Natural beauty and world-class attractions make the city of Indio a stand-out in the Coachella Valley. Sprouting out of necessity as a railroad town, Indio has enjoyed a history as an agricultural powerhouse and is currently a hub for artists, performers and, of course, festivals, earning it the nickname the "City of Festivals."
Colorful artwork is displayed throughout Indio, from colorful murals to giant art installations downtown. Homes in Indio flaunt large, immaculate lawns flocked with flourishing fan palm trees and well-tended gardens. Residents enjoy expansive ranch and Mission-inspired house styles, as well as Spanish-style homes. Some larger lakefront homes enjoy amazing views of the Santa Rosa Mountains and the Terra Lago lakes from multilevel terraces. “The thing about Indio is it’s very affordable compared to the surrounding areas like La Quinta or Home Desert, and especially Palm Springs. That’s the most expensive place in the Valley,” says John Sloan, Realtor with Keller Williams Luxury Homes. Price tags in Indio typically range from the $400,000s to the $700,000s, with some select lakefront estates reaching the $900,000s and even heading in the millions.
The city is served by Desert Sands and Coachella Valley Unified School Districts, educating a combined 40,000 students. Students can attend Harry S. Truman Elementary School and Colonel Mitchell Paige Middle School to prepare for studies at Indio High School. With notable graduates the likes of actor Marco Sanchez and actress Vanessa Marcil, Indio High holds an overall Niche grade of B-minus. Truman has an A-minus, and Paige has a B.
City parks help residents connect with nature and come together as a community. Take a furry friend for a walk at Mulligan Dog Park or any other pet-friendly park in Indio. Head to Miles Avenue Park and kick a ball around their athletic fields, grab a tennis match or enjoy the lush greenery from one of the picnic shelters while the kids enjoy the playgrounds. Residents also enjoy the Indio Community Center's athletic facilities and multipurpose event and meeting rooms.
Groceries and other essentials can be found at local meat markets like Valley Meat Market, southwest chains like Cardenas Markets and other big-name retailers like Walmart and Costco. Indio Grand Marketplace offers a variety of retail vendors like the Revivals Thrift Store. While shopping, stop by El Mexicali and sample authentic Mexican fare made from scratch. Sushi Kitto is another local favorite, featuring a menu of Japanese fusion dishes with a side of live entertainment. The outdoor ambiance at Tack Room Tavern is also a huge draw for patrons.
Indio currently hosts the Coachella Arts and Music Festival, one of the largest music festivals in the nation. Lasting several days and featuring world-class performers like Childish Gambino, Ariana Grande and Beyoncé, Coachella draws over 100,000 people each year. “Another great thing about Indio is the city allows for Airbnbs,” says Sloan, a 26-year resident of Palm Desert. “That is definitely a huge draw given all the attendees the city has for its festivals, especially the Coachella Festival.” Indio also hosts the Riverside County Fair & National Date Festival, which features live music and cuisine from around the world. Residents and visitors can also learn more about the area's history at the Coachella Valley History Museum, which hosts the annual Día De Los Muertos Celebration.
Many residents live close to Indio's commercial thoroughfares, including Interstate 10 and Highways 86 and 111, all running directly through the city. Along with the SunLine Transit Agency providing convenient bus routes, residents have easy access to the rest of the Coachella Valley.
With resorts, country clubs and golf courses in and surrounding Indio, residents have options when it’s time for recreation or relaxation. The Golf Club at Terra Lago has a combined 36 holes between its North and South Courses that offer eye-catching lake and mountain views across the Coachella Valley. The 1,000-acre Empire Polo Club offers several venues to enjoy views, including the Rose Garden, Empire Grand Oasis and Medjhool Lake.
