Final Space is a serialized intergalactic space saga about an astronaut named Gary and his adorable, planet-destroying friend, Mooncake. The series will follow their adventures as they embark on a quest to unlock the mystery of "Final Space," the place where the entire universe ends.
Season 2 Episode 4 - The Other Side
Um... screwy schedule all around tonight, huh? I hope I don't get in trouble for this. Enjoy!
ETA: IMDB got the show time/channel correct, my DISH schedule and the TBS bumpers were quite incorrect.

The mental scarring that happened to lil Cato must be super messed up
Everyone calling this a filler/one-off episode probably gonna feel real silly when crippling mental damage dealt to our little buddy rears its ugly head eventually.
Other shows, I'd assume they'd "episode-of-the-week" it and ignore any consequences, but I've got more faith in the Final Space crew than that :)
But also :(
Poor lil Cato
People these days have NFI what filler is. Character development is NOT filler.
Especially these days
People think good shows contain only action which is totally dumb and false.
Good shows have their own pace, with their own stories and as long as the complete package is memorable, there are no fillers.
I know your comment was half a year ago but I just got to say this to you:
If what you said is true, why was GoT, a show that didn’t focus on action at all and used it VERY sparingly, the most popular show on Earth? Notice that once the writing suffered but there was more action (S7 and S8) people started to go off it.
Popular =/= good. I hated GoT and have never watched it so I can't really make good comments about it.
Getting the ship stuck in some weird galactical timeloop/multi-dimension fuckery is a classic science-fiction staple. Also usually some of the best and most memorable ones, like in Farsight
I kept reading this as NFL and getting very confused
Well, he actually lived those 60 years, which is a HUGE lot... and he remembers all of it... if we include his depression about his father, yeah, he's getting pretty messed up badly. I feel really sad for Little Cato, plus he is one of my fav characters.
OLAN DID IT, I AM SO HAPPY RIGHT NOW!! It was not expected but I loved the dance scene, especially since Olan has a love for the Loggins.
I can tell this episode is gonna be my favorite so far.
(and oh my gosh, Avocato's voice is so nice to hear)
Ok relax, we know you want him to reply to you but please tone it down.
I will never tone it down when it comes to the little big o
This episode was absolutely fantastic. The reveal towards the beginning with Little Cato talking to Avacato and then panning down to show he's just typing what he wants to hear? Pure perfection.
A VERY good idea that I've never seen done before. I like it a lot.
Dr.Who has had similar episodes but the twist is new to me
That was the point the tears came in, ngl.
*Purrfection.
For a moment I thought they were sent to a different timeline where Avocato is alive and Gary died
eh sorry for late reply 😅
Damn, that was a fantastically heavy episode. And the reveal that it was basically Lil' Cato's hallucinations was a nice twist.
Also, we need more sexy voice Mooncake.
Mooncake needs to have that voice 24/7. It totally cracked me up and yet seemed so fitting.
I wanna episode where Mooncake sings a Louie Armstrong song in that voice.
The ending was what really got me. They just left it at that. There was no just make up and go back to normal. It's clear that this episode will effect Lil's Cato for the rest of the series.
Living 60 years by yourself with only hallucinations to keep you company is fucking brutal, and to have all of that just disappear as if it never happened is just even more fucked up. Now you gotta live those 60 years again ON TOP of the other 60 years you lived in a different universe.
I never even realized they were hallucinations... But everybody in Lilcatos side was on Gary's side...
Thanks for this post. That's why I come here. Cause I don't pick up on things that much. Poor cado!
No problem. I didn't expect an old comment of mine to help out someone understand something. Feels nice
I loved the foreshadowing, when Ash and Fox were still alive on Gary's side despite supposedly dying on Cato's side
Yeah. And I can't believe I never put two and two together at the time.
Best episode of the season (so far). Nice surprises as well.
It was a nice combination of the Star Trek the Next Generation's episode "Remember Me" and Rick & Morty's "Mortynight Run. It's the best episode so far.
The ending also had a hint of the end of TNG's "The Inner Light", with Cato remembering everything.
And Stargate SG1's final episode "Unending".
Oh and that nasty one on DS9 where O'Brien had decades of memories of imprisonment and torture implanted in his head. Ugh.
I am speechless and disturbed i really feel little cado will behave differently. He Wont be as hyper active i feel hes going to attach more to gary but really be to him self.
That's what I'm afraid of; I liked how outgoing he was the past couple episodes. Damn, Olan, why must you torment Spidercat so?
I actually would like that he gets a shift. I feel his out going personallity was a cover up of the grieving he has over his dad. He went from isolation and hatred to over excitement but he has yet to really come to terms with the lose of his dad. He needs to grieve and him putting away the type writer is the 1st step.
Little Cato is now mentally the oldest person on the ship
I can see an arguement of nightfall only cause shes experience at least 100 alternate timelines and outcomes
Little Cato is now mentally the 2nd oldest person on the ship.
I want(ed) to say a lot more, but don't want to monopolize a thread I started. With that out of the way, super-amazing writing! I am with you on Cato, but think this will give impetus to all things Ash. ;)
Considering the universe they're in, it's possible that down the road there could be a way to erase Cado's memories of those lonely 60 years, but if that were to happen, it would come down to a question of morality and ethics of whether it's right to erase your own memories even if they're bad ones, 'cause those memories are what make you you. If you erase them, you're essentially erasing a part of yourself forever. I wonder if that'll happen in a later episode
I dont think he would do that especially since tbose 60 years was the closest thing he had for a life time of memories of his dad. Even if it was with himself it was the closest thing he had to his dad.
Easily my favorite episode of the season and definitely one of the best! But also quite the depressing one too.. My favorite scenes have to be the dancing at the beginning, Little Cato holding a picture of Gary, saying that he misses him prove's their bond will never be broken, (I love that part. Seriously these guys are my favorite duo in any cartoon ever). The titan fight, Little Cato's almost death speech left me crying a bit at the end and I'm glad he survive! And also seeing him trying to move on from his father's death was nice closure. The writing of this episode was amazing! Although Avacato is still not really here, it was great seeing his face and hearing his voice again. Thank you Olan Rogers, this is a beautiful episode!
I am speechless, because just dumb words are coming out trying to describe this episode. I'll stick with "BRAVO!"
It really did surprise me. At first it seemed like a regular fun episode like usual considering they were dancing to fucking Loggins but then it spiraled into deep sadness and depression. Loved this episode. Best one yet, although all of them have been very good
Jesus. That was great. This is right up there with Chapter 6 as one of the best episodes in the show. If I had the teensiest bit of criticism, I felt the ending would have been more impactful had we saw sprinkles of Lil' Cato using the Avocato speaking machine throughout the last three episodes (or hell, from Chapter 7 onwards). It would make it feel more like a defining character moment, and it certainly would have helped the other episodes since they kind of lacked that emotional carryover from Season 1.
yeah i'm inclined to agree with that, Littlecato hasn't mentioned his dad since 10 and even before that 7 was the only real episode where he showed his grief. This episode hit hard yeah but would have hit a ton of times harder if we knew just how bad littlecato was hurting before going in.
Well I wonder if the point was that although it looked like in previous episodes that Lilcato had moved on, he clearly hadn't - he's been 'talking' to his dad the whole time.
Now he is starting to truly move on.
Awesome episode
i think that was the point of revealing that he had the typewriter in the current timeline and didnt invent it during the timeskip
One thing that is important to remember I think is that during all of the first season Lilcato was motivated by revenge and driven by revenge, he couldn't really start to move on until the Supreme Commander was dead.
Given that this season picked up right as the last one ended not long has passed since he will of been able to actually start to get closure and begin being able to move on.
Dammit, Olan REALLY wants to put Little Cato through the wringer...obviously, he was still grappling with Avocato's loss, but he at least seemed to be able to be upbeat and cheerful, especially in his interactions with Gary, within the last few episodes. Seems like this episode torpedoed that, though. Hope he can recover at least a little bit...
So basically Little Cato= Chief O'Brien. ;) ( the Ds9 writers had a motto 'O'Brien must suffer!' ..and now I think about it he ended up carrying around a memory of 20-30 years in a cell that never 'technically' happened )
Holy crap, easily my favorite episode of the season, if not the entire series. I haven't really connected with the last few episodes, but this was a work of art.
I miss Avocato :'(
We ALL do...
Was waiting for the writing to get up to par with season 1. At the end of the episode all i could say was just, damn...
In my opinion, this was one of (if not the best) episode of the show, It was super depressing in a multitude of ways and had fucking amazing writing.
Loggins! And... a marriage! And, where did this thing go? Lovin' it!
Wait, just realized that this means Coty Galloway (Avacato) is still working on the show. This means he might be back sometime this season! Gotta look for a light in the darkness, y'all.
I'm not gonna lie I keep hoping to see more Avocato each episode. Even if it's just flashbacks or something.
I'm predicting episode 7 or 8 if anything. I can't believe that they really just wanna keep running little Cato through an emotional blender, then try to put him back together with old, used Band-Aids. It ain't gonna hold well. Just let that kid have a break for a moment, frickin jeez.
Calling it now, Lil' Cato has his own supernova caterpillar moment.
He’ll BE his own Cato-Pillar.
What? Is this the discussion thread?
I took it upon myself to start the thread, but felt adding the "discussion" part was more than my place.
Well done! I couldn't get away in time.
Cheers, thanks :)
I mean, if the mods haven’t done it, i guess you might as well. Thanks.
No! How can Olan expect me to live another week after seein' little cato like that!? I need, like, the opposite of Loggins. just gonna play enter one on repeat.
I keep getting trapped in this subreddit's spam filter (hopefully I can get that figured out... eventually...) but I wrote a review of the episode which you can read here if you want!
Long story short, though, this episode pretty much proved to me that Final Space can still work in the more episodic format that Season 2 goes by. "The Other Side" doesn't pull any punches, and it cuts as deep as the best of Season 1, all while not feeding directly into the overarching narrative, and that's incredible. Love, love, love, love, LOVE this episode.
This episode was AMAZING! Can definitely tell why it was Olan’s favorite. Especially with the reveal Little Cato had gone insane and imagined it all, that was crazy! (Also, nice to hear Avacato’s voice once more)
I must admit, this episode brought out the best in both Gary and in Lil Cato. We got to see a calmer more caring side of Gary and how he really does see lil Cato as his son. Gary, for a little time in this episode, had some great development.

The character writing this episode was amazing.
Wow, best episode of the season so far! Amazing writing!
My brain kinda hurt after this one. But they had me all excited with that Avocato, until they ripped that happiness from me... But overall, absolutely best episode so far of this season. It was good to finally see what's really been going on in Little Cato's head revolving around his father's death and how he thought his father would have thought of him, as well as how he wanted to live up to Avocato. Truly amazing
You know, Olan actually said that episode 4 was his favorite episode of season 2
Mooncake got a translator. That's new.
My fav episode so far. Good to hear avocatos voice again....
I once read a popular mechanics article in the barber where people might in the future be able to do the thing Little Cato is doing...but at the gravesite.
I've read about that too, and it was vaguely referenced in the "Firefly" movie.
Oh right! It was referenced in Serenity.
I didn't watch this episode, so I'm curious: by episode's end, is Little Cato still "Big Cato", or is he physically "Little Cato"? I kinda like him as "Little" Cato. :D
Lil Cato remembers everything he experienced in those 60 years so he's lil'cato physically but inside he's grown a LOT. Luckily Gary knows that kind of empty insanity better than anyone.
Figured as much. :) Still, considering how energetic and outgoing he was the past couple of episodes, I hope Gary will be anle to help him through it...
The answer is: Little Cato is just fine
Bonus answer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cGWbQLYECnc
...I don't get it. I mean, I read the episode review, and I know they manage to rescue him albeit with mental scars...
Omg OLAAAAAAAAAAAN why do you pull on my heart strings like that?!?!?
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH
Episodes liked this one are what make judging the show so damn hard to judge.
It's like Futurama but with a single continuous story and leaning more on drama.
This was a good episode.
Just realized they heavily alluded to the fact that the fight with the Titan wasn’t real when Mooncake used his powers. Which he doesn’t have anymore.
Gahhh that was a well-written episode!
You know, Olan did say that his favorite episode of season 2 was episode 4
Loggins!! Shades of Archer and "Danger Zone."
This is what I want from final space (almost). This episode does so many things right and it is reflected in how people are saying they love this episode. This episode has music which isn’t filler but carries the emotional weight of the scene, it has goofy interactions with Gary without him being dialled back, it has creative story telling and creative comedy which is original but fits in the universe (I actually didn’t like the way moon cake spoke, didn’t seem like his character (not his voice, but the dialogue he says) but when it was inside little Catos head I found it works cause it’s funny without ruining his character, he even references “I don’t remember you being this mean” so I think it was intentional). The only thing I think is missing now is some amazing visuals like season one, I always go back to the trap from season 1 as an example (at 40 seconds, on mobile sorry) https://youtu.be/26LohQBNVIo I want to see more of this and we have FINAL SPACE!!! (still could use so more visual comedy as well but it’s getting there, Olan knows what we love so hopefully more of it comes out in the future episodes)
LEAVE THE SPIDERCAT ALONE!
INDEED.
Olan look at what you've done to this kid! He has depression now!
The heart strings have been pulled
Avocato :( But dang... I went :O when the twist at the end just happened
Everything else has been covered but I gotta say: Married HUE and AVA were fantastic.
This is the episode I’ve been waiting for. Aside from a smidgen from Ash’s backstory, there hasn’t been the heart wrenching feels I knew and loved from season 1. I also hear similar chords from the soundtrack from season 1 but keep hoping for more.
One of the main things I loved about season 1 was the silly antics mixed with the hopelessness of space in the first season. The first 3 episodes felt forced... not saying I didn’t absolutely love cookie wife and cookie kiiiiiddds and the glorious dance scene - to the max core.
Keep up the good work Olan + Team
OIan was right, this is the best episode. Maintains a consistent tone while also having a few well placed dashes of humor. Excellent music for this one. Ive seen the ep three times and I still feel very emotional when LittleCato says “I would have gone.... crazy....”. The music and the pacing for that seen is perfect. Olan if you read this, good job man.
I love the idea that out of everyone on the ship, Gary might be the one who can relate to lil cato’s loneliness the most and how heavy a toll it can have on you. You can see it in the way he says “Loneliness is the worst, man.” It kinda just reminds you that Gary’s isolation/prison time did in fact happen, and being alone for as long they have can fuck with you so bad, be it five or sixty years. Lmao idk I just liked that little moment, because it can lead into them both being there for each other and maybe just getting to talk about it.
Honestly, this was a wonderful episode. Probably my favorite to date. I know I'm late to the discussion (thanks work) but this brought me to tears. It was so special. And it hit me very hard. Last episode was very good but this topped it and even much of last season (which is hard to say for me because the first two eps of the second season hadn't left the same impression as season one as a whole). I loved loved loved this episode. It punched me so hard and I was so glad to have Avocato back, even more so given the content of how we got to have him back. So crushing to hear Little Cato put such words into his father's mouth.
Loved it. Can't stress how much love and thought went into this episode as a whole.
Just wow.
Finnaly it's Final Space.
Is no one going to talk about how old Tribore is looking like a cross-over between Steven Seagal and Yondu?
