Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Disability Services

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga is committed to complying with the Americans with Disabilities Act and assuring that no qualified individual is, by reason of disability, excluded from participation in or denied the benefits of any services, programs, or activities provided by the University.

The Disability Resource Center (DRC) reviews each student’s documentation under the guidelines of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990 and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. ADA mandates that accommodations and adjustments be made in programs and activities in order to provide equal access to qualified persons with disabilities. DRC examines the documentation of each student’s disability to protect the civil rights of the student. Individual determination of appropriate and reasonable accommodations is made specific to the functional limitations of the disability.

Bookstore

The University Bookstore is on the second floor of the University Center, down the hall from the food court. The Bookstore is operated by Barnes & Noble College Bookstores which offers new and used textbooks, course packages, reference materials, and required supplies for classes. The UTC Bookstore also carries imprinted clothing, greeting cards, imprinted novelties, and snacks. The general reference and reading area carries over 1,000 titles, including favorite paperbacks and faculty author titles which can be enjoyed while relaxing in the cybercafé with Internet access.

Services provided include daily book buyback year-round; prices are higher at the end of each semester during final exams week and fluctuate depending upon inventory needs of the bookstore for the next semester. Books are bought at wholesale prices all other times during the semester. The bookstore is the official retailer for University regalia (cap, gown, invitations, and class rings). Student pricing on Dell computers and online textbook ordering can be accessed through the bookstore at utc.bncollege.com.

Course materials are offered in several options: rental, used, new, and digital. Various eBooks are available through YUZU, a digital education platform from Barnes & Noble. UTC participates in the First Day by Course Program which offers participating course materials at a reduced rate to the students digitally on the first day of class.

Shop online at utc.bncollege.com 24/7. In store cash, MasterCard, Visa, American Express, Discover Card, Barnes & Noble gift cards, and the UTC Mocs Card Student Financial Aid (during approved time periods) are accepted. Online ordering for textbooks accepts previously named cards, Barnes & Noble gift cards, and the UTC Mocs Card Student Financial Aid (during approved time periods). Online ordering for general merchandise only Mastercard, Visa, American Express, and Discover Cards are accepted.

Bus System (Mocs Express Shuttle)

In partnership with CARTA, Chattanooga’s public transit provider, the Mocs Express Shuttle transports students around campus and to perimeter parking at no cost. Additionally, a valid UTC ID card has unlimited free access to any CARTA route, including downtown, Hamilton Place, and Northgate. All Mocs Express Shuttle buses are wheelchair accessible. Hours of Operation: Every 6 minutes to each stop, 7:30 a.m. - 8:30 p.m. on class, reading and exam days during the Fall and Spring Semesters. Center for Career and Leadership Development

Located in Room 108 of the University Center, the Center for Career and Leadership Development prepares students to identify and leverage your potential while at UTC, and ultimately, when you transition into the workplace. We have developed a model to help you in becoming the next strong leader, community member, and employee. The Center for Career and Leadership Development assists UTC students and UTC alumni through activities aligned to our four anchor words: EXPLORE, DISCOVER, CONNECT, and ACHIEVE.

Students should engage with the Center early in their time at UTC to clarify their interests, gain experience, discover internships and employment opportunities, serve meaningful causes, and join their emerging career community. The Center for Career and Leadership Development administers UTC’s Handshake platform (a comprehensive connection point between talent and employment opportunities) and hosts/sponsors networking sessions and career fairs throughout the year.

Center for Academic Support and Advisement

Located in Room 335 of the UTC Library, the Center for Academic Support and Advisement (CASA) promotes academic excellence and encourages self-directed learning and exploration. CASA supports all students through tutoring, Supplemental Instruction, and academic coaching and provides additional programs and services to promote student success.  Additionally, the advisors in CASA support students in their academic growth and adjustment to university life. Advisors provide academic advising for most freshmen as well as for students who have not declared a major. Academic Exploration Advisors can assist students with 90+ credit hours in creating a graduation plan. More information available at the Center for Academic Support and Advisement website.

Center for Community Career Education

The Center for Community Career Education (CCCE) welcomes you to our department where we provide effective and meaningful outreach services and programming that engages the university, Hamilton County public schools, community and region.

The Center has a staff of 24 and over 300 individuals who serve as work study students, interns, tutors, teachers, mentors and graduate assistants. The Center serves over 4,500 individuals in the community and region, annually.  We take pride in our services and our ability to affect a positive change among the individuals we serve. Programs housed in the department are:

• Educational Opportunity Center (EOC):  provides 1,000 adults in 5-county region with college admissions and financial aid          
• Life Planning:  serves single parents
• GEAR UP:  serves a cohort of students that begins in 6th grade and continues through the Freshman year in college.     
• Postsecondary Awareness With Success (PAWS):  serves 4th and 5th graders at Brown Academy through mentoring by UTC students
• Talent Search:  serves 500 middle school and high school students in Hamilton County               
• Upward Bound:  serves high school students in Hamilton County with year-round services that include tutoring, college visitations, admissions, financial aid, summer resident camps and cultural experiences.
• Upward Bound Math/Science:  serves high school students in Hamilton County with an interest in STEM fields.  UBMS also provides year-round services that include tutoring, college visitations, admissions, financial aid, summer resident camps and cultural experiences.
• Each One Reach One (EORO):  serves 12 students majoring in high demand fields of education.  The program provides scholarships to TN residents.
• College Knowledge, Now!:  serves an average of 3,000, 4th and 5th graders annually with a ½ day field trip to UTC where they get to pretend they are college students.

Center for Professional Education

The Center for Professional Education is the primary outreach division of UTC. Our mission is to provide professional and workforce development training opportunities for those who are already in the workforce or who are looking to enter a new career opportunity.  Programming opportunities include professional credentialing programs for Supply Chain, Project Management, Human Resources, and Information Technology.  Workforce development programming included certification programs in medical careers, IT security, web development, and cloud computing.

Check Cashing Service

The Bursar’s Office provides a check cashing service for up to $50.00 for students, staff, and faculty. (Only one check per person, per day may be cashed.) A validated UTC ID, or a current fee paid receipt and a valid driver’s license, must be presented at the time check is cashed.

Computer Network and Acceptable Use Practices: Privileges and Responsibilities

Students are expected to read, understand, and follow UTC’s “Acceptable Use Practices” policy. The full description of Acceptable Use Practices for UTC is available online. 

The University Print and Mail Services is located in the Administrative Building, 400 Palmetto St., Room 208. Convenience copiers are located throughout the University campus. The UTC Print Center provides a wide range of copying and printing services including booklets, display signs, brochures, catalogs and more. We are committed to providing the most cost-effective services available for your printing needs. We can do most print jobs in-house, but we also work in partnership with several local vendors for specialty projects. We are available to help you plan your publishing project from concept to completion.

Mail services include faculty, staff, and student mail pickup and delivery Monday through Friday as well as delivery of print jobs. The following services are available: fax service, overnight mail service, copying, printing, booklet making, copy paper delivery, and special projects. Counseling Center

The Counseling Center offers enrolled students a variety of mental health services including: individual and group counseling, psychiatric services, and crisis intervention. Consultation services, workshops and other programs are developed and available for the University community as needed. The Counseling Center staff includes professionally trained counselors and other helping professionals who have achieved appropriate certification and/or licensure at the state and national levels. Graduate level counseling students work under the supervision of the Center’s professional staff.

Issues for which students receive counseling include: relationship difficulties, roommate issues, difficulty in classes, adjusting to college, family issues, depression, anxiety, suicidal ideation, and other mental health concerns. The Center is open 8 AM to 5 PM, Monday through Friday. If a student is experiencing a crisis or emergency, they may be seen at any time during business hours. If a mental health emergency happens after office hours, please call the CARE line at 423-425-CARE(2273) to speak with a professional.

The services of the Center are confidential and free to students with the exception of psychiatric appointments. Individuals are evaluated by staff counselors to determine what types of services are appropriate. Center staff can provide referrals for students who need more intensive or specialized services. Students may contact the Counseling Center by phone at (423) 425-4438, visit our website or stop by the University Center, Room 338 to schedule an appointment.

Dining Services

UTC Dining Services, operated by Aramark recognizes the hectic and demanding schedule that college students balance. The key to dining satisfaction is a variety of options, and at UTC you’ll find something for every taste.

From national offerings like Subway, Chick-Fil-A, Starbucks, Panda Express, Freshens, Einstein Brother’s, and Moe’s Southwest Grill to campus brands like our new Local Restuarant Row, the choices go on and on. The University Center Food Court offers the largest selection and Campus Crossroads is the place for the best in all-you-can-eat dining.

Campus meal plans offer the most bang for your buck, and all residential Freshman & Sophomore who living campus must enroll in one of the campus meal plans.

Email

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga adopts email as an official means of communication with students. 

Each student, upon enrolling, is issued a UTC email account with an address on the mocs.utc.edu domain. This is the account used for University business and official University communications to students. Students are expected to regularly check their UTC accounts for University communications. Students may use the UTC account for personal communication at their discretion. 

UTC accounts remain the property of the State of Tennessee. The University reserves the right to disable accounts after graduation or other severance from the University. 

The expanding reliance on electronic communication among students, faculty, staff, and administration at UTC is motivated by the convenience, speed, cost-effectiveness, and environmental advantages of using email rather than printed communication. Because of this increasing reliance and acceptance of electronic communication, email is considered an official means for communication. 

Implementation of these guidelines ensures that students have access to this critical form of communication. These guidelines seek to ensure that all students can access email as the need arises.

The University offers a wide range of opportunities for students to study, intern, or research abroad while earning academic credit. Through the University’s partnerships with providers and institutions around the world, UTC students may participate in study abroad programs for a summer, semester or full year. The Office of Study Abroad has affiliate partnerships with several study abroad program providers including: AIFS, API, CIEE, CIS Abroad, ISA, ISEP, KEI, SFS, SIT Study Abroad, and USAC.

In addition, opportunities for creative activities abroad including international internships and research abroad can be pursued through the Office of Study Abroad. The office staff also recruits for and advises on State Department sponsored scholarship programs including the Boren Award for International Study, the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship, and the Critical Language Scholarship Program.   

Students will be required to register for a non-credit exchange class that certifies them as participants in the UTC study abroad program. Interested students should visit the website.

Normally, nontraditional credit will not apply toward the last 24 hours of residency. However, students who have completed their last 24 hours of traditional course work at UTC prior to participation in the UTC study abroad program need not petition for an exception to the final 24-hour residency requirement.

Health Services

The staff of the University Health Services (UHS) seeks to give every student optimum health care. Services include visits for acute and chronic illnesses, physical exams, screenings, immunizations, lab services, on site testing for illnesses (such as strep, COVID, and flu), TB skin testing and allergy shots. UHS is located in the Maclellan Gymnasium facility in the center of campus. The entrance to UHS is off Terrell Owens Drive, directly across from the University Center entrance. University Health Services is staffed by nurse practitioners and provides primary health services to students. There is no charge for office visits, and minimal charges for services such as laboratory tests and immunizations. We strongly encourage all students to carry personal health insurance, either through their family health plan or by enrolling in the UT Student Health Insurance Program, an affordable health care coverage plan.

Students are required to bring their UTC ID at every visit. University Health Services does not accept insurance, but your insurance card is needed for any outside laboratory testing, imaging, or referrals.

Housing

Applications for housing are available online. Contracts are offered for the academic year (August to May), as well as the summer (May to August). Cancellation of a contract, once the room is occupied, requires approval from the Department of Housing and Residence Life and is subject to additional charges and fees as stated in the contract.

The University offers a program of differentiated housing which allows students the option of living in facilities with different types of programming, supervision, and visitation. Information Technology (IT)

The mission of the Division of Information Technology is to serve as the innovative strategic partner in advancing UTC’s drive to excellence in teaching, research and public service. 

The Help Desk supplies technical support including troubleshooting of hardware and software and assistance in connecting to the campus network. Audiovisual technology is provided through permanent classroom installations and equipment delivery upon request. For more information on technology services, visit our website.

Insurance

The University recommends that students obtain separate hospitalization and medical insurance. A health insurance policy is offered through the University and covers a schedule of expenses for surgery and hospitalization in case of accident or illness. International students may have health insurance requirements (see international student section above). Information about this policy is mailed to students in the summer. Additional information is available on the University Health Services website.

A few of the academic programs (such as nursing) have a health insurance requirement; students should inquire directly with the program director if there is a question regarding their program requirements.

Veteran and Military Affairs

Any covered individual will be able to attend or participate in the course of education during the period beginning on the date on which the individual provides to the educational institution a certificate of eligibility for entitlement to educational assistance under chapter 31 or 33 (a “certificate of eligibility” can also include a “Statement of Benefits” obtained from the Department of Veterans Affairs’ (VA) website – eBenefits, or a VAF 28-1905 form for chapter 31 authorization purposes) and ending on the earlier of the following dates:

1. The date on which payment from VA is made to the institution.
2. 90 days after the date the institution certified tuition and fees following the receipt of the certificate of eligibility.
3. The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga will not impose any penalty, including the assessment of late fees, the denial of access to classes, libraries, or other institutional facilities, or the requirement that a covered individual borrow additional funds, on any covered individual because of the individual’s inability to meet his or her financial obligations to the institution due to the delayed disbursement funding from VA under chapter 31 or 33.

Mocs Card

The University provides each student with an official University ID card, the Mocs Card. This card can be used for the following purposes:

Admission to athletic events
Secure door access validation
Checking out books, laptops, etc., UTC Library
Obtaining special rates and privileges at many University functions
Indication of an individual’s right to use University facilities
Meal Plan swipe access

University Health Services

A student’s account can be managed online through the GET app by registering at https://get.cbord.com/utc/full/prelogin.php. Money can be added to your mocs card online through the GET app by depositing Scrappy Cash using a credit card. Also, deposits can be made in the form of cash or check in the UTC Bursar’s Office, 274 University Center.  

The ID Office is located in the University Center, Room 262, next to the University Bookstore. The phone number is (423) 425-2218. A student’s initial Mocs Card is intended to last throughout a student’s entire stay at UTC. Lost or stolen cards should be reported immediately through the GET app found on the Mocs Card Office webpage (https://www.utc.edu/finance-and-administration/auxiliary-services/mocs-card). UTC is not liable for any loss of funds due to misuse or theft of a student’s Mocs Card. Replacement cards (lost, broken or damaged) are made at the ID Office for a cost of $30.00 to be paid at the Bursar’s Office. Once a replacement card is made, the previous card cannot be reactivated under any circumstances. No fee is charged for the initial card. Replacement of a card due to a change in cardholder status or name is free; however, the old card must be presented in exchange. The filing of a police report does not waive the replacement fee of a stolen card.

Money deposited in book points or Scrappy Cash may be refunded to students upon graduation, in accordance with the University policy. At the time of account closure, a $15 service fee and any other debts due to the University will be deducted from the balance. The University does not process refund checks for under $3; therefore, no refunds will be given for balances of $18 or less. A completed Account Closure Request Form must be submitted to the Mocs Card Office for processing. See Mocs Card Brochure for more detailed information or visit our website.

Mocs One Center

The Mocs One Center is a one-stop office that helps students with Financial Aid, Scholarships, Bursar and Registrar related questions. You may receive assistance by visiting the office in 124 University Center or by submitting a question via our Service Request on the website.

The University is committed to making the campus a safe environment for its citizens. Each year UTC publishes the Campus Safety and Law Enforcement Handbook which includes campus crime statistics for the three most recent calendar years as well as various campus policies concerning law enforcement, the reporting of criminal activity, and crime prevention programs. Arts-Based Collaborative

The Arts-Based Collaborative at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (ABC at UTC) is a community-engaged center under the College of Health, Education, and Professional Studies. Formerly known as the Southeast Center for Education in the Arts (SCEA), ABC at UTC builds off the center’s extensive history of facilitating interdisciplinary programs in and through the arts. The mission of ABC at UTC is to integrate arts-based solutions across multiple fields and disciplines to shape a collaborative workforce while amplifying diverse voices, perspectives, and skillsets into an arts-rich world of today and tomorrow. Under the guidance of the Lyndhurst Chair of Excellence in Arts Education, ABC at UTC activates its mission by collaborating with teaching artists to facilitate classroom residencies in conjunction with program partners, including our affiliate with the Wolf Institute for Early Learning through the Arts. UTC students pursuing careers in arts education have opportunities to work alongside ABC at UTC teaching artists and contribute to other interdisciplinary projects such as the Simulated Patient Actor Program in partnership with the UTC School of Nursing’s graduate programs and activities focused on STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics) in collaboration with the Challenger STEM Learning Center.

Student Handbooks

Distributed at the beginning of each academic year, the Student Handbook provides detailed information on student services. It also contains information on the Student Government Association and specific rules for the purpose of regulating campus life. These rules are stated in the Honor Code, Student Conduct Code, and other codes regulating groups.

Student Support Services

Support Services (SSS) is a federally funded TRIO program that offer free services specifically designed to enhance the retention and graduation of underrepresented UTC students. The program offers the services to students from low-income and first-generation backgrounds and students with a documented disability. Students must apply to be accepted into the program. The services are as follows:

• Academic Tutoring – SSS provides instructional support outside the classroom to help you master specific course content. One-on-one instruction is provided by peer and professional tutors who have training and expertise in math, science and other subjects. 
• Academic Advising – SSS staff assist with questions about degree paths, plans for specific needs, and helps to ensure that you make timely progression towards a degree.
• Course Planning – SSS staff helps you in identifying and examining your strengths and limitations in order to create a manageable schedule of classes.
• Personal Counseling – SSS staff provides strategies on how to improve your levels of motivation, involvement, academic self-confidence and goal commitment.
• Academic Monitoring - SSS collects, Pre-Midterm and Midterm reports that will provide information in time for you to take action and improve course grades.
• Graduate/Professional School Coaching – SSS staff assists with selecting the right program, researching financial aid options and completing application packages.
• Career Planning/Coaching- SSS staff supports each state of the career process, from choosing majors and crafting a resume to finding the right internship or first career.
• Financial Support/Financial Literacy – SSS provides support to help you gain knowledge of additional financial resources through workshops, individual counseling, and an SSS online financial literacy course. You can apply for direct SSS financial support and scholarships for fall and spring semesters.
• Academic and Social Events - SSS provides cultural events and workshops on study skills, time management, career planning, personal development and other topics of interest.
• Computer Lab/Study Space - SSS space is reserved for only SSS students to work on a computer with Zoom capabilities, print coursework and make copies. SSS students are also free to use our space for studying, group meetings, etc.

Transcripts

Transcripts of a student’s academic record are released only with the student’s written authorization. All transcript requests are submitted online.  Information about the ordering process and a link to the order website can be found online.

Transcripts are not released for students who have an indebtedness of any type to the University.

University Center

The University Center, or “UC,” is a 200,000+ square foot facility that serves as the hub of campus activity. It houses many student services and support office, including Admissions, Bursars Office, the campus Bookstore, Center for Career and Leadership Development, Center for Wellbeing, Counseling Center, Dean of Students Office, Disability Resource Center, Financial Aid and Scholarships, Mocs One Center, Mocs Cards Office, Mocs Dining Office (Aramark), New Student and Family Programs, Office of Student Conduct, Office of Student Outreach and Support, Office of the University Registrar, Title IX Coordinator, and Veteran and Military Affairs. 

The UC also houses a Game Room with pool and ping pong tables, retro arcade games, and the latest gaming consoles.  In the same space is UTC’s e-sports space.  In the UC you will also find a food court with 600-seat Commons, and the Student Media Center, home of The Perch, the University Echo, and Mocs News.

The UC also hosts numerous campus activities and events in our various meetings and event spaces, including a 300-seat Auditorium, two 5,000+ sq. ft. event rooms, and numerous smaller meeting rooms that are utilized by UTC departments as well as our numerous registered student organizations.
