The key to Plant City is its location since you’re just 20 minutes from Tampa, 40 minutes from Lakeland and 45 minutes from Orlando. “Our central aspect is key, but we’re still technically considered a small town so we don’t have Disney traffic issues like some other areas,” says Angie Inzerillo, a local broker with Blue Sun Realty. “We’ve got agricultural roots, a neighborhood sprawl and a Main Street downtown area too.”

Since Plant City is such a large area, you have a lot of different home options to choose from. “The downtown area has some historic hundred-year-old homes. Then you’ve got golf community neighborhoods like Walden Lake, which was one of the first master-planned communities around here,” Inzerillo says. “And there are typically bigger lots than what you see now with these newer neighborhoods. You can have one or two-acre properties that are more country-style. It’s a mixture, but there aren’t too many million-dollar homes.” You’ll find ranch-style homes, custom-built brick pool homes, old southern homes on five-acre estates and more, with a median listing price of about $330,000.

“The schools around here are pretty good,” Inzerillo says. “That’s another big piece that draws people in. Especially for kids who play sports. We’ve got three high schools here that have all gone to states. They always end up at all the playoffs.” Plant City High School, for example, is part of the Hillsborough County Public School system and was originally built in 1914. You’ll also find Hillsborough Community College’s Plant City Campus. Founded in 1968, it’s one of the last community colleges built in the state. It’s also one of the few community colleges with a residence hall.

If you’re looking to stretch your legs, check out the 77-acre Mike E. Sansone Community Park. The park is named after a local barber who fought in WWI and WWII and was heavily involved in the community. Park amenities include baseball fields, concession stands, picnic shelters, basketball courts, sand volleyball courts, a skate park and a paved nature trail.

Grocery options include Publix, Walmart and Aldi, but restaurant options can be sparse. “There’s a real need and lack of restaurants and shopping, so most people jump on the interstate and go to Tampa. You can be there in 15-20 minutes,” Inzerillo says. “Wasabi Steakhouse & Sushi Bar is really popular here though, and Keel Farms has gotten super popular lately too. They’re known for their blueberry wine and the events they host. Other than that there’s mostly your normal chain stuff like Chili’s and Outback.” Keel Farms first opened in 1981 when a Tampa landscaper decided to start a 10-acre nursery that focused on blueberries. Later they gave winemaking a try and expanded to 35 acres. Their Keel Farms Blueberry Festival draws a big crowd with vendors, a petting zoo, bounce houses and more.

Plant City has plenty of other local events to enjoy, like Food Truck Fridays in the downtown area on the last Friday of every month. Dancing with the Locals is a popular fundraising event. “The local Strawberry Festival is a huge deal. It ranks with the top 50 festivals in the country,” Inzerillo says. “And we’ve got an annual Christmas parade too. There’s just such a strong sense of community here.”

Plant city is a small, sweet town. We are a farming community growing, plucking and selling delicious strawberries by the bundle. Plant city is also home to the spectacular annual strawberry festival every year people come from all over the nation to see artists and singers play on the stage and try different strawberry themed foods and desserts and ride exciting rides and win prizes.

My of the people are self-centered and rude, not to mention subtly racist, but I could not give it too bad of a rating because I am seeing slight improvement in the city.

Plant City is a quiet place outside of major cities. Is is a smaller farming community with a family feel.
