La trompa de Falopio. �Qu� pensar�a hoy Gabriele Falloppio del �rgano que describi� en 1561?

RESUMEN
Han transcurrido 451 a�os desde que el gran anatomista italiano
Gabriele Fallopio hizo la descripci�n m�s aproximada de lo que
se conoce actualmente como salpinge, oviducto o trompa uterina.
La fertilizaci�n
in vitro (FIV) ha demostrado claramente que las
trompas de Fallopio no son esenciales para la concepci�n animal
y humana; sin embargo, el conocimiento de la fisiolog�a tubaria
fue un paso esencial para el desarrollo de la pr�ctica moderna
de la reproducci�n asistida. Fallopio describi� detalladamente la
posici�n, forma, curso, volumen y caracter�sticas de las trompas
uterinas, aunque ahora se sabe que el conducto que �l explic�
es en realidad un �rgano fascinante que tiene una construcci�n
anat�mica e histol�gica compleja y altamente especializada que
le permiten ser el centro del proceso reproductivo y participar en
importantes funciones. Sin duda alguna, el gran Fallopio quedar�a
gratamente sorprendido si supiera cu�nto se ha ampliado el
conocimiento sobre el maravilloso �rgano que �l describi�; seguramente
su sorpresa ser�a mucho mayor a la que tuvo cuando
disec� las trompas uterinas por primera vez, desmintiendo todos
los conceptos que estaban vigentes en ese momento.
