Newcastle High School for Girls - Open Days

Open days and visits.

It's so important that you and your daughter have the opportunity to explore her potential new school. Our main Open Days are held in the Autumn Term, but we do also operate Open Weeks in the Spring and Summer Terms, as well as private visits if that is more suitable.  

Open days

NHSG is an academically selective school, and all applicants are invited to take an entrance assessment or examination as detailed below.

Applications for the Spring and Summer Terms of 2024 may still be accepted and our Admissions team will confirm if places are available in the Year Group you are applying for. Please click on the link below to start your daughter's application.

Early Years and Foundation Stage Entry

Assessments for girls joining us in the Early Years (Nursery and Reception) are based on verbal and practical activities.

Your daughter's assessment will last approximately 30 minutes.

Years 1 - 6 Entry

Your daughter will join us for part of the school day, the length of which will depend on her age. During that time, your daughter will be assessed in Reading, Writing, Spelling and Mathematics.

Girls who are applying for entry to Year 5 and Year 6 will also have an interview with the Head of Junior School.

A report will also be requested from your daughter's current school.

Year 7 Entry

To be assessed for Year 7 entry, your daughter will undertake:

  • A written English comprehension paper and writing exercise lasting 45 minutes.
  • A paper testing mathematical ability lasting 45 minutes that covers areas of the national Numeracy Strategy in the Year 6 programme of study.
  • A computer based test that measures verbal, numerical and non-verbal ability.
  • An interview with a member of the teaching staff.

We will also require a report from your daughter’s present school.

Year 8, 9 & 10 Entry

For entry into our Senior School in Year 8 and above, your daughter will undertake:

  • A written English comprehension paper and an extended writing exercise lasting approximately 90 minutes.
  • A paper testing mathematical ability lasting 60 minutes.
  • A Non Verbal Reasoning paper which will assess your daughter’s problem solving using logic and reasoning; this paper lasts 30 minutes.
  • A Verbal Reasoning paper to assess your daughter’s ability to understand and reason using words.
  • An interview with a member of the Senior Leadership Team.

We will also require a report from your daughter’s present school.

Sixth Form Entry

Your daughter will be required to attend an interview with the Head and Director of Sixth Form.

She will also be required to attain nine GCSEs, of which at least six should be at Grade 6, 7, 8 or 9. In addition, depending on her A Level subject choices, she may be required to achieve a particular grade in a specified GCSE subject or subjects as set out in our Sixth Form Course Details brochure for the year she is applying for.

We will also require a report from your daughter's present school.

 

GDST Transfers

Transfers from other GDST schools can be arranged subject to a place being available and with the agreement of the Head.

NHSG Bursary, Scholar and Exhibition Awards

Newcastle High School for Girls is proud to offer an awards programme for girls joining our Senior School at the start of Year 7 and also for the start of Year 12. It’s our responsibility to create an environment that encourages excellence and educates tomorrow’s leaders, which is why we believe in supporting and rewarding the brightest, most talented, gifted and dedicated girls, regardless of their financial circumstances.

For Year 7, we offer Scholar, Exhibition (Dance, Drama, Music and Sport) and Bursary Awards. For Year 12, girls can apply for Scholar, our new Exhibition (Art, Dance, Drama, Music and Sport) and Bursary awards.

Please note that our NHSG Awards deadline for entry to 2024 has now passed and we will not be able to accept any further applications for Bursaries, Exhibition or Scholar Awards.

The programme will be open again for entry into 2025 at Year 7 and 12 only in due course.

We'll take the stress out of the school run.

The school run can be stressful. If you’re considering making an application to our school, you'll be relieved to learn that our reliable, fully chaperoned, school mini-bus service offers a variety of routes from across the region, and it can be as flexible as you need it to be. We even run a shuttle bus service between our Junior and Senior School sites. Our school bus service also helps to reduce the numbers of cars on the road (which our planet will thank us for).

Janice Graves - Newcastle High School for Girls

I have a wide-ranging role at NHSG leading on the Marketing, Communications, Admissions, Administration, Alumnae and Philanthropy areas of the school. It's my aim to ensure that our School's values and ethos are shared with prospective and current parents, as well as pupils, to deliver excellent services and experiences both inside and outside of School. I also am responsible for leading our busy alumnae relations programme and, through that, I meet many inspirational women who are leading the way in their fields, and whose education at our school has shaped their lives.

Very often I am the first person prospective parents get to know at NHSG, and my role is to guide you through the process of enquiring, visiting and making an application for your daughter. I will support you right from your first contact with the School to the day your daughter potentially joins NHSG. It's an absolute pleasure to be able to meet so many families searching for the best school for their daughter. My aim is for you to have an excellent experience and feel part of the NHSG community from day one.

In my role, I work alongside the Admissions Manager to support you when you are making an enquiry or application to the School.  I am responsible for the administrative aspects of admissions making sure these are dealt with quickly and efficiently.  I also meet with parents and girls at our Open events and when girls are completing their entrance assessments. We aim to put everyone at ease, parents and pupils, through our warm and friendly approach.
