An Inspector Maigret murder mystery which is all I needed to know to watch it. Filmed during WWII while France was occupied by Germany. Always a tricky proposition but Maigret was as safe as you could get. Not a German to be seen. The production company was Continental Films, which was the only authorized film company during the Occupation and controlled by Germany. The film is based on a 1942 novel of the same name by Georges Simenon who had his own murky relationship with the Germans and after the war was accused of being a collaborator. He quickly left for the USA and lived there for ten years before he returned to France.

Seeing a poll taking place for the best movies of 1944,I decided to view every French film from the year,that is currently available with English Subtitles. Having found Julien Duvivier’s take on the character in A Man's Head (1933-also reviewed) to be superb,and the trio of titles I’ve seen by the film maker to be thrilling,I got set to once again meet Maigret.

Another Maigret mystery from Continental Films during the War, with Albert Prejean back as the famed detective, seeking the murderer of… well, you can probably guess. One of the last films directed by the great Maurice Tourneur. Solidly entertaining, in many ways due to the quirky cast of characters Maigret is surrounded with. Nearly everyone is an oddball of some sort, and the resulting comedy/charm keeps you from getting too lost in the dense murder plot.
A woman named Cecile (Santa Relli) comes to see Inspector Maigret (Albert Préjean) so frequently that his co-workers make fun and joke she's his girlfriend. She claims there is something odd going on at the apartment she shares with her aunt. Maigret thinks she's imagining things and treats her as a nuisance. A sequence of events that includes a murdered woman sans head begins to tie in with Cecile's aunt and then Cecile turns up dead.
Directed by Maurice Tourneur. Not bad, but not particularly distinguished either. I was hoping for more given the director. As far as Maigrets go, I favor Jean Gabin in his two 50s outings over Albert Préjean.
Very well made Inspector Maigret movie. Surprised there was not a dozen more of these considering how many novels Simenon wrote.

An awfully convoluted multiple murder mystery (including a decapitation) that’s ultimately entertaining.
A pleasant Maigret mystery. Most Maigret mysteries are like this, regardless of being British productions, or like this, French productions. Just a little investigation to pass he time.
