About TMPU

Overview

Our university was founded in 1939 by Dr. TAKAYANAGI Giichi (and private-sector sympathizers) as the Tohoku School of Pharmacy which was the only pharmaceutical educational institution in the Tohoku region and Hokkaido. And the school was reorganized as Tohoku Pharmaceutical University in 1949. We are proud of our history, enabling to revive an abolished public pharmaceutical education, supported from the private-sector, with firm educational philosophy.
At the time of its founding, the school aspired to the pursuit of truth with hopes of contributing to the health and welfare of mankind through pharmaceutical education and research, by training pharmacists capable of contributing to the local community. This spirit was condensed into the words of the university's founder, Dr. TAKAYANAGI Giichi, ""The Pursuit of Truth."" Our founder’s spirit, inscribed on a monument as the founding spirit of the university (monument of Kaishin), has been handed down to today.
Celebrating our 80th anniversary in May 2019, we now have more than 23,000 alumni of the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, actively working as pharmacists, educators, researchers, and administrators all over Japan. In recent years, the improvement of the quality of pharmacists has been required due to the progress of the separation of dispensing and prescribing functions (SDP), and pharmaceut ical research is becoming more and more multidisciplinary. For these reasons, our university has established both a six-year ""Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences"" and a four-year ""Depar tment of Pharmaceut ical Li fe Sciences."" Furthermore, our university opened an affiliated hospital (Tohoku Pharmaceutical University Hospital, renamed Tohoku Medical and Pharmaceutical University Hospital) in April 2013, as a first of pharmaceutical college.
The Great East Japan Earthquake (magnitude 9.0) on March 11, 2011 caused a collapse of medical service in huge areas along the pacific coast of the affected Tohoku region.
On April 1, 2016, our university newly established the Faculty of Medicine, as the countermeasure from the af termath of the disaster, preparing for the coming super-aging society, a shortage of physicians in the Tohoku region, and recovery from the nuclear accidents. Our Medical Faculty has a strong mission of training physicians who have extensive medical skills. We have reorganized as the Tohoku Medical and Pharmaceutical University with a renewed mission of supporting medicine in the Tohoku region.
