‘NOT SINCE YOU’: IT’S A REUNION ENSEMBLE ROMANCE DONE RIGHT

Some Indie films, like anything, can be really good and others can be something of a dud. In order to discover which camp the movie falls into, first you have to take the time to watch the 90 minute film. not since you

Not Since You (2009) Film Review

Weddings are a time of celebration. But for a group of seven college friends, it also means reunions, some of which aren’t so happy. Amy (Kathleen Robertson) is excited to be at one of her best college friend’s wedding and even more so to reunite with her best friends Victoria (Sunny Mabry) and Sarah (Sara Rue). Along with the girl’s, Victoria’s boyfriend Billy (Will Estes) and their mutual friend, Joey (Elden Henson) or “Fudge,” is also included in the wedding. The one face Billy is nervous to see is Howard (Jon Abrahams), his friend who refuses to speak to him and still blames him for stealing Victoria. New to their group if Amy’s husband of seven years, Ryan (Christian Kane).

The one face Amy doesn’t want to see is Sam (Desmond Harrington).

Following a four year relationship, Sam left Amy behind to travel the world. Now all of these years later he’s back and in for the surprise of his life when he learns Amy is married.

This is one of those films that I ignored despite the many times its card appeared while browsing streaming services. Recently I watched the trailer, saw that Will Estes and Christian Kane were two of its stars, and finally I simply had to watch Not Since You. Estes and Kane are, of course, from two of my favorite shows which are Blue Bloods (CBS) and Leverage (TNT). To say watching this is a good experience is an understatement. While the film does suffer in some production quality (background noise), overall it’s a good one.

This is the kind of ensemble reunion like rom-coms every movie should strive for. Much as I enjoy films like He’s Just Not that Into You, they rarely, if ever, have any kind of moral underpinning. This film does. Its characters are imperfect but they have values and do what’s right without letting ego play in. Or at least most of them do. I appreciate how the love triangle wraps up and the new romance is really sweet but also surprisingly emotional. The only character flaw I take issue with is Amy. I want to be a little more certain that she actually means the sweet speech she gives after making a decision. But I think this is due to how Robertson plays the character.

Not Since You is full of happiness and also some gut worthy emotion. The latter isn’t overpowering, but the film does deal in some heavier things. All of which it does very well. Like I said, this one does the ensemble romance very well, and for the most part, it’s quite good. It’s also a film I could certainly see myself re-watching, which is saying something.

Content: There’s some sexual innuendo. A women admits to being a virgin (she says she waiting for marriage but wouldn’t be opposed if the right guy comes along); later she almost has sex, but doesn’t then. Another  man has a drinking problem. There’s some profanity and other crude comments.
