Underrated (adjective): /ˌəndəˈrādəd/ - Not rated or valued highly enough. Used to describe a piece of artistic expression that wasn't critically well-received but that a person believes deserves higher praise. It does not mean that a movie isn't well-known.

Captive State (2019)

I saw this in the theater in 2019 and remember leaving the theater feeling…. Underwhelmed. Things didn’t make sense, and the interactions seemed random. I decided I disliked it and wrote it off as weird nonsense.

I was disappointed in it.

Then, I thought about it for a few days.

The more I thought, the more things fell into place. And I went and saw it again in the theater.

It immediately rocketed into one of my favorites.

The acting is great. John Goodman excels here. All the supporting cast fit perfectly. The set design is, well, beautiful is not the word, but- purposefully bleak.

The plot and setup all flow together in unexpected ways and although the story is slow, it rewards a second viewing with a new perspective.

Let me know what you think.
