This is the first set of short stories, from the author. There is a second set out now, and unfortunately I read them in the wrong order. There's a definite growth between the two sets, which does cast this in a slightly lesser light.
That’s not to say that this is a bad collection. There are some really strong stories in here, however there are also some not quite so good ones. There are a few that seem like writing exercises, and those tend to be the weaker ones. Saying that, one of my least favourite ones, about what would happen if everyone’s knees reversed seems to be a popular story so what do I know.
The stronger ones in my eyes are the slice of life stories. And it's noticeable that some of the characters do move into the next collection as well.
Short story writing is an art in and of itself, and this is an artist at work

This is not the type of book I normally read, in fact, I rarely read fiction. But, Chris has such a way with words that one minute I was laughing out, the next I was gasping in horror. You really do experience a range of emotions within just a few pages. He also manages to create convincing protagonists and characters in a variety of age groups and economic classes. It's so good that I lent it to a few family members (with a warning about the course language so they didn't get a shock). 10/10 would recommend.

With the books that I tend to read it is rare that I will be spilling my guts with laughter but this was exactly what I experienced reading Hings! As it is short stories it is so easy to dip in and out of, reading one or two at a time. I also fell into the trap of "just one more story then I'll do X" and then before I knew it was half way through the book. It really is that good!

This wasn't what I expected to be honest, had heard a lot about it and have been reading Ryan Bracha and Mark Wilsons stuff so was looking forward to it, even going back to Irvine Welsh have liked the independent stuff but while there was some really good stuff in here " Korma Police" "Scudbook", " Tourists" is wonderfully surreal there was some pish, the Budgie, Sammy's Bag as an example, that said there's more good than bad and some real gems, as I said I was expecting more hence the 3 star but there's real potential and would defo read more, if you gonna read anybook of this type, read Mark Wilsons " On the 7th Day" but Hings is a pretty impressive read, would be 3.5 actually

Good book as expected and actually gets five stars. The spelling of the Glaswegian vocabulary conveys both the Glaswegian accent and the unique sentiments the words express. Lovely read. However: the amazon warehouse insists on stuffing merchandise into its bespoke packaging resulting (in this case) a dog-eared cover. With just a little consideration, amazon could, if it wished, improve its service enormously. Looking forward to the end of the pandemic and the concomitant re-opening of bookshops.
