You can build a Vargfarm
Ruins and hound attacks are your best bet, I solely rely on hound attacks for gems now, they basically come as a free package of food and gems every few days
I mean, Winona can make fully automatic varg farms. And if you survived at least a year you will get all kinds of hounds.
Unfortunately the quickest way to gather rocks is stone bushes, which is the essential item for catapults. Sadly, you have to use them if you don't have any other reliable rock sources left.
A mole farm can give an endless amount of minerals. It doesn't require maintenance once set up and can double as a farm for morsels and even krampus
It is a late game option, you can't tell someone to build a mole farm to farm purple gems.
Not for gems but for rocks. A mole farm gives rocks, flint, nitre and gold. I rely on a big mole farm in my lights out world so I never run out of tools. It's sightly over day 100, so not that late in the game
We were talking about the fastest way to get purple gems. I just suggested stone fruits for the rocks to build the statues, and catapults if they are going to use Winona. The OP can go and get rocks from rocky, or mosaic biomes too. Also, I called moleworm farm late game farm because of it's speed
Play long enough, and you'll have enough red/blue gems from Hounds. In the winter, you can grind McTusk camps every 3 days or so for teeth. In all seasons, you can grind the hounds that a varg summons.
If you're using mods, Multi Rocks + boulder regrowth can get you a ton.
Varg farm is the way to go, and it requires exactly 7 gems to setup (6 if you are already winona)
1 for shadow manipulator, 2 for telelocator staff, 3 for telelocator focus, 1 for switching characters. Each time you get 3 more purple gems you can add a varg to the farm to make it better
It's an investment but is by far the best way to get gems in the endgame, nothing matches the power of this farm

Wolfy boy can kill everything twice as fast sure but it’s not necessary. As long as you have plenty of armor and healing you’ll be fine.
I always wrap 4 ham bats and use jelly beans to heal me up with thulecite crowns. Football helmets and perogi should do just fine.
Be sure to bring potions along to the ruins.

This question seems flawed. If all you are doing is character swaps, you don't need the best way to farm purple gems. A varg farm is the best way, but it gives extreme amounts of gems that you don't need.
Assuming you don't have a habit of skipping hound attacks, you should get enough purple gems passively to support character changes.
my varg farms gems is just used for farming nmfuel/spider eggs by spam switching maxwell/webber
I guess that's Interesting? I'm not sure why you would want so many spider eggs and I'm sure there are better ways to get nightmare fuel though.
other best way is monkey farming, but its about the same efficiency. i just use the spider eggs and put a bunch on a boat with a houndious nearby for a bunch of silk
