"Saving Silverman" is a 2001 comedy that was released theatrically to mostly scathing reviews while grossing only 26 million against a production budget of 22 million. The theatrical cut was rated PG-13. The cast featured Jason Biggs, Jack Black, Steve Zahn, Amanda Peet (who is stunningly gorgeous) and R. Lee Ermey. While by no means a good film, it still makes me laugh even though I should know better. The film has gained a cult following over the years particularly after its DVD release which contained an alternate R-rated director's cut that featured alternate footage and dialogue which was raunchier than the PG-13 cut. Most people found the R-rated cut to be funnier as well. The film is definitely a product of its time and indicative of American comedies of the late 90's and early 2000's. Turn your brain completely off and you might find yourself laughing quite a bit. The fact that the main characters play in a Neil Diamond tribute band (Neil does make a cameo) adds to the charm of the comedic proceedings as well.
Mill Creek Entertainment brings "Saving Silverman" to blu-ray in a bare bones release. Despite the PG-13 rating on the back of the case, on the disc art itself and at the beginning of the film, the version of the film included in this release is the 96 minute R-rated director's cut, not the 92 minute PG-13 theatrical cut.
The film is presented in its original 1.85:1 aspect ratio utilizing the AVC codec at a decent bit rate usually hovering around the mid 20's. The film overall looks good and a nice step up from the ancient DVD. Detail, color saturation and contrast/black levels appear natural and solid overall. There are some slight issues with macroblocking here and there but nothing that I found particularly egregious. Fans should be pleased with how "Saving Silverman" looks on this blu-ray release.
Sound is presented in English DTS-HD 2.0 channel audio sounding clear and punchy. The 5.1 surround track from the DVD was not included on this blu-ray. English subtitles in white font are included for the hearing impaired.
No extras are included which is disappointing due to the DVD contained an audio commentary track, outtakes and the theatrical trailer. Add in the fact that only the 2 channel audio track was included rather than both the 2.0 channel track & 5.1 mix like the DVD and I have to give this blu-ray release only a 3 star rating. Yes, the film looks & sounds solid but the fact that fans can't part ways with their DVD release is frustrating. Fans who have been waiting quite some time for "Saving Silverman" to get a blu-ray release will be puzzled as to why nothing was ported over from the 20 year old DVD release. It would have been cool for the PG-13 cut to also have been included too. At least the picture quality and 2.0 channel audio is very solid which makes this bare bones release worth picking up regardless.
