Katie Lyons, a former two-sport athlete at Buffalo State, has been hired as a volunteer assistant coach for the women’s lacrosse team.

Lyons joins the staff after having coached with the Buffalo Wings from 2007-2012 and served as the Club Director in 2011 and 2012.  Most recently, she has been coaching with the Buffalo Lacrosse Academy and has been involved with lacrosse, either as a player or coach, for the past 13 years.

During her lacrosse career as a Bengal, Lyons was a four-time Buffalo State Scholar Athlete (2005-08) and was twice named to the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) All Conference Second Team.  She was also named to the SUNYAC All-Academic and Commissioner’s List and was an NCAA Woman of the Year nominee in 2008.  In 70 games, she accumulated 102 points, on 67 goals and 35 assists, and is currently ranked 11th among the all-time scoring leaders.  In addition to lacrosse, she was also a four-year member of the women’s soccer team.

In addition to coaching, she is employed by the United Way of Buffalo & Erie County as Program Director of Income Initiatives and has served as an adjunct in the Social Work Department at Buffalo State.

Lyons completed her bachelor’s degree in social work from Buffalo State in 2008 and received her master’s degree from the University at Buffalo in 2009. A graduate of Williamsville North, she currently resides in Tonawanda and is engaged to Mark O’Connor, with a wedding planned for Summer 2014.
