This was an incredible expletive that I will never forget. It was a real African experience. The family welcome you with open arms into their community and give you an unforgettable experience. I saw a fortune teller, learnt how to make Kuli kuli, saw how they wash the babies there and was shown a celebration/ ceremony at the school.
The mud hut was really nice to stay in and there was a fan, mosquito net and plug. Conditions are basic but that only adds to the experience. I definitely recommend!

Where to begin!? The baskets and crafts are made locally by women of which the shop attendants, Walisu and Sayaw, will be happy to tell you about! There is a variety of sizes, patterns, and shapes of baskets as well as an array of beautifully patterned hand bags. This shop truly pleases tourists as it is in a quiet area of Tamale, boasts a welcome atmosphere, and catches your eye with its beautiful displays of artisanal gifts and souvenirs. A must-visit while in Tamale!

This trip wasn't just a vacation for me. It was personal. I have always found joy in learning about my heritage from both sides of my family and it gives me a sense of pride. My mom is from Ghana so I was introduced to bits and pieces of the culture starting at birth, but nothing compares to visiting and experiencing the motherland firsthand. I had been looking forward to this trip for years, and the team at Uprise Travel did not disappoint. Naa was wonderful with helping set up the tour, tailoring the itinerary to fit our needs, and all communication throughout the process. Our guide Emmanuel was amazing. He was so knowledgeable about everything and I could tell that this is not just a job to him. It is a passion. He takes great pride and joy in sharing the history, the culture, the customs with others. He went the extra mile to make sure everyone on the trip was comfortable, bringing along medications that may be needed, placing us with specific guides at each location... guides that he felt would add a personal touch and share the information best. I definitely felt like every guide we had along the tour was just as invested as Emmanuel was and it felt genuine. The information shared was extensive to the point I video taped and took notes on my phone because I want to refer back to it later. Francis was great as well. He was a good support for Emmanuel and made sure everything behind the scenes was taken care of. If personal errands needed to be ran, he made it happen. He was also the resident photographer/ videographer. While the group was enjoying, he was capturing every moment and each night those photos and videos were shared to the group chat for us to enjoy. Memories are priceless and I have a plethora of photos to look back on thanks to him. Our bus driver Dennis and his assistant Cedric are TOP TIER. If Dennis cannot drive down a road, then I promise you that road simply cannot be driven... because he can handle ANY terrain. I was amazed at the way he handled that bus like it might have been a small car. The entire group was raving about his abilities and we trusted him. Traffic lights, stop signs, etc are only present in the capital of Ghana. Once you leave the city everyone follows unwritten "rules of the road" and traffic flows naturally. However, maneuvering a large tour bus presents greater difficulty so the driver's assistant Cedric cannot be left out. He was the eyes and ears when visibility was limited, telling the driver when it was safe to go, if he had enough space to turn. There were even times that he went outside the bus directing and making sure we could pass through. Overall I would say we had the best team any group could ask for and when I come to Ghana again I plan to request this group again. They work well together and everything went like clockwork. I am so grateful to have been able to make this trip. I learned about my mother's homeland and culture. I feel more connected to my roots, and I have a joy that cannot be put into words. My heart is so full. Thank you all.

Isaac at Grassroot Tours was referred by a friend. Immediately after sending him a WhatsApp message and email, he replied and was always prompt in his replies throughout our three days together. Booking was simple and payment by credit card was easy enough. Isaac and the van driver picked us up on Friday morning and dropped us back on Sunday afternoon at Tamale Airport - clean and well maintained van, good A/C and smooth ride. Isaac answered all of our questions and shared so much about the culture and what we were seeing along the roadside in both directions. It felt like an excursion all by itself. Once we arrived at Zaina lodge he was quick to unload us and our luggage. He knew the hotel staff and communicated with them before leaving us for the evening. He picked us up again on Saturday morning for our canoe safari and shea butter processing tour. He was so attentive and well connected with all of the locals. I felt we were always in good hands and we thoroughly enjoyed both tours. On Sunday at noon he again picked us to return to the airport. He was early for each of the pickups and communicated regularly. That gave me a great sense of comfort. Our ride back was just as comfortable as our pickup. We stopped in Tamale to pick up lunch at KFC's and of course purchased a lunch for Isaac and our driver. Then on to the airport. Isaac was extremely knowledgeable and a wonderfully kind man. I would not hesitate to call on him in the future for another tour or refer him to others. I HIGHLY recommend Grassroot Tours. You will not be disappointed in their service.
