Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Saturday he was confident of his return to power after voting ended in the country's six-week election, a marathon contest bedevilled by successive punishing heatwaves.Modi himself was certain that he had, saying he was confident that "the people of India have voted in record numbers" to re-elect his government.
Safety and quality problems exposed at Boeing following a door plug blowout earlier this year risk shaking travellers' confidence in flying, a top executive at rival Airbus said. Christian Scherer, CEO of Airbus' Commercial Aircraft business, told German weekly magazine WirtschaftsWoche that the issues were "a burden for the entire industry". "Boeing's problems could cause more people to question how safe flying actually is," Scherer was quoted as saying.
It was predicted to go badly but turned out to be worse: South African President Cyril Ramaphosa led the ANC to its worst election result since the end of apartheid, one which threatens his survival. It will have to forge alliances to re-elect Ramaphosa at the end of the month and stay in power, with its hand forced into possible concessions with minnows it failed to beat in the election.
