Fun fact: Friedrich, Duke of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg was the older brother of King Christian IX of Denmark. King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden is his great great-grandson.

Any nobility or ex noble here? How far you guys can trace your lineage?

u/protespojken avatar

to the 13th century

u/Delicious-Air-4837 avatar

U guys still got your wealth or just name?

u/protespojken avatar

No fortune, just good and stable. My grandfather and great grandfather were forced to sell their two castles between the 1930-1960s. Money from my great grandmothers non-noble family financed a smaller "manor" (called herrgård in swedish) with some land which the family still has. It doesn't generate any value today and everyone has regular jobs.

Would you like to join r/noblesseoblige?

u/protespojken avatar

Sure!

Very small number of Swedish families belong to the uradel or urfrälse, it is nice to have such heritage.

Mine can be traced back to Charlemagne on my mom's and dad's and Alfred the Great on dad's.

Were his maternal grandmother’s parents brother and sister?

u/Rough_Maintenance306 avatar

No. 2nd cousins. Though sadly I can see why you'd think that. It was probably bad karma for the grandmother being a Nazi

It’s a weird coincidence that they’re so similar, I guess

Unfortunately for this man, his maternal grandmother was indeed a Nazi sympathiser. Her own husband and children turned against her and she became one of the most hated people in Denmark.

They make me think of the old joke about the Norfolk bakery:

‘In Bread for Two Hundred Years.’ 🥖

Apologies to any Norfolk Men (or Norfolk Broads) here.

u/Rough_Maintenance306 avatar

That’s a pretty good one.

“It’s the way I tell ‘em!” (Frank Carson)

u/Rough_Maintenance306 avatar

I shall sample more of his work

The Norfolk Bakery wasn’t Frank’s but the catch phrase “It’s the way I tell ‘em” was his trademark.

This joke was his, however:

There was a man sitting in the dining room of the Titanic and he said: “I know I asked for ice, but this is ridiculous”.
