Great Van Halen video. Play many times, saw them in seventies.

Pretty enjoyable documentary but with hardly any involvement from anyone of note. There are a couple of phone bits from some of the band members but that's it, no VH music at all. It's also pretty died and not I. The correct format for today's TVs. Still, fairly enjoyable for the casual VH fan like me.

Good insight to the Van Halen formation and early years although concert is bootleg and there is no Van Halen music in this , but worth a watch none the less.

Obvious after the first five minutes they've haven't got the rights to music or film. Really shoddy that Prime bought this crap

Desperate for the greatness of the Dave Lee Roth era Van Halen on DVD (or video or flip book or just plain anything) you would instantly jump at this one (no pun intended). High hopes fall well short because although there is a constant music track throughout it's certainly no Van Halen but typical MTV2 background music fayre. In fact barely a VH note is ever heard and apart from minor Dave and Eddie Clips with disembodied contributions from Alex and Michael (I think I heard him at one point) with the whole package falling well short on genuine VH material. You already know the stories - just as well because they don't appear. We are in comfortable slippers, pre-watershed territory here - believe me this will appear on cable tv soon and it'll be well before bed time. All pretty vague stories along with repetitive stock footage to embelish will have you crying out for a proper DLR VH release. God please make it soon, we've waited so long and it's not for this. Two stars just because there is nothing else out there at the moment. In the meantime put on the headphones, play the cds and read Daves 'Crazy from the Heat' - you'll get far more mileage doing that. Somebody call me a Doctor........

I am a huge Van Halen fan and especially love the early Dave Lee Roth era. This DVD sounded as if it would be fantastic but it is a major disappointment. Basically the whole package is very shoddy. I was hoping for some revealing interviews and footage of the early gigs at "keg parties", Gazarri's, The Whiskey and so on. Instead I got 70 minutes of still shots mixed with talking head interviews - mostly people with only the vaguest VH connection. The intermittent background music was all VH soundalikes - not the real thing. The snippets of the band themselves playing live probably total 30 seconds across the whole DVD! The video and audio was sometimes well out of synch. Basically the whole thing is a cheap and nasty rip-off - AVOID!

No Van Halen music played; just meaningless gossip from those who may have known them in their early years. I learnt nothing of any real value about them;

VH early years - Young & Wild rock heroes: amazing bend, amazing story
Reviewed in the United States on 20 September 2010
I first thought I had bought another boring 'friends interview DVD' ('Inside...' type...) on this astonishing hard rock band which together with Led Zeppelin is my favourite of all times! But as the video progressed, very interesting pieces of old firends's and crew interviews, comments and rare (short) VH member footage/audio appeared to form a very cohesive (!) portrait of how this amazing rock band began to wow! in the US and then around the world. You only feel sorry that it takes so short to cover this incredible story and that no further material is made available from some anthological gigs we would like to taste, even if in small bites. But early VH is a complete celebration of excellent hard rock (or whatever you call it!), a fantastic achievement these 4 excellent musicians experienced and made us experience, with all their flavors, tastes and multifaced, extreme talents! This DVD gives us an idea of how this all happened. These 'so-called' Pasadena rockers have really made it and we feel as their success was all ours! It is impossible not to enjoy early VH (to be read> VH with DLR, of course, the original VH!) to the guts, impossible not to learn of how dedicated and talented they really were and not to come on board this extraordinary story of the lives/ carrers of the four musicians who formed the best rock band in the US. And this is a contemporary story, it is still happening (the VH Reunion!) and there's much more to come with DLR! So buy the DVD, learn a lot more about these guys, then watch all your official (or not...) early VH show DVDs, and enjoy the ride! You deserve it! We deserve a band like this!

I have been waiting for this DVD for 20 years. I can remember when I just could not wait for the next Van Halen "album" (I almost said CD) to come out. This takes me back to that time. I have always been interested in how Van Halen started and this DVD takes you back to the very beginning and tells all the stories I have always wanted to hear.
I was very entertained by the DVD and couldn't turn it off. I just wish there was more of it. I would love to hear more about the band. Maybe they will make another DVD to pick up where this one leaves off.
