Cracking good British guitar pop. James, at one time the darlings of the British "new wave," give SHE'S A STAR a shimmer that aches ever-so-slightly. Andrew Weatherall gives "Come Home" a dubby mix that takes an shrill melody and bends and reverbs it, throwing in some guitar stabs and whiplashes, but the vocals sound out-of-tune. Not really his best work. On the other hand, Dave Angel rubs "She's a Star" with a tech-break lilt that makes the stargazing apparent. But my favorite is the Biosphere mix, which takes the vocals and transposes them into an minimal, ambient dream -- which fits them to a tee, I might add. As the track starts, "Whenever she's feeling empty..." you're plunged into an arctic atmosphere. The random keystroke courtesy of Jenssen's infant daughter sound almost integral. Cold and gorgeous.
