Natural Born Killers
One of my favorite films and one that turns 30 this year. Hard to believe. It's not for everyone due to it's extreme graphic (if quite over the top) violence and frenetic filming style, but I find it's a brilliant satire that rings more true than ever these days with it's commentary and ultimately condemnation on the media's irresponsible habit of glorifying murderers and making them into celebrities. It was something timely and relevant even at the time it was made thanks to tabloid journalism, and it eerily feels moreso now thanks to social media and how anyone can be a celebrity and have a following no matter what a terrible person they are. It's got a stellar cast who all put in excellent performances, with the standouts being Woody Harrelson as the deadly yet charismatic Mickey Knox, Juliette Lewis as his equally dangerous lover Mallory, a pre-Iron Man Robert Downey, Jr. as sleazy and fame-obsessed tabloid journalist Wayne Gale, a scene-chewing Tommy Lee Jones as the angry and profane prison warden and the late, great Tom Sizemore as crooked cop Jack Scagnetti.
The film isn't everyone's cup of tea, but I find it to be an excellent satire and having a message that feels far more relevant than ever before. A film that was both of it's time and ahead of it.
The soundtrack for that film was produced by Trent Reznor, and it is killer.
Forgot all about the amazing soundtrack. Fit so perfectly with the movie.
Trent Reznor has turned out to be phenomenal at creating soundtracks. I love his work.
My favorite part was Juliette Lewis beating the crap out of the douche bag in the diner, as L7’s ‘Shit List’ played in the background.
😍
Her scenes with Rodney are unbelievable.
Beep beep
And also ”Worst head of my life!”
One of my favorites. Certainly in my top five of the ‘90’s. My first viewing was the director’s cut on VHS that I rented when it first came, and it blew my mind. I was 13 years old.
It’s maybe one of only two or three masterpieces where I completely understand how one could despise everything about it. The film reflected a grotesque era of American tabloid culture gone awry as a rapid fire acid trip satire. To hate what was seen was its point, but Stone is adept at plugging us into the warped minds of its young killers while still having enough distance for critical clarity. In the decade of irony, the only people who are capable of love in this quintessential 90’s movie are the serial killers.
Natural Born Killers is a brilliant movie.
I love this movie. It’s the only time lovable Rodney Dangerfield absolutely freaked me out.
I had no idea he had any kinda of dramatic acting chops. Only knew him from caddy shack and back to school 😂 Who knew Thornton Melon could be scary 😳😳😳
Based on an original screenplay by Tarantino, but heavily revised.
My favorite Oliver Stone film, by a long shot.
Botanga botanga in botangavilleeee, what a soundtrack this great satire has
"I don't care what your fucking name is!!!" Tommy Lee Jones is so awesome in this film.
Impossible for me to think about NBK without thinking of how brilliantly slimy Downey Jr was as Wayne Gale channeling the Geraldo/manson interview. Also peak ‘90s actors in the supporting parts esp Sizemore & Tommy Lee Jones
I loved it when it first came out. I hadn't seen it for probably 25 years and last year it came to one of my streaming services, and I watched it again. Just as magical as it was, even more so since I'm a bit more observant in my old age.
I saw this in the theater with my then girlfriend and we left puzzled. I mean we liked it ok, but I don’t think we were clued in on the sensationalism of the media on serial killers it was portraying. I think we thought it was going to be more like an angrier version of ‘Falling Down.’
Loved it. Used to have the VHS tape and watched it blazed so many times. Juliette Lewis’ rendition of Sweet Jane is the best one imho
