Leeds United midfielder Brenden Aaronson has been confirmed as leaving Union Berlin after helping them survive a relegation playoff on the final day of the season.
Before pressing on with transfer discussions either way in the summer under the 49ers, Leeds first face off against Southampton at Wembley this weekend.
Getting back into the top flight would be a huge boost for the club in trying to find a good solution for the players that moved out on loan in the summer of 2023.
Brenden Aaronson confirmed as leaving Union Berlin
Union Berlin stayed up on the final day of the season with a last-gasp 2-1 win against Freiburg, in which Brenden Aaronson assisted the game’s opening goal.
It saw the USMNT midfielder end the season with a mere two goals and two assists in 38 appearances across all competitions, ending his time at the club as they confirmed this on their official site:
“Brenden Aaronson joined 1. FC Union Berlin on loan from relegated Premier League side Leeds United in the last summer transfer window, winning the hearts of Union fans with his dashing style of play, his speed and, not to forget, his decisive goal against TSG 1899 Hoffenheim.
“After 38 appearances, two goals and two assists, his time in Berlin has come to an end and he is returning to England.”

Aaronson faces nervous wait on transfer future at Leeds
Now, the 23-year-old must wait to see what Leeds and Daniel Farke want to do with him in the summer window, likely dictated by the playoff final this Sunday.
The Athletic have shared this update on his future:
“For Aaronson, it was a fitting farewell as he signed off on a high before his likely involvement in the USMNT squad at July’s Paris Olympics.
“The Union website referred to the New Jersey-native as a ‘Wunderkind’ in an article confirming his exit but, despite his potential, there is still uncertainty over where he will play his football next term.
“With Leeds pushing for a return to the Premier League via the play-offs this weekend, it remains to be seen whether he will feature for them in England next season — or be allowed to leave for regular minutes again.”
Aaronson won’t be welcomed back at Leeds in the summer
It might not be the end of the midfielder’s Leeds career if we see him worth having in the squad, but he certainly won’t be welcomed back.
He jumped ship because he thought was better than us and got his move, only to play just as poorly elsewhere, and now Union don’t want him.
Aaronson is going to be either returning to Leeds, or cast off to another club if we go up, but it’s just hard to see who wants him after this second struggle of a season.
