Miner, Allen H.
Allen H. Miner passed away on Jan 4, 2004 in San Marcos, CA at the age of 86. He will be laid to rest at Fort Rosecrans on Jan 15th, with full military honors. He leaves behind his beloved wife of 63 years, Margie Miner. Allen's family was the heart of his being, and he was loved by all who came into his life. He also leaves behind son Rick and daughter-in-law Joyce Miner, daughter Kathy Miner, son Peter Miner, Ron and daughter-in-law Noi Miner, Don and daughter-in-law Denise Miner. Allen also had eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Allen loved the ocean and was an avid sailor. That joy is instilled in all of his children. Allen had an accomplished life, full of great memories and adventures. After growing up on the east coast in New York and Philadelphia, he graduated from Yale University with a degree in fine arts. Soon after graduating, Allen enlisted in the US Army becoming a combat photographer, capturing newsreel film of beach head battles in the South Pacific, including the landing of General McArthur in the Philippines. After serving in the Army, Allen's primary career became one in the film and movie industry. He was a member of the DGA, WGA, and Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Some of Allen's Director feature films are as follows; The Naked Sea, Old Man and the Sea, Chubasco, Black Patch, Ride Back, and Ghost Town. He had the rare opportunity to spend two months with Ernest Hemingway fishing for marlin in Cuba for "The Old Man and the Sea". One of dads favorite quotes from Hemingway that summed up his feeling in life was "I had a great inheritance from my father. It was the moon and sun, and although I have traveled around the globe, the spending is never done". His television credits include Route 66, the Untouchables, Perry Mason, Checkmate, Dr. Kildare, Twilight Zone, Wagon Train, Naked City, and the Lawless Years. Allen's life and the wonderful memories he leaves behind will be cherished forever by his family and friends, and his film career will remind us his spirit will continue to live on through the industry he loved so much, entertainment. A simple thank you. Taking his chemistry class, along with the G.I. Bill, sparked my interest and
desire to obtain a degree in pharmacy. For that I am forever grateful!

It's been a number of months and the hole you have left just widens. I miss the sparkle in your eyes that always lit up a room when we came to visit. Dear Marge and Miner Family:
I have very fond memories of your Dad during our years as neighbors on Tuallitan Rd. The big blue house on the hill was always full of activity. I especially remember all the kids, the boats, and Martin Milner (wow, as a kid that was exciting to have him around). And, more importantly, your Dad was especially helpful and supportive of my Mom since my Dad died in 1974. He always looked out for her, brought her flowers from his garden, made sure she was getting along ok on a daily basis. I thank him and Marg for being such great, friendly and helpful neighbors. That certainly made my Mom's life on Tuallitan much fuller. I know he will be missed. My prayers and thoughts are with all of you.
Fondly, Sally

Dear Dad,
How do I find the words to describe 57 years of being your first born son?
You were my loving, talented, passionate, creative, successful and proud Dad. You were my idol, role model, mentor, captain, my favorite Director/Producer/Writer. Your creative talents and visual mastery were special gifts that you passed on to me.
Your love and passion for the water, boating, fishing, photography, filmmaking, directing and writing are forever embedded in my life. You always told me, “ The apple does not fall far from the tree”. Thank you and Thank God!
Bon voyage!!! Smooth sailing! One day I’ll be cruising alongside and you’ll be my Captain again and I’ll be your first mate.
In the meantime, have fun with all your show biz buddies; Lee Marvin, Bill Conrad, Bette Davis, Earnest Hemingway, Stanley Adams, Dick Gregory, and many more. They all have been waiting for their favorite Director.
I know your loving hands will be on my shoulder guiding me through the smooth & stormy seas.
Know that we will take care of Mom. She will remain secure and loved by all the family, grand kids and great grand kids until she too will sail by your side.
Your resting place at Point Loma gives you an eternal view of the harbor and Pacific Ocean we loved and sailed together. You also have the vantage point of where your film career began with The Naked Sea. It is still one of the best sea pictures ever made.
Your long time friend of 50+ years, Hal Gefsky, sent this poem for all of us to read. I bet you will be making this into a movie.
Do not stand by my grave and weep
I am not there, I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awake in the morning hush, I am the swift uplifting rush
of quiet birds in circling flight.
I am the soft star shine at night.
Do not stand by my grave and cry.
I am not there, I did not die...

My sincere
sympathy goes out to you and your dear children on the loss of your
beloved husband, Allen. Your daughter, Kathy, and my daughter, Susan
shared many happy times throughout their childhood years in your home and
the memories with you and Allen are dear to them. It is beautiful that
you had so many precious years together. May this treasured thought and
the love of your children comfort you and bless you in the years to
follow." Warmest wishes, June Russell Pass (Sue Rose's mother)

Dear Margie, Kathy, Rick, Ron, Peter and Don.....
My memories of Allen are rooted in my childhood and teen years. Times spent at the Miner house on Tuallitan were THE BEST! The house was always teeming with activity, people, fun and craziness...Allen up in his bird sanctuary full of spit and vinegar. As a younger person sometimes this intimidated me; as the (occasionally mature) adult I've become I now know that was enthusiasm and spirit and energy for life. It might not have been Father Knows Best or The Cleavers, but.....it sure had a longer and more exciting run!!!! There are so many times I wish that my own father could have been here for this or that occasion. YOu were blessed to have him so long. More memories to cherish!
With love and sympathy, Sue Rose (Simms)

Allen H. Miner was my father. For 56 years I have learned and loved from his inspiration. No words can express the countless memories I have every time I see a flower garden, a ocean with a sailboat, a stray animal, a old black and white movie, a lily pond.
To me he was a prince among men, my inspiration, my legacy. He gave me a privileged life that ultimately allowed me to focus on giving to those that have been less fortunate.
God speed Dad. Thank you for your time here with me. I am proud and honored to be your only daughter. I will see you again one day and we will once again sail the ocean, feed the animals and water the plants.

Dad,
You were always there for me and my family. You accomplished so much in your life. But none more important to me then being a wonderful father and role model. I remember sailing every weekend like it was yesterday. You showed me the importance or being honest and how to have integrity in everyday life. Thank you for everything, especially your love.
Love forever

Allen was my grandfather. I will forever be greatful to have had 33 years with all 4 of my Grandparents. I will also always be greatful for the inspiration my Grandfather gave to me. I believe a lot of my love for art, film, photography, & my green thumb came from him.
The love my grandparents had for each other will also always inspire me. To love for over 60 years is so rare & so beautiful.
When they moved from LA to San marcos I found some letters my Grandma wrote to him during his 2 years in the war. He saved them all.
There was a poem she sent to him in the letters that I would like to share.
When You Return To Me
When you return to me,
the simple things we knew & loved together
We will share again.
I promise you that I will guard them
With my love & hold them close
That your coming will find them,as you left,
As dear, as beautiful as our 1st kiss.
And this trust will be my joyous labor.
But do not expect my love to be the same
the cry in my heart, the yearning,
Tells me that it has grown.
So to meet your coming, you will find my love
As the snow that falls tonight
covering all things.

I'm sure my grandma's love & her letters helped him to return home safely. Helped him return home to start the family that helped create my father, Rick.Thank you grandpa for having my dad, so that he & my mom, Diane, could have me, & my wonderful brother Michael.
I will always love him. And I will always love & cherish what my Grandparents had together. My wish is for all of us to love like they did.

Allen was a "second" father to me for many wonderful years, and a loving grandfather to my two kids, Michael and Kimberly. I have so many happy memories of our family get-togethers over the years. He and Margie were a very important part of my life and I will always be grateful to them and think of them with love and laughter.

I'm happy to say I knew Allen and always enjoyed seeing him at the Miner's Los Angeles home. Beyond his accomplishments as a film and television director, his greatest legacy is his family, many of whom I count as dear friends.
