The film was the progenitor of the jiangshi film genre and one of Hong Kong's first kung fu horror comedies. There is one other stand-alone sequel starring Hung and Lam Ching-ying Encounters of the Spooky Kind II which has no relation to Encounters of the Spooky Kind. The Chinese name for the movie literally translates as ghost fights ghost.

Magnificent Butcher was produced as Hung's attempt to duplicate the success of Jackie Chan's 1978 martial arts action comedy film Drunken Master, in which Chan plays Wong Fei-hung. Drunken Master heavily features the Beggar So character, who is also in Magnificent Butcher.

Along with The Prodigal Son, Warriors Two is considered one of the best martial arts film displaying the authentic version of the Wing Chun style. Despite the title, Warriors Two is not a sequel. It was set in the aftermath of the Vietnam War. Although set in Vietnam, the most of the film was shot in the Philippines. The scenes set in the United States were actually filmed in Canada. The ensembles of convict soldiers in the film are reminiscent of similar squads in American action war films like The Dirty Dozen. Hung believed his normal size and body shape, whilst suited to his comedic characters in his other films, would be inappropriate for a soldier. In order to get into shape for the lead role, Hung lost 30 pounds in 3 months, by surviving on a diet of nothing but chicken and rice.

Although he had only a very small role in The Victim, former Peking Opera School student Yuen Biao played a key part in the making of this film. He was one of four action choreographers on the film, and doubled several of the stars for martial arts and acrobatics. Karl Maka, a frequent co-star with Sammo Hung in such films as Skinny Tiger, Fatty Dragon and Odd Couple, has an unusual deadpan role as a Shaolin abbot. Bryan Leung is an action actor who is well known for his intense style, but even he found this film a challenge. He has recalled many times of the exhaustion he felt in filming the final fight scene, much of which he was not doubled for.

In fact, Chan and only appears in a supporting role, with Tony Leung Ka-Fai as the central character. After appearing with Chan in Killer Meteors in 1976, the film's producer and co-star, Jimmy Wang Yu, came to Chan's aid when the then young actor sought his help in settling a dispute with veteran director, Lo Wei. Chan repaid the favour by playing roles in Wang's films, which included this film as well as the 1982 film Fantasy Mission Force.
