The book intersperses sections on the lives of the astronauts and others with updates on the progress of the flight of Apollo 11. Since only a single flight is covered, rather than the entire moon program, it goes into far more detail than is usual in Apollo books. And it covers the thoughts and activities of the crew's wives and families, pad personnel, medical staff and many others who are usually overlooked or only mentioned in passing. The result is a much richer experience, and you really feel that you're travelling with both the crew and all the others involved - experiencing the whole summation of the flight.
There is also an interesting epilogue, where Arthur C Clarke discusses man's future in space. Some of his predictions have turned out to be wildly optimistic - a flight to Mars in the 1980s, first moonbases in the 1970s - but others are spot on and overall it's a nice coda to the main book.
