Billy Fury Statue Liverpool
Though no longer a household name, Billy Fury was a Liverpool-born pop star that for a while rivalled his more famous contemporaries, the Beatles. There’s a Billy Fury statue celebrating his life in his hometown of Liverpool.
Life
Born Ronald Wycherley in 1940, he never had a number 1 but equalled the Beatles record of having 24 hits in the 1960’s.
Known for his hip-swiveling gyrations on stage, clearly Elvis-inspired, he also appeared in numerous films and TV productions. He died in 1983.
Funded primarily from fans, a bronze statue of Billy Fury was unveiled in 2003 and is now located on the waterfront in front of the Piermaster’s House, behind the Tate Liverpool, and across from the Liverpool Museum. There are several other sculptures on display at the same place.
