No one has ever consistantly affected me with their lyrics the way Al Stewart has. Very few have impressed me with their instrumental talent the way Al Stewart has. "Necromancer" has a quality of truth about human nature mixed with incredibly produced music. "Trains" is in the vein of "Roads to Moscow" in its personal and very thought-provoking view of history. "Feel Like" is a decent effort at a Top Forty hit. The lyrics are better than Top Forty allows, though. All-in-all, I think Al Stewart is a true artist. I was not disappointed with this album. In fact, I was left extremely satisfied after multiple listenings. I hope you will give this album a listen, too. But when you do, LISTEN to it. Don't let yourself get distracted with the phone, the neighbors, or the dog. Listen and Love it!

Like some other reviewers of this CD I have been a fan of Al Stewart for many years. He has always struck me as one of the best poets in pop music. I came upon Famous Last Words only last year, but was immediately captivated by it. It is clearly his best work in years. Genie On a Table Top, for example, demonstrates that he has not lost his knack for wonderfully imaginative and poetic lyrics. The Hippo Song is humerous but with a sharp bite. Feel Like is a great "feel good" song and I loved Trains with its sense of nostalgia and lost innocence. If you have ever liked Al Stewart's work this is definitely a CD you will want in your collection.

I only put a 4/5 star because Famous Last Words was cut into a single version and ends right before the big outro. For those who know the True Love, that horn section to finish the track is everything. Anyways, please my friends just start a go fund me to make a full length vinyl!

Great songs and lyrics. His music is hauntingly reminiscent of reincarnated souls lingering in the air and reminding us that physical death isn't the end, but a cyclic repeat of a spiritual life that continues on forever and ever...

I've only recently -- admittedly, very belatedly --- heard this 1993 album by Al Stewart and I'm very pleased with it. I can't believe that one reviewer called this "Uneven and Inconsistent". To my ears that's far from the case. This is a consistently good album, with several excellent songs that that would qualify for another "Best Of" collection. Al Stewart has released many fine albums over the course of his career and "Famous Last Words" is yet another winner.
If you're already an Al Stewart fan, you pretty much know what to expect and he doesn't deviate much from his usual musical template on this album. Those distinctive vocals and well-crafted songs with intelligent lyrics, all backed by Al's impeccable guitar playing and a host of other skilled musicians (including album co-producer Peter White on guitar and keyboards). The end result is a very satisfying and comforting listening experience. Other reviewers have proclaimed the 8-minute "Trains" as one of the album's best songs, and I can only agree. A fine tune that sounds even better with each listen. Other favorites include "Peter On the White Sea", "Charlotte Corday" (co-written with Tori Amos"), and "Don't Forget Me". The CD's booklet includes lyrics to all of the songs.
Don't be concerned that there weren't any "hits" from this album. Even back in the '90s when this was first released, radio had become a non-factor. The core concern is always the quality of the music, and on that note Al Stewart delivered another strong album. Al Stewart fans, don't sleep on "Famous Last Words"; this one is a keeper!

Ein großartiges Spätwerk, stimmig und doch vielseitig
Reviewed in Germany on June 18, 2014
"Famous Last Words" gehört m.

Famous Last Words - Al Stewart
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 7, 2010
This album came out in about 1993 but I only heard "Trains" from it a couple of weeks ago when I purchesed "The best Of Al Stewart". I've now purchesed practically all Al's albums represented on that compilation. I've got all his earlier albums from the 1970's but am estatic over his latest couple of albums. Al is actually getting better as he matures, like a good wine. "Famous Last Words" luckily isn't Al's famous last album. He has many more albums in store.I won't rest until I've got his Famous Last Album.
