On campus, students can get involved in about 60 student organizations or play for the Chapman Panthers sports teams. Student athletes can choose from five club sports or join one of the nearly 20 varsity teams, which compete at the NCAA Division III Independent level. Notable alumni include Emmett Ashford, who was the first African-American umpire in Major League Baseball.
