Vote up the best horror musical.

To many, horror musicals may seem like the most ridiculous pairing of genres in the history of film, as the two drastically different genres rarely ever cross paths, and for good reason. Musicals are often considered to be elitist and provocative while horror is grotesque and gruesome, so pairing the two seems like a forbidden nightmare that would never work. However, there have been more than a few occasions where these seemingly inharmonious genres blend together to make the most beautiful music.

Some traditional musicals showcase their high-brow flair with small but poignant twists of horror showcased beautifully in films in The Phantom of the Opera and Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, while cult classics like The Rocky Horror Picture Show and Phantom of the Paradise know exactly how absurd their ideologies are and play into the lunacy and have become some of the biggest hits in both genres in films. Horror musicals even dip their toes into the comedic genre just to get every genre under the sun under their belts, and create unforgettable and hilarious experiences in Cannibal! The Musical and Little Shop of Horrors. Horror musicals may be bizarre, but they beautifully showcase the best both genres have to offer.

A staple in the midnight release catalog of indie movie theaters for nearly 50 years, The Rocky Horror Picture Show is the horror musical to end all horror musicals. Showcasing elements of the horror genre and generating an overall spooky vibe with Tim Curry's Dr. Frank-N-Furter leading the charge, the film was a ridiculously good time that, while not actually being scary, still managed to keep the aura of fright with its wonderfully catchy tunes.

The horror genre always manages to find a way to sneak in meta references into its films, and Stage Fright is the epitome of meta-ness in horror. A horror musical about a killer who hates horror musicals and kills anyone who attempts to perform a song, the film is incredibly unique, and while it may not be the most high-brow film showcased on this list, there are plenty of brutal kills, enjoyable songs, and a killer performance from Meat Loaf that will have horror fans enraptured by what they are witnessing.
