Charis Michelsen: A Rising Star in the Fashion Industry

The 10 Most Empowering Women CEOs Making a Difference, 2022

Charis Michelsen has made a name for herself in the beauty and entertainment industries thanks to her distinctive looks in front of the camera as a model, her unforgettable performances as an actor in award-winning films like Wonder Boys, High Art, and Martin Scorsese’s Bringing Out the Dead, as well as her work as a celebrity makeup artist, beauty educator, and an international spokeswoman. Her books, Hollywood Beauty: The Art of Star Makeup and Grooming for Men: Dirty to Polished, which offer delicious tips on how to look like a celebrity, have a cult following. She was also recently offered a part in an important new film with a well-known figure in the entertainment world.

Starting From Scratch

Charis was discovered as a model by a photographer for Harper’s BAZAAR magazine two weeks after she moved to New York City from a small town in Oregon at the age of eighteen to study art and fashion design at the world’s most renowned design school, Parsons School of Design/The New School. This is how her professional modeling career got started. She had the good fortune to serve as a model for prestigious companies and publications, including Tommy Hilfiger, Pepsi, Conair, Levis, Dell, Hasbro, and Psychology Today. She has also appeared in music videos alongside actors like Liv Tyler and bands like Type O Negative.

Charis started her professional acting career after switching from modeling to acting after being offered a supporting part in the first film she auditioned for. Her first film’s producers quickly offered her the lead role in their follow-up, which led to her landing parts in critically acclaimed films like High Art, Wonder Boys, and Bringing Out the Dead. She also got to work with A-list talent like director Martin Scorsese, actors Nicolas Cage, Michael Douglas, Katie Holmes, Tobey Maguire, and Robert Downey Jr., as well as the best hair and makeup designers. Charis shares, “I was always inspired by the brilliant work created by makeup artists and stylists on-set and paralleled it to fine art, as many of the same principles apply.”

For fun, Charis obtained her accreditation as a makeup artist and received an invitation to work as a spokeswoman for a corporation with a $20 billion annual income, traveling domestically and internationally to represent one of the top five high-end cosmetic brands in the world. She learned from this experience that there was a real need to inform people about how to use cosmetics to enhance their physical appeal. She asserts, “The number one question I would be asked was, “How do I look my best?”. Everyone wants to know how to go from looking “plain, like a star without makeup” to “a star on the red carpet”.” So, Charis set out to create a foolproof scientific system that could give each person this experience, as well as answers to tough beauty-related questions that didn’t have answers — and she succeeded. From her discoveries, she created the Universal Beauty Standard System™, as well as some original makeup application techniques. “When a dear friend pointed out that I should put my beauty findings in a book to reach more people, I did and entitled it, Hollywood Beauty: The Art of Star Makeup,” says Charis.

Charis produced a second book, particularly for men, called Grooming for Men: Dirty to Polished, since men are interested in learning how to look their best as well. On her website, charismichelsen.com, you can view the volumes, which are self-illustrated and designed to be coffee table books that may be displayed. They completely fill the industry’s knowledge gap with in-depth education for both sexes to give beauty newbies and professionals an unmatched skill set for physical enhancement. They also include original user-friendly beauty techniques, a beauty education covering every stage of life, and thorough individualized prescriptive solutions, so everyone can choose and use products to their advantage to maximize their own physical appeal. Thom Mount, a former president of Universal Pictures and the creator of films like Natural Born Killers, Bull Durham, and Tequila Sunrise, kindly stated in a letter that Charis’ books “have meaning and value in society, and will stand alongside the work of other authors who understand their subjects at an extraordinary cellular level; think Julia Child’s [Mastering] The Art of French Cooking.” Although her books are not yet for sale, they will be soon.

The Artificial Intelligence (AI) Stylist that Charis developed connects a person with their perfect outfit, shoes, accessories, and cosmetics and styles them using her Universal Beauty Standard SystemTM, which she adapted to fashion and cosmetic products. The Stylist provides advice on what to wear for everyone without imposing a subjective perspective. Everything purchased through the Stylist should fit a specific person, it will also put an end to buyer’s regret and decrease returns for clothing and cosmetics retailers to boost their revenues. She also created a glossy half-hour documentary-style TV show called Fashion Style Beauty, which she hosts. The show explores the fascinating and entertaining world of fashion, style, and beauty. Think of it as an elegantly sexy Anthony Bourdain’s Parts Unknown, but with a focus on fashion, style, and beauty instead of food and travel, and with added educational content.

Charis has also designed and patented a diamond-dot pattern that’s expressed in twenty colors and contains a unique color technology that makes each color act as a neutral, allowing each color to be more compatible with various outfits, and has created designs employing conscious fabrics for use with it. She says, “I’m currently working on launching a line of fashion and beauty products.” She further adds that the Stylist, along with other unique features, such as reliable, educational fashion, style, and beauty content, and curated information and news that could inspire the purchase of fashion and cosmetic products, will be housed on an online platform, Fashion Style Beauty Network.

Fashion Style Beauty

With Charis’ AI Stylist, vendors’ products will be targeted to the customers they’re most appropriate for, and users will be able to browse and buy fashion and cosmetic items via their Stylist account on the Fashion Style Beauty Network platform, similar to how one shops on eBay, that are ideal for them. Fashion Style Beauty Network is a multifaceted online shopping network for both men and women that, like Amazon, allows vendors to sell fashion and cosmetic products to consumers. She claims that the Stylist may also dress a person using clothing and accessories they may already own or buy via the Fashion Style Beauty Network portal. The Fashion Style Beauty Network offers three features.

1.) Fashion, style, and beauty content, endowed with Charis’ expertise, to entertain consumers and educate them on how to choose and use cosmetic and fashion products and services for the best-individualized results.

2.) Curated information and news that could inspire the purchase of fashion and cosmetic products.

3.) Revolutionary self-service Artificial Intelligence (AI) personal shopper technology, founded on Charis’ science-based Universal Beauty Standard System™, that provides ideal individualized products, services, and styling suggestions.

All features offer real-time links that connect users to the Fashion Style Beauty Network platform’s other features, so they can conveniently purchase beauty and fashion products and services at peak interest times, and connect beauty and fashion vendors to their ideal target market.

Charis’ hopes for Fashion Style Beauty Network to be the online hub for all things fashion and beauty.

Creating Change through Vision and Progress

After working as a spokesman and consultant for a corporation with a twenty-billion-dollar annual revenue, Charis was nominated to be the CEO of a skincare line and, later, a color cosmetics line. During her time as CEO, she researched business methods. After that, Charis created an AI personal stylist that can style a person more effectively than a celebrity stylist. She hopes that her AI Stylist will improve lives by helping customers make the most of their wardrobes, which can boost their confidence by ensuring they always look their best and eliminate buyer’s remorse because everything they buy through the stylist should fit them perfectly. Fashion Style Beauty Network was born out of her desire to provide everyone with cutting-edge tools to help them look and feel their best, such as her AI Stylist and knowledge from her books, which will be made available via pop-ups on the platform where appropriate, in a way that’s convenient, time-efficient, and effective. She also wanted to create a high-performing business model.

Charis wants both buyers and suppliers to benefit from the Fashion Style Beauty Network platform. She hopes that Fashion Style Beauty Network will become the Amazon of personal shopping for apparel and cosmetics, helping to expand the businesses of apparel and cosmetics suppliers while lowering product returns and boosting suppliers’ earnings.

Recognition Received as a Professional

Charis’ work has given her great opportunities and many blessings, such as being named the new face of the industry by Vigour Magazine, Roidx Magazine, and L’amour Magazine, qualified as a “beauty and fashion icon” by Edith Mode Magazine and Pump Magazine, the “Martha Stewart of makeup” by Entrepreneurs Herald Magazine, a “beauty & fashion superstar” by Dolce Magazine, and a “Rising Star” by VoyageLA Magazine. She has also been deemed one of the “Top 30 Most Inspiring Women to Look out for in 2022” by Disruptor’s Magazine, “One of the Top 30 Personalities Disrupting the Fashion Industry in 2022,” by The NYC Journal, “One of the 10 Most Empowering Women to Watch Out for in 2022” and “Leader of the Year” by Tycoon Success Magazine, ranked number five out of the world’s top makeup artists, and last but definitely not least named one of “The 10 Most Empowering Women CEOs Making a Difference, 2022” by Success Pitchers Magazine.

Charis also feels extremely appreciative that she was named a Parsons School of Design notable alumnus amongst such talents as Tom Ford, Marc Jacobs, Isaac Mizrahi, Anna Sui, Donna Karan, Derek Lam, Alexander Wang, Zac Posen, Prabal Gurung, Narciso Rodriguez, Peter Som, and Jason Wu, and that The New School included her in their list of legends.

Advice to Emerging Leaders

“If anyone says you’ll never reach your goals, ignore them, and keep moving forward,” says Charis. Charis overheard that MIT made an attempt to develop an AI personal stylist but failed. It seemed impossible to create an AI personal stylist, yet she succeeded because she persisted. Because she chose not to pay attention to those who didn’t believe in her, she also developed the first science-based Universal Beauty StandardTM and wrote the world’s most complete beauty books ever, which feature original procedures she invented. She’s also inspired others to follow in her footsteps. She suggests having a motivating theme tune that you can play whenever you need encouragement. Charis has two of them: Empire State of Mind by Alicia Keys with Jay-Z and Eye of the Tiger by Survivor.

View for Future

Charis hopes that Fashion Style Beauty Network will serve as a catalyst for a significant improvement in the buying and selling of clothing and cosmetics. She anticipates that Fashion Style Beauty Network will spare customers the trouble of having to shop elsewhere and the expense of buying things that might not improve their physical attractiveness. She is interested in how her AI Stylist will improve lives by maximizing a customer’s wardrobe to boost their self-confidence by ensuring they always look their best and supporting the growth of fashion and beauty vendors’ businesses.
