Sometimes Good, Sometimes Hard.
Indeed Featured review
The most useful review selected by IndeedIt's good and had a lot of experience with our seniors. You just need to know the routine and everything will be okay. However, the pay isn't worth it.

It is a fulfilling workplace ruined by corporate culture.
Maintenance Manager (Current Employee) - Ontario - February 14, 2024
What is the best part of working at the company? Being able to help elderly people on a daily basis. What is the most stressful part about working at the company? Micromanagement when it is not needed nor necessary. What is the work environment and culture like at the company? Some days it feels inclusive, but mostly feels like a dictatorship. What is a typical day like for you at the company? Stressful and overwhelming with minimal compensation.

Underpaid
Receptionist and Activities (Former Employee) - Ontario - January 13, 2024
Staff are all way too underpaid. It’s nice being around the residents and helping them and spending time with them but everyone is severely underpaid and the rules don’t apply to everyone because management plays favourites.

Fun place to work
RCA (Current Employee) - Crescent Garden - September 22, 2023
My manager is very pleasant and easy to talk to. She is always on top of things and is ready to fix any problem that arises. I also have a wonderful team that I work with, I never feel burden nor do I ever feel overwhelmed with work.
Pros
Good care team
Cons
Some shifts are too short

They do not pay enough to attract decent HR so toxic outdated cancel culture
Staff Nurse (Former Employee) - Ontario - March 24, 2023
Very poor management, lacks maturity and experience in leadership . Toxic - environment getting government funding for new Fixing LTC act but no idea how to fix or execute change. This level of expertise is beyond the home level and the incompetence travels up the ladder. Any registered /non registered staff are paid at least $ 2/hr less than anywhere in Ontario so this also attract people that have issues getting jobs elsewhere ie: previously lost jobs, no longer qualified for the title they carry.
Pros
none
Cons
Bullies, ignorance reins over education, toxic in all levels.

Out of touch with staff and residents.
Personal Support Worker (Current Employee) - Ontario - December 31, 2022
Company can't give 2 hoots about front line staff. No proper training given to frontline and management. 3 out of 5 days we are running like chickens without head. There is always an issue with pay cheques. Everything has to be "Chartwell way" Their staffing optimization is so out of touch with reality. They need more people to work and their solutions is to give less shifts to employees to boost staffing levels Well they hired more people but will only give 8 hours shift biweekly... They pay minimum wage for housekeeping and very close to minimum wage for PSWs
Pros
Residents
Cons
Low wage, no shifts, toxic work culture.

No Support and False Promises
Registered Practical Nurse (Current Employee) - Ontario - November 30, 2022
The best part of my job is my incredible coworkers and the residents. But you’re so busy you’ll never get to spend enough time with individual residents to give them the care they deserve. I go home and all I can do is sleep because I’m so mentally and physically exhausted, even on my days off. The pay isn’t enough for me to get by. I would work more, but my mental health can’t handle it. The company and management will say that they’re there for you and will support you but most of them just say that because they don’t want us to quit and couldn’t care less about our mental health. There used to be some good managers but they all left because upper management doesn’t listen to their concerns or support them.
Pros
Coworkers, residents
Cons
Stress, burnout, pay, lack of support, won’t pay if you stay late

Good for Part time work.
Housekeeping (Former Employee) - Ontario - February 28, 2022
It is good if you only want part time work. The co-workers are nice. Seniority prevents any advancement. The company won’t pay benefits so only part time work offered. This is a good company which could do much more for their staff
Pros
Nice people to work with
Cons
No advancement. No benefits. not enough shifts to earn a living wage

Fast-paced but collaborative and supportive work environment
Server (Former Employee) - Colonel Belcher - February 6, 2022
During the training period you learn all you need to know but even after training is finished other employees are always willing to answer questions and help you along. The environment is collaborative although fast-paced.

Enjoyed getting to know residents, making their day brighter.
Recreation Aide (Former Employee) - Ontario - January 4, 2022
Fun to get to engage in activities with the residents, including planning, preparing, setting up. Can be challenging to effectively engage with some residents (various reasons; levels of physical/ cognitive functioning, willingness to participate, motivation), but good to develop skills in problem solving and creative thinking!

You have to be passionate for the job to be worth it
Housekeeper (Current Employee) - Ontario - November 13, 2021
Doesn't pay enough to survive, second job required. Lots of responsibility and time management required. Managers and some other employees are overworked. Amazing coworkers and residents are lovely to be around.
Pros
The residents
Cons
Very low pay

Chartwell only cares about making money. Not their residents or the people that take care of them.
Nurse (Former Employee) - Ontario, CA - September 22, 2021
Kind people work for Chartwell. People who commit themselves to the residents and give more than their 'all'. Sadly, this company will bleed you dry and not bat an eye when they've burnt you out mentally and physically. They pay their psws (which they call guest attendants but require them to do MORE than any psw does) as little as they can..ie: minimum wage to care for, bathe, toilet, administer medications to residents and clean toilets and deliver meals (yes all in the same shift) The HR support is nonexistent. You must go thru your manager or the GM even if the concern is about them. Nothing is properly addressed. Sadly the people who take care of the people who are making the CEOs money are treated very poorly.
Pros
A free meal. Kind co-workers.
Cons
Horrible pay; Dishonest management; No support; Will bleed you dry.

Cook (Former Employee) - Newmarket, NH - September 23, 2020
Great overall place to work. Hours very so you would have to be flexible. Menues are rewritten, so you can pre ahead . Order of shipments remain the same consistent day of each week
Pros
$5.00 a month gets you a meal per shift
Cons
Some staff members not as friendly and often out spoken

The management sucks, all they care about if you are philipino or Canadian other races treated differently
Health Care Aide (Current Employee) - Sherwood - September 19, 2020
Very inexperienced people to work with , the residents are very friendly but management they don’t know what they are doing . They just wonder around looking for who to blame letting other employees control them
Pros
Friendly residents
Cons
Racism
