t limited to the borders of South Korea. If Crash Landing on You treated audiences to the beauty of Switzerland, then 2024’s Queen of Tears has Germany as some of its scenery.
The European locale serves as the honeymoon setting of Kim Soo Hyun’s Baek Hyun-woo and Kim Ji Won’s Hong Hae-in, which they return to amid a rocky marriage. And while the capital of Berlin appears in several scenes, the two also traversed other locations in the German borders–including Frankfurt and Lage. Ahead, take a glimpse at some of these idyllic spots in Germany, as seen on the show.
Queen of Tears: Filming Locations in Germany
1. Neptunbrunnen (The Neptune Fountain)
Basking in wedded bliss, the first few minutes of episode one offered a glimpse of Hyun-woo and Hae-in on their German honeymoon. Among the montage included a romantic moment between the couple in Berlin’s Neptunbrunnen or the Neptune Fountain.
The grand fountain, located in front of Berlin Town Hall, was designed by German sculptor Reinhold Begas, as commissioned by the city for the coronation of Kaiser Wilhelm II in 1888. The bronze sculpture features the Roman god Neptune with four female figures, symbolizing the four main rivers of Prussia at the time.
Address: Rathausstrasse 1, 10178 Berlin Germany
2. Spree River
The two shared a romantic kiss on the banks of the Spree River, which runs through the center of Berlin. With 400 kilometers in length, the body of water flows through Saxony, Brandenburg, and the Berlin states of Germany, just a few distances from the Czech Republic.
Travelers and visitors can enjoy the sights of the German capital with riverboat cruises or bike rentals along the river. Hyun-woo and Hae-in, in particular, strolled along the river beside the Museumsinsel.
Address: Bodestraße 1-3 10178 Berlin
3. Pariser Platz
Nothing is as quintessentially Berlin as the Pariser Platz, one of the German capital’s most famous landmarks. The historic square is located near the Brandenburg Gate, a staple entry in any itinerary. During their honeymoon, Hyun-woo and Hae-in shared a sweet moment in this spot, just beside the Hotel Adlon Kempinski.
Address: Pariser Platz 4. 10117 Berlin
4. Botanischer Duftgarten
Approximately four hours away from Berlin, the couple made their way to the town of Lage, Germany during their honeymoon, where they arrived at the Botanischer Duftgarten. The garden has almost 500,000 plants in their care including the English lavender, which Hyun-woo and Hae-in were able to witness themselves.
Address: Am Duftgarten 1, 32791 Lage
5. Sanssouci Palace
In episode six, Hae-in returns to Germany to the Sanssouci Palace, which is one of the locations she visited with her husband during their honeymoon. Little does she know, Hyun-woo also fled to follow her.
The historical building was built for the Prussian King Frederick the Great as his summer palace from 1745 to 1747, which is akin to a place of relaxation–its name is actually a French phrase that means “without worries.” The entire complex, along with the palaces and park, is a UNESCO World Heritage site for its outstanding architecture and landscaping.
Address: Maulbeerallee 14469 Potsdam
6. Nikolassee Station
In transit, Hyun-woo and Hae-in stop by the Nikolassee station, which is also noteworthy for its Neo-Gothic facade.
Address: Steglitz-Zehlendorf, Berlin
7. Hotel de Rome
The two share a snack away from home, as they eat instant ramen and exchange a poignant conversation on the Rooftop Terrace of Berlin’s Hotel de Rome. The five-star hotel found at the heart of the city overlooks famous sights, with the terrace offering views of the city skyline.
Address: Behrenstraße 37, 10117 Berlin
8. Berlin Cathedral
Hyun-woo offers a prayer to Hae-in in the Berlin Cathedral, one of the city’s most prominent spots. The German Protestant church has roots back in the 15th century, with architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel turning it into a neo-classical building by the early 19th century.
Address: Am Lustgarten 10178 Berlin
9. Eiserner Steg
Hae-in starts to search for her and her husband’s love locks, which, years ago, they had locked on the railings of the Iron Bridge or the Eiserner Steg. While the K-drama poses the location as somewhere near Berlin, in real life, the footbridge is actually located almost five hours away in Frankfurt, Germany.
Address: Eiserner Steg, 60311 Frankfurt am Main
10. Wochenmarkt Winterfeldtplatz
In the same episode, the couple had some downtime and walked along Berlin’s Wochenmarkt Winterfeldtplatz. The location is dubbed as Berlin’s most famous and largest weekly market, with plenty of pubs, cafés, and restaurants around the area that make for a lively nightlife, too.
Address: Winterfeldtplatz 10781 Berlin
11. L’Osteria Potsdam
The two share a meal al fresco at the L’Osteria Potsdam, an Italian restaurant found in the vicinity of the old market. The food hub is famous for its pizza, which comes in sizeable portions.
Address: Otto-Braun-Platz 1, 14467 Potsdam
12. Alter St.-Matthäus-Kirchhof
In episode 14, a flashback scene returns to the couple's honeymoon, where Hyun-woo and Hae-in find themselves on a park's premises. The park in question happens to be a cemetery, particularly the Alter St.-Matthäus-Kirchhof in Berlin, which is known as the interment of the Brothers Grimm, the creators of fairy tales like Cinderella, The Frog Prince, Hansel and Gretel, Rapunzel, Sleeping Beauty, and Little Red Riding Hood.
Address: Großgörschenstraße 12-14, 10829 Berlin
