WASHINGTON — A crash on southbound DC 295 involving a pedestrian bridge caused traffic headaches in the area of Kennilworth Avenue and Douglas Street Northeast. Firefighters say debris from a driver's passing truck struck the bridge and ended up in the road.
Firefighters say the bridge is still standing, and no injuries were reported as a result of the collision, but inspectors had to evaluate the structural integrity of the pedestrian bridge.
Police and firefighters finished their investigation and cleared the road of debris. All southbound lanes of DC 295 were closed for the investigation but have since reopened.

Another bridge in the same area collapsed back in 2021 following a similar crash. That bridge — located at Kenilworth Avenue and Lane Place, Northeast — collapsed just before noon on June 23, 2021, following a crash involving a tractor trailer. Six people were hospitalized as a result of that crash and the bridge had to be rebuilt.
Editor's Note: This story previously stated that the bridge hit on Wednesday was the same bridge that collapsed in 2021. However, it was two different bridges less than a half-mile apart over DC 295. The bridge affected Wednesday is the Douglas Street Pedestrian Bridge; the bridge that collapsed was the Lane Place Pedestrian Bridge.
